Challenge mode and PVP (they're two different things) were introduced in PSO v.2 for Dreamcast, which also marked the first time the series became pay to play. Since then, every PSO has had the gametypes, except just like with PSU, Sega has always patched new things into the game. The whole waiting a bit before unlocking new content has been the same since PSO v.1 came out in 2001. This game is all about finding a group of people to level with, or soloing to get the cash/items (at least until higher levels). It's not very easy to obtain good loot and money when you're in a team of 6. You're better off passwording a server and soloing if you're desperate for money.
The game is nothing like WoW, FFXI (except maybe crafting in a way), EQ2, or any of these other mmo's out there. It's a combo-based fighter mmo sort of. Kind of like KH...kind of.
