Starting tomorrow all PS3s will be $299, 299 Euros, 29980 Yen (£249 I assume, they never really said) and PS3 Slim will be released 1st September at the same price.

All announced at GamesCom.

Is it September 1 everywhere? From what I was able to find out it was saying it'd be out by september internationally but it'd be different dates in different places. Wouldn't mind if the US gets it before lol, the time has come for me to get a ps3, was waiting for this price drop.

It looks sexy.

Don't want to fork out another $299 for something I already have though :P

Is it also 34% less heat generated? Because I'm planning on replacing the heat pump in my house with my PS3.

If it consumes less power it should probably produce less heat I assume.

Edit: Also, kickass avatar. I'm a fan of the Green Lantern, particularly Hal Jordan (Shocking no? =P).

Looks great. Any word on whether or not it can play PS2 or PS1 games? I'll probably just keep my old ps3 anyway.

PS1 games, yes. PS2 games, probably not seeing as the PS2 is still going rather strong. They'll probably bring it back next year. Who Knows.

I think it looks tacky to be honest...I like how the 3 looks...and this looks kinda crap compared...I know it's the slim version but even the PS2 slim looked pretty decent while the chunky one still rocked...

This is aimed at people who want a new PS3 though not existing customers I guess...

I still don't understand why Sony refuses to budge on the backwards compatibility issue. It should be the biggest no-brainer out there. People with PS2 libraries would like to play them on the new machines. I'd certainly prefer the slim over the behemoth currently sitting by my television, but not if I can't pop in Shadow of the Colossus.

Preordered one. The phat will go into the bedroom and the Slim will take over the livingroom. The timing is pretty good since my old 1999 dvd player is start to break down in the bedroom.

Prices have been updated in my store's systems this morning, new 160GB's are now 399.99 as well.

A PS3 for 299.99? It's over, Microsoft and their 54% failure rate are finished!

Nah I doubt it. The Elite is going to drop to $299 and the Pro is going away. Live is a powerful tool. Also many folks who already have a substantial game investment in the 360 will continue to replace it. The Live service is better, on the whole, but is it $50 a year better is the question consumers will have to answer. I think it still comes down to exclusives. At best multiplatform 3rd party titles are graphically even and sometimes a little better on 360. I buy all my 3rd party multiplatform titles on PS3 because of the failure rate of the 360. All in all I think it is still going to be a tough fought race for the rest of this generation.

Oh I know, I'm just being a smartass.

So now I'm gonna be picking one up for sure probably in October, any exclusives that are must own? I got Disgaea 3 and Valkyrie Chronicles on my list, was looking for a third one. Already saw MGS4: The Movie, and Little Big Planet never really got my attention. Infamous looks good, but I feel I'll rush through it too quick.

Maybe I'll just save up and buy the DLC for Disgaea instead.

Pick up Uncharted. You won't regret it =D

By the way, amazon.co.uk is predicting shortages due to supply/demand, so they've imposed the Wii's 5 consoles per household limit.

Yeah my gamestop told me they aren't gonna be sending a lot of them in right now because they want to get rid of all the fat ones.

Of course that couldve just been him trying to talk me into pre-ordering it, but I still don't expect any place to have big stocks of the slims right now.

Just be sure to check out the Pixeljunk Monsters demo on the PSN Pupusa... and check out Warhawk and the Resistance games.

I think MGS4 is worth playing even if you've seen the cutscenes. The gameplay is really open and fun.

You have to remember the PS2 is still selling like hotcakes, so when the time does come to discontinue support for the PS2, That is when BC will return.
The PS2 is still selling like hot cakes, because in part there's no backwards compatibility on the PS3's. If my PS2 breaks, and I still want to play those games, I have to go buy another PS2; I can't just "upgrade" to a PS3 and get both.
