I'd be in favor of this, as it seems people are using it as a way to try to respond to threads without making it 'public'. Some of the harshest comments are in here, and I think people would be a lot more constructive in their criticisms were they up for the public to view at anytime.

Other reasons for it...you want to see how someone has gotten such a high reputation, clicking on it would route you to the thread(s) they partake in.

I would find this interesting too, would be a good laugh to see how mean people can be in their rate downs.

I also agree and wish that this could have been viewable a long time ago, just give advance warning as some people who do not respond to threads of casual nature leave personal comments not to be seen by others but the person they're giving it to, that way those comments possibly rl info can't be seen.

Other than that I don't see why not, doing so would make the rep function just like the thanks button(dead horse i'm beating but a point is there) and the reason for it's removal was that it streamlined threads. But you're going to agree who you're going to agree with regardless.

I like this idea also.

So far I can say there's been light discussion concerning ratings. Some issues have come up with users purposely rating as much as possible just so they could rate down certain others as much as they can. Harassment is definitely frowned upon. Personally speaking, I think it'd be a great idea if the report function could be applied to rate downs.

If I'm not mistaken there was a big fuss about making reputation comments public. I know I complained because in the past I've written things to friends in them in lieu of PMs that I don't really want people reading. I think they should be reportable or somehow moderated if necessary, but don't think they should be public unless it's kind of a "from this point forward" thing with advance notice.

I would consider doing this if it would only be after an announcement was made 2 weeks before turning it on where we would then go in and turn it on to show from the date of announcement forward.

I don't even know how much can be displayed with reputation like that but I will look this evening or tomorrow morning (work tonight then party!).

If you're going to Implement it, let people choose whether or not they want their profile to show or not? Or you could make it so that Friends can only view it? If it's mainly being implement so people can see where people are getting rep ups from, thats none of some peoples business.

This is what I was thinking.
Friends is a good idea too. Don't think it should be implemented for that reason, I was thinking about this a few days back though and thought it was a good idea.

What Aud said. A report function for the rep. system would iron out the harassment.

i disagree highly with this. if the reputation comments are made to be viewed publicly, let's not stop there and go ahead and make private message boxes viewable as well.

i don't particularly care to see anyone else's reputation comments, why should anyone else even care to see mine?

I feel this could open up a new form of public ridicule, its quite easy to post rate down comments designed to annoy or frustrate others in a style that may seem quite innocuous. Let the rate ups/down remain only viewable by the intended recipient please, there's no need to air our dirty laundry.

One of the few times I'll make a post from work.

The problem with the current system is how people abuse it.
The question is whether it is an abuse we have to ignore to maintain the current integrity of it's functionality -- or change it's purpose to reduce the abuses.

That is partly why it would be a "from this date forward" deal. I have made comments that I don't want public because they are personal details or what not... as I am very sure others have (I have seen them.)

It goes back to the quintessential situation where a good system must be destroyed/replaced or changed because a select few use it to stalk/abuse other users. While I can say I have not stalked anyone with the rate-down/up feature -- I have left very harsh feedback every now and again.

So... where does that leave us? Do we want new functionality out of the reputation system that fights abuse of the system -- or remain with the current private/personal system.

I'm fine with a report function. That should be more than sufficient to, at least, slow down abuse of a reputation system. I can think of one instance (re: jyakotsu vs. Zerayla) off-hand where it would have come in exceptionally handy.

Making it publicly viewable though is like making the private message inboxes viewable. I *still* type things in rep window that I don't want anyone else to see. If I agree strongly with something Stine says, rep her up for it, and I *just happen to* tack on a "I can't wait til you get home *rrrrwwwoooorrrrrr*", I sure as hell don't want that to be seen by the larger part of the community.

Likewise, I don't think making it viewable by friends is necessarily good either. I might have two separate friends who aren't friends themselves, and if one reps me up for disagreeing with another (as friends are allowed to disagree, contrary to popular belief), and the other potentially reads and misconstrues the meaning of the rep-up, it could cause a vast amount of discomfort for all three parties involved, and in a worst-case scenario, could mean the breakdown of friendships in the process.

This.

We already had this discussion, no thanks.

Excuse me, but I could be wrong... Myself and a few other people suggested this long ago, and many people (again I might be wrong about this part) including Jamal, showed great disinterest in the idea.

What?

What I mean to ask is whats with the sudden interest in the display of rating comments?

the answer is fairly obvious with the last recent big flame I think.

If i had to guess I'd find it highly likely because of one person's rep down on Jamal. Jamal wanted this person to respond to the said flame but this did not happen.

I suppose another side effect of making it viewable would be(here goes another analogy to it) would give the impression that the more rep ups you get the more right you are, which isn't necessarily true or in short streamlining.

Still I have nothing to hide and it just depends on how the QCDN populus feels about it, a poll should be attached to this thread or another imho.

This isn't the same as PM's. If you want to send a PRIVATE Message, send a PM. You don't have to send anyone else a PM before you send them another PM.

I would love to see certain people's reputation comments to see what they've been saying that's so clever that people jump all over it.

This keeps people from being two-faced in a thread...becaue you're still responsible for what you're saying. In a publicly viewed thread, why should you be able to say something that the public isn't able to see...it's a weak cop-out.

Ruffy, I honestly didn't remember this coming up before, and I've mentioned it to Miros. If I did post against it before, I realize now why you were right for the above reasons.

Yes and no. This isn't the first time it's happened, but this is one example.

Not to sound like an ass, but it seems that you have already taken the liberty to add it in your signature (as many others including myself have done). Doing it in a form of public humiliation or boosting your own self ego type of way. In just though, I could see much of this as flame baiting or actions from others to take it the wrong way. People will always hate you or love you and if they feel like rating you down or up is up to them.

Making anything public isn't going to stop it from happening. Now I see where harassment and other such methods should be monitored or justified, we all have someone who hates us and they find it demeaning and troll/stalker like to do anything to keep you in the pits.

It's not a form of public humiliation, it's added lines in a signature that need not be there. Were it public you nor me would have the need to do this.
