I know enough to know that you have very little taste for facts that fall outside of your preconceived worldview.
Yes, obviously prejudiced is a better word to describe your feeling for the police. But guess what, that wasn't the way I chose to parse that sentence! I chose to say "You're the fundamental equivalent of a racist" not "You're prejudiced against police officers". My way has more flair. It also has greater impact and relevance when taken with the rest of what I wrote.
To say "most cops are assholes" and then "but I'm not prejudiced against cops" is so patently ridiculous I don't even know where to begin to reply. To take feelings generated by limited personal experience and apply them to an entire group is pretty much the definition of prejudice.
However.
To be prejudiced is to be human. We've all got at least some shred of prejudice in us somewhere, but the trick is recognizing it for what it is. Then again, that requires objectivity and self-analysis, which don't seem to be strong points for most folks.
When you let that prejudice influence the way you think, then you become the (hey, here's that phrase again) fundamental equivalent of a racist.
As for power... Power Corrupts. Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. And the powerless like to make up conspiracy theories. We can all accept those as reasonably accurate statements. To say that MOST people will be corrupted by power is, however, not necessarily accurate, particularly when that power is heavily circumscribed. Police officers have a moderate amount of power in a small scale. They can arrest you, they can restrain you, they can search you if necessary. But if they can't come up with a good reason to have done so, they can lose their jobs. They can themselves get arrested and go to jail. We're not talking about despotic rulers here, we're talking about law enforcement officers in a civilized and overly litigious society.
You can say that most cops are assholes, I can say that through a variety of encounters, from positive (volunteer work) to negative (being questioned as a suspect) that I've never been treated poorly by a police officer. NEVER. So obviously your assessment is grotesquely flawed. If MOST cops were assholes, at least one of the ones that I've dealt with would have fallen into that category.
