PS3 = owned

First, Cell Processor is more then just powerful, it help found a cure and fight cancer. Many Hospital had replace their life saving techology equipment using Cell Processor Techology. There is a reason why they call that Processor almost like a supercomputer, it can do so many calculation in short amount of time. And that faggot who smacked that PS3 could be 1 step closer to find a cure and fight cancer.

Thats fine and dandy, but no ones using a PS3 to perform complex mathematical and scientific equations and experiments. "You should be proud to own this because it uses technology for things you won't be using it to do" is pretty awful logic to justify owning something. Not to mention, while the Cell Processors are powerul enough to aid the field of medicine like that, the PS3 isn't designed for that usage. It's built for blu-ray movies, video games, wireless communication with the PSP, and browsing the internet. No life saving applications there.

You know, I watch you post a lot of crap Vandoura, but did you read any of that? The fucking chip is what is being used in the supercomputer, not the goddamn PS3.

As far as this guy goes, I am no Sony fanboy. I didn't even own a PS2 until about 2 weeks ago. I could care less about the PS3. I can see the overall big picture, and I can see why some see this as really funny. It's just not though, I mean, I watched that whole video and just said to myself, "What a waste of 600 bucks." I realize that came from donations, but coming from a man who carefully plans every purchase he makes, because I live on my own and pay for everything I own, I see that as just another waste of money. Entertainment comes in few, what point is there to destroying some piece of it?

Also, I don't think I've ever laughed harder when I read:

It's not just a game console, it saves lives..

Give me a fucking break Vandoura. Go read a book or something.

check the link...

To participate, users will just download a program into the PS3's hard drive. Then they just need to leave the machine on when they're not playing. The Folding@home team will divide their complex calculations into manageable chunks and then send it to the participating machines. The program and data will take up 10 to 20 megabytes - or about the size of a handful of MP3 files, Pande said.

The PS3's chip is the same one IBM is using in a supercomputer it's building for the Department of Energy.

Speed may not be the same but possbily the same

I never said it wasn't wonderful technology, I'm happy about the advancement in technology that can be used to help the human race. I said its just a console.

No, thats not the PS3. Thats the internet, and volunteers willing to let their machines storage and processors share the burden of the experiments. No where is "Playstation 3" a part of that, other than the box holding the components together. It's the same as SETI@Home.

Not to mention, you keep applauding Sony for the cell processors IBM and Toshiba helped developed, and I can guaranteed you those two put a lot more effort in to it than Sony. Sony doesn't make processors, IBM and Toshiba do. As well, the actual processors in hospitals are a lot more complex and powerful than the low-end models in the PS3.

i agree with elemmire. that's just moronic.
and what's with the fanboy crap? if you like ps3 you're a fanboy?
how about if you detest something you're not inclined to have anything at all to do with you're a total idiot?
Let's go with that and call THAT being a fanboy for awhile shall we.

well i'm saying that the parts put in the PS3 system may helps the researcher by sharing some of the cpu usage and storage, instead of being destroy like that one they show on that clip.

Just forget it, *gets back on to FFXI, and don't need to deal with this*

Hokai, I'll make it nice and easy for you. Even a European with bad English could figure it out.

I'm not talking about religion, Christ had nothing to do with scientific matter

have you even read ANYTHING about the cell processor? -_- even not 100% running it is INCREDIBLY powerful. What was it? 20% and it runs like 2 trillion calculations per 6 seconds or something like that? Incredibly powerful. It is better than the 360 as it can do more at once than the 360, even if the graphics would be the same, it can still do more.

The "cell" is great, if you're a sony fan and like them restricting your useability of their products or others. Chip making is cool but it happens far to often for it to be "impressive", take the AMD 64's for example or anytime a new computer core chip is made. The fact remains that PS3 is just the same old game console that has been around for years, evolved. The main function of the "Cell" is to make better time in processing, for a cheaper means, HD and Blu-ray data between things. Everytime a console is released, they take a new step in processors used. This time, it's a big step but it's still the same ol' thing. You sit down, hold your controller, wiggle your thumbs a bit, and press buttons. The only thing to note here is the chip was invented for a console instead of the computer FIRST. NOT IMPRESSED, maybe next time Sony.

If you're really that impressed I suggest you take some more time to learn about it:

http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html

Skaw hit the nail on the head earlier but I still had to get this off my chest. In the PS3, this technology is useless for anything it's better suited for besides HD and Blu-ray.

Just an FYI, I prefer Playstation to Xbox (even the new one) and Past Nintendo efforts. No fanboi here.

Re:

I think you guys mistake Vandoura’s referential intention. She obviously does not believe a patented Sony PS3, in itself, has any functional purpose in the search to cure Cancer. To point that out, just points out your own misunderstandings of the discussions direction. She’s talking about the Chips that PS3 runs off of, and it’s other capabilities in other machines.

You’re trying to put Vandoura down Mistra, but you’re really just making an ass out of yourself.

If you buy a PS3, you do in fact support the technology it runs on. Sony designs its own games and their platforms, but does not make the chips powering it alone. Sony jointly developed the “Cell Chip” with IBM and Toshiba, who anticipate using the new technology in other systems. Buying products that use this new chip funds the developing team that designed it.

I myself had no intention of buying a PS3, and I sure wouldn’t buy an expensive Game console just because I was a fan of Sony or something. I wouldn’t say it’s garbage either though. I see a lot of hype about having it right on its release, and that I don’t really get but… I guess some people see value in having it first.

http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

Folding @home can run off any computer that runs windows, osx, or linux. And people like to "hack" everything from cell phones, to nintendo ds's to try and get a linux installation running in them, so those could run folding @home as well.

for example: http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Main_Page
The original xbox can be setup to run linux (and by extention, folding @home), not sure if the 360 can yet, but it should be able to run linux in the near future.

I wouldn't be suprised if linux was up and running on the nintendo wii in the near future too. Not to mention, anyone posting on this website has a 99.99% odd of having a computer capable of running folding @home, possibly several computers, I don't see why having a ps3 do it is such a big deal. Infact normal computers are able to run folding @home using spare cpu cycles (aka: not slowing anything down while running 24/7), unlike the ps3 version which wouldn't run while you're playing a game.

I kinda beat you to that Dave, but just not as detailed. :(

When I said "The same as SETI@Home" I meant it could be run on multiple platforms.

Yeah I know =P but alot of people might not of known the details of these projects and how "easy" it is to get it running on anything with a cpu.

I don't feel like reading through this whole thread, but I will respond to this.

The entire 7-element Cell processor in PS3 peaks at 210 GFLOPS.

What that really means is if all seven elements are used at 100% capacity that's how many floating point operations it can do per second.

Realistically, most games will probably use around 80-100 GFLOPs due to programming difficulties and inherent inefficiencies in the system.

So no, it isn't the God machine. Thanks.

PS3 is actually a very good system, I like it so far. 1080p looks incredible.
But be prepared to spend the big bucks on HDTVs and Wires if you want to get the most out of the system...

It has a web browser and all, I got in here using it. lol

Shhh...don't praise the PS3, poor people might hear you.

My only complaint about this smashing consoles is that the videos are almost always lame. Really, he slammed it on the ground and another dude hit it with a sledge hammer until he was tired and all they had to show for the effort was a dented in portion, wow (I watched this video a couple of days ago so my memory might be off). The smash my Playstation (one) video, that I believe started this trend wasn't half bad. Two dudes played basketball with the system, but just hitting the thing with a hammer is pretty lackluster. They could atleast rig it fireworks or something to make it worth the while.

What I find funny about this is people give this guy money, he buys an extra system for himself with their money to sell and pockets the left over change, yet the people who donate think they've accomplished something.
