PS3 is hurting!

The benefit of consoles are that they're relatively cheaper than a equivalent gaming computer, more reliable and guaranteed to play games for a 5 year life cycle.

Unfortunately, the PS3 approaches the price of a gaming machine, the Xbox 360 is actually less reliable Microsoft seems to be pushing the console life cycle shorter. I'd just buy a really high end gaming PC except that people don't make many of the best games for them, while most PC games get a console port.

Why not use the money to buy a PC instead?
All of the previous gaming systems have emulators.
ps2, GC, snes....etc
Lets pretend the emulators do not exist for a moment.
Most of the "big money" titles are released on PC. (EA, ID, Raven, Eurocom)
Besides that, you can upgrade your PC any time ya want.
To further your gaming experience, all of the previous console controllers are available plug-and-play USB.
My TV is reserved for viewing movies, not for playing outdated games that my PC spanks any day of the week.
Just my 2 pennies.

Too many games that don't get a PC port... sure would be nice though if every publisher made a PC version of every game, even Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft. I'd just buy a slick-ass PC with an HDMI out video card a blu-ray drive, a tera of harddrive space and bluetooth controllers. Sadly so many games just for consoles... so very few are PC exclusive.

Most of the last generation does not emulate well(hell, there's still some SNES games that can't be emulated at all), most of this generation will not emulate well either; so just getting a PC wouldn't be enough. That, on top of most console games never see PC releases, means that you'd cut down on the potential library by at least half.

Plus, there's a problem that PC game piracy is infinitely easier and more prevalent than console game piracy. So the developers would lose money from more people not having to buy the games, which isn't much incentive to actually create the games for PC's as well; on top of having to deal with everyone having a different PC.

Console gaming definitely has a niche but Romero is right about one thing, if consoles keep getting more and more expensive then it will see a backlash from the consumers. Even now, $600 is a lot of money, especially when it's primary purpose is only to play games. It's much easier to write off a large amount for a computer because you can do much more than game on it. As the prices between PC's and consoles get closer and closer, consoles would begin to lose ground or they'd just become another PC.

Wait, what? PS2, GC? The only GC and PS2 emulators I know of are hellishly slow and have massive problems with nearly every game they can run. lol.

Even PS1 and N64 emulation, while solid, is very frustrating, and Saturn emulation took a VERY, VERY long time to appear... and is also still very buggy. Dreamcast emulation is surprisingly advanced but that's probably because of how well documented its hardware is... still, it's hardly perfect.

PS2 and GC emulation will take a long time before they're worth shit.

He's also playing really old and crappy console games if his PC is "spanking them any day of the week."

Heh, I would love a PS2 emulator to work. They can't even get N64 stuff to work to their max. Ocarina of Time is stuck at 15 fps and slowly getting better.

I dunno bout you but i can run OoT at 60 fps... just gotta know how to configure that shit.

And therein lies the problem, N64 and PS1 emulators are WAY too complicated.

60fps? The original game only ran on 24-30... What the hell does it look like at 60? lol

My comment about spanking was referring to games that are made for PC as well as console.
Yes, I understand alot of games can't be emulated.
The GC and newer consoles havent been successfully "emulated" yet, nor do I claim to run them.
I was just sayin that its just a matter of time before they are emulated.
I also noticed as stated above that games made for PC are getting less, since they are easily pirated.
Still, can you deny the fact that PC has stood strong?
If built properly, the PC is unbeatable for graphics imo.
I run a Snes emulator,as well as n64.
Both run flawlessly.
Ocarina of time, and Super metroid! wewt!

Consoles take another hit... this time from Romero.

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=15725

The PC's out there that can handle the latest games at max settings are at smaller numbers, consoles are already set, so developers can cut loose on creating something that is garunteed to work, and sell more. When everyone has PC's that can handle all the latest games no problem, that will be the end of the console.

Microsoft (The very core of what we call PC) knows if the XboX was based on Windows, then less units would sell.

These multimedia machines Romero speaks about are most likely the evolution of the consoles themselves, already they are PC like.
Connection to the TV or monitor wirelessly is a good idea, for the generation that will have various devices connected to their entertainment set up. If wireless visual connection dosn't provide a clear picture, then no one would want it.

Neither will ever die out. As long as people like PC gaming over console gaming and have the money to spend on top of the line computers then PC gaming will never die. Look at Counter-Strike, old game, cheap game, not very easy to pirate (Steam is almost 100% anti-pirate, can't register a game and play with a generate key.) and doesn't require a very awesome computer to play. Counter-Strike is I think still the most played FPS in the world with a quite staggering number of players. This is just one of many examples such as RTS games (Battle.net has over 700,000players on usually), and MMOs.

Console gaming aims more toward someone who doesn't want to hassle with getting a top of the line computer set up and worrying about all the updates and drivers and what not. But, consoles have gotten significantly more expensive with the new technology and if you want the best experience from your next-gen console, then you need a pretty nice HD 1080p TV.

Exactly.
Most people have standard televisions, and compared to hardcore PC graphics, and LCD/plasma displays.....
There is no comparison...

Top of the line computer, dual core, 2-4gb ram etc... + a 24'' Widescreen or wutvr LCD is gonna cost you around $3500.

PS3 + 46'' 1080P LCD TV is gonna cost you what, around 5 grand? Add a nice sound system a 360 and Wii onto that so you can play everything and your coming in around $7000? Then you have to buy every single game at $60+ since Console games start at higher price then PC games. Extra controllers and accessories and you still can't play the most popular game in the world.

And I ask you, which one is more expensive again?

Not sure what exactly you're saying. No one would have to buy every signle game for any console.

The PC is more expensive. The consoles or the PC can be hooked up to either a monitor or a HDTV. They can also be hooked up to a standard NTSC or PAL TV, although the consoles are better at that, the PS3 in general is ready for all display sets, it's ready to play on whatevers outputing you're PS2 right now. PC can also be hooked up to the sound system same as the consoles. It's all a matter of how much money one would spend individually. Not everyone would spend so much for an HDTV and a sound system. But if they do, good for them, might aswell hook up the PC to it if it's really the best.

And the best games in the world are on Consoles.

Actually you can get a 57 inch 1080P for $1500.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889253084

But it's a bit unfair to compare the price of a console and a 40+ inch high def TV against a PC and a 24 inch monitor. For example my TV was $480, and it's 1080i/720P, which is better resolution than you'll get off of a PC monitor, and it's 32 inches unlike the 24 inches. Also consider with the TV and PS3 you're getting all the gaming + you're getting high def TV and blu-ray movies.

By the way, let's see what we can do with that 3500?

PS3: $600
Xbox 360: $400
Xbox live for 4 years; $200
Nintendo Wii: $250
1080p 57 inch high def TV: $1500
Resistance, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Motorstorm, Super Paper Mario: $290
preorder: Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid, FF13, Super Smash Bros Melee : $230
Buy 300 on blu-ray when it comes out: $30(probably around that).

I said most popular game. "Best Game" is an opinion.

The games with the largest communities are PC games.

World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike, Diablo, Starcraft, Elder Scrolls, Quake, Unreal Tournament.

But now you want to say "Best" games as well. So let's take a look at Metacritic's top rates games for each platform.

So basically what do the consoles have?

Playstation banks on Gran Turismo, God of War, the 2K line of sports games, amateur sports games, some fighting games, and resistance.

XBox banks on Forza, the 2K line of sports games, some fighting games and gears of war.

PC has Half Life, Half Life 2 (and all their mods like Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat), World of Warcraft (and every other MMO except FFXI), Diablo series, Starcraft series, Warcraft series (and every other Real Time Strategy game), Quake series, Unreal Tournament series... yea.

As for the money debate... about 5% of people buy their TV's from NewEgg, and its only americans that can. Most people, and adults will shop around at places like Best Buy, Future Shop, etc... so if your gonna quote prices make sure its from a retailer not a wholesaler.
