PSN Releases

I never read too many details about Home, but i get the gist of it. I'm wondering if it'll have real estate, and at what cost is it to beef up you're digital living space ?

According to that, nothing will be added on PSN until mid-april? I'm hoping it's not accurate, because if it is, it's beyond horrible.

oh no, there'll be new things, this was just the release for April -> July supposedly there's still stuff coming out now.

Even still, the list is incredibly disappointing. Two release dates for april, one at the end of may, one at the end of june, one at the end of july. I'd hope for something significantly more frequent than just once a month.

I do agree there :|

I know that :P but it'd be nice to see more come out on the PSN store. I still wonder why EVERY PS1 game hasn't at least been put on the PSN store yet. At least, ever popular one.

There aren't ever a huge flood of stuff that come onto the PSN but it has an amazing percentage of really incredible releases.

There are numerous PSN releases I've gotten more hours out of than a full retail game, most important Gripshift, which is available on Xbox 360 now too.

Licensing.

They'd have to go through every developer and publisher that released a game on the Playstation, discuss pricing, draw up contracts for each title, and put it through.

Needless to say, I doubt they have many people working on trying to solidify deals to put such an extensive library up in your wanted less than a year and a half timeframe.

It's the same reason Nintendo doesn't release the tide gates on the Virtual Console for the Wii, even on the NES/SNES/N64 titles.

well that just plain sucks :| it'd make them more money if they sold em for 5 bucks XD

Not necessarily. It's going to cost them money to convert the games over to being downloadable and playable via PSN. That and the cost of maintaining the servers would make most of them a waste of time/money to get the license.

Now that I finally have access to the store (thank you, new credit card), I'd like to see more PS1 titles available. The first thing I did was download Spyro the Dragon and Wild Arms and now I'm hungry for more.

The Japanese got Metal Gear Solid, which I'm hoping will migrate to the North American store.

I should probably research my firmware options.

I honestly doubt that will cost too much money tbh. A lot of people easily convert the PS1 games to eboot for the PSP already (only have to haxorz the firmware to deal with the security problem which Sony could easily fix up fine themselves) and they do it within maybe 5 minutes and no cost XD so ya, I highly doubt it would cost them THAT much more money (just to do it). Now, the licensing thing might be the problem since I guess they'd have to go back to each publisher to get permission to put the games on the PSN store and work out deals. That would prolly be the only real time/money consuming point. :| but even then, I bet they would still have a profit (and not to mention it would prolly encourage more people to buy the PSP or PS3 so even more profit.. since they are complementary :D)

PS3's don't run the same platform as PC's, so they'd need to port every game themselves rather than just amass the images already out there. Then they'd have to get them to work correctly with the PS3's hardware(cell is a bitch, remember), especially since no emulator has 100% compatibility. They'd also have to either add new servers or just expand their current ones to handle the additional loads; then maintain them. That's just the technical side.

Before they could even do that, they'd have to figure out what titles to release. That'd take some time and money, they couldn't just look at old sales figures and guess; they need to know what people'd be willing to pay to play now. Then, they'd have to go to the companies and negotiate a new license for their game. That'd take time and lawyers aren't cheap.

Unless they're sure the game is going to sell well, it's no where near the cost in time, money and effort to add every PS1 title to the PSN. The major cost is going to be the licensing, the company's going to want some money, so Sony will have even less money to pay for all of the work they've done. That's why the majority of the releases on the Virtual Console are Nintendo properties, because they don't have to license games they already own. Nintendo is likely losing money on all of their older games, just because they can actually make more money on the more recent, popular games. So, you really have no idea what you're talking about.

You do realize they don't need to port PS1 games to run on the PS3? The PS3 can run PS1 games...
The PS3(some models at least) can play PS1 games, but not PS2 games? If that's actually true, that's an unbelievably stupid decision on their part.

I was talking about purely porting for the PSP :P which I imagine they could do via a PC (since they do that to make the eboot to work with the PSP, the hackers that is, and do it easily) and then upload it onto their server to download after paying for it. As I said, the licensing would be the only bitch and I can pretty much easily determine which games to put on the PSN store. FF7-9, Soul Reaver, Gran Turismo, any other game that sold well lol I'm betting the original publishers would prolly work with sony (cause most of em do, and I think Gran Turismo or whatever is a Sony game.. though I'm lazy with remembering shit about racing games). I still don't think it costs as much as you are assuming, but I doubt I'm right too XD

And yes, the newer PS3s that don't have great backwards compatibility play PS1 but not all PS2 (and some won't play any PS2). It is dumb :|

Hmm, I need to try and boot a PS1 game on my PS3... I know it can't play PS2 games, so I didn't even bother with PS1 games.

Don't think I have any PS1 games left, though. If it can boot PS1 games, but not PS2 games, that is indeed a moronic decision.

Oh my god he's right. That has to be the dumbest decision of this console generation.
