Feedback Public displayal of Rating function

I would love to see certain people's reputation comments to see what they've been saying that's so clever that people jump all over it.

The first time this issue came up was because of abuse of the reputation system (i.e. Jyak and Zerayla). But it seem what I've quoted is the root cause of your issue. I don't understand why you or anyone else needs to see someone else's reputation remarks. What does it accomplish? Why is the QCDN rep system so important that you even have a desire to see someone else's reputation comments?

It's a two-fold issue. It sparks my interest to know where the good posts are on this board...so having the ability to check someone's rep and go to their rated posts navigationally helps you find the meat faster.

The jyak and zerayla issue also works. Being able to view the comments left will help keep people in check. I'm pretty much alone in the thought that I wouldn't type something that I didn't want everyone to see.

To clarify, you'd be happy if there was a way that you could see what posts people were rated on but not who gave them the rep or the commentary associated?

And I haven't heard anything further regarding abuse of the rep system like Jyak's, so that may be a non-issue at this point.

It's not a form of public humiliation, it's added lines in a signature that need not be there. Were it public you nor me would have the need to do this.

I see what you mean by that.

What if it was done in more "discrete" method: Example

"This player is currently disliked by that player" or
"This player is currently liked by that player"

Also leaving the option to report posts from said stalkers?

idk... just seems more forum friendly that way

I think it'd be a great idea if the report function could be applied to rate downs.

I agree with this. If there are some people using rate downs as a way to harrass, then that would be a good option to have. I'm sure a PM works just fine, but a report button would be a bit more focused for the task.

As for being able to look at other people's reps, I don't care. I don't see the point in taking that kind of interest in it, at all, but if that's how the fat lady sings around here, so be it.

I think this is a good idea as well. Some people, (more than just the more notorious and well known bitter raters) use this as retaliation to personal feelings. Imo if you're not rating me down with something that has to do with the post I've made, you have no place rating me down. I think if this was made viewable people would be more selective in their random rate downs. (and probably even in their rate ups). Reporting them might help, but then the mods are going to get slammed with reports because people don't like rate downs etc. And although it's a good way to let our feelings known about posts, sadly some do abuse it.

Considering that you harp on people reading the entire thread or posts before replying, I don't see why having links thrown at you based on people's reputation assists you any faster in finding good or bad posts.

You've never been one to be lazy before...

Personally, I applaud Zerayla for her ability to keep that whole thing on the down-low for as long as she did. I agree that everyone reaches a breaking point and it seems she did reach hers when that whole shitstorm came up, and it was really only fitting that she bring it up. Having that be public information is entirely unfitting in such an event.

QCDN isn't a small town; we need not know everyone's business 24/7.

I'm more for ditching the entire goddamn reputation system in lieu of publicizing it.

I'd gladly see the rep system gone if its going to transform into some open peep show.

This was discussed previously and a poll was taken... the majority said no they did not want reputation comments public. Sorry if you missed out on the poll and the discussion, but bottom line is, it was shot down.

Frankly, I don't see why this is being rehashed again.

Miros told me I could post it, I'm just checking interest. The reason it's being rehashed is there are many instances where it's been abused. I'm sorry I missed it too, and I asked a question if it was possible to bring up again. Miros told me to start a new thread. Had he said no, so be it.

You could make a new thread if you'd like. The masses wanted them to not be seen by the public because some of them use it as a quick PM feature. I would be up for another discussion.

Who cares about looking at other peoples reputation. Are people honestly interested in seeing everybodies friend circle jerk rate ups? If you are, take a step back and realize it's a pointless system.

But... then the world would explode somewhere... D:

Report feature, yes.

Public viewing, no.

Not only would you be getting red dots for your posts, but would be harassed by others' friends for even using the system should you red dot them.

I'd rather see a myspace rep system where you get more dots for more friends (ridiculous) than to see the public viewing go into effect.

I also have to disagree with making it public. Nobody but the user needs to see these comments, and if they are of an abusive nature, then yes, a reporting system should be implemented. To prevent abuse of said reporting system, simply put, if you report a rated down as abusive and after review by a mod or admin, it is deemed not inappropriate, then you get notified of it. If you abuse the system consistently, then you get infraction points. Lets see people abuse the reporting system then.

And I side with Jeska and Tristam on this, if it is going to be made public, then just scrap the whole rep system instead.

Just my thoughts from this.

Pros:
  • Everyone sees the rate downs and possibly discourages ridiculous rate downs. I understand that it could be frustrating that someone responds with a ratedown instead of the thread that you posted.

Cons:
  • Everyone sees every rateup comments that might not be intended for everyone. Someone might rateup someone in the real life thread for a personal reason and might not want this situation made public.
  • Could turn into more of a mob mentality than it already is. Someone might see someone else rateup/down someone and follow suit since their friend did it.
  • People judging other people's rateup/downs. It's like having permission for liking someone. Some people might not think the person deserves the rateup for what they posted and then rates them down thus causing animosity.

Suggestions (granted I don't know the full software capabilities of the function):
  • Make only ratedowns public. If the system is being used for harassment is that much of an issue, then make only the ratedowns visible so people can see who is just being a jerk to someone.
  • Disable comments in the reputation menu or make it so users can enable/disable display of the comments but still show the red and green dots.
  • Do away with the whole reputation system. This was voted on before here: http://www.qcdn.org/ffxi/showthread.php?t=59985
  • Make ratedowns reportable for harassment.

Personally I don't think it's necessary for everyone to see what everyone rates up or down. I personally see it as an indicator to the individual of what the public likes or dislikes for them to post. It's kind of like tv ratings, you don't see what every individual is watching but you see what people think is popular. The powers that be have access to the ratings but not the public.

Well since we're revisiting this, I'll reiterate what I said the first time. If you want to make a report function for negative rep, have at it. But no, you should not make reputation comments public, and the majority here has made it clear they don't want it that way. Mods already went the step of making it so you can see who has repped you. If you have a problem with something someone's said, PM a mod. Otherwise, what I say to people who I've repped, whether in agreement or disagreement, is nobody's business but the person I'm directing it to. If people are so bent out of shape because someone's bar is bigger than theirs or because they don't get to stick their nose in everyone else's business (like that doesn't happen enough around here as it is), then I agree with Tristam - get rid of it rather than make it some pubic display that's one more thing for certain people to bitch about. And they will bitch about it whether this happens or not.

I'm kind of irritated that this subject was put to us all as "ok, we're going to discuss this for x period of time and take a poll and that's it," and now suddenly we're revisiting it again. And why exactly? It's not like it was up for discussion for 5 minutes and no one got to put in their two cents. If anyone was unclear on how people felt about it, there's a thread they can search to clarify.

I think you're way off base with your accusations Zyn, and frankly, why you feel you must whole-heartedly disagree with any suggestion I make on these boards makes it seem you're not disagreeing with the ideas but the person.

There is blatant abuse going on with the system, making public comments in a private way to try to save face. In a perfect world, the rate-up/down system would work with being private. But when 3 LS-leaders are sending responses to threads via a rate-down rather than responding where everyone can see, there's a problem.

True Jamal, but making them private is only going to open another can of worms for this issue. This matter is resolved simply by implementing a "Report Abuse" button for rate ups or rate downs (cuz if only rate downs are reported, people will rate you up but input negative comments). There is already a strong initiative to NOT make them public. I personally feel like the majority of people have made a decision in this matter.

Not that I disagree with you Jamal, but what you are asking for just simply will not work for this kind of a setting. If neither suggestion works, then as stated before; dismantle the rating system and let by gones be by gones. :)

No ditching on jamal for starting this thread, I was the one who asked him to bring it up. I would be willing to re-open the issue if there was extreme support to have them publicly viewed.

The one thing I love about this community is that they are always thinking. The downside is though, suggestions are made that seem unreasonable at this point. This isn't me trying to be a jerk but at this point the hack I have would show reputation in everybody's profile as if you were viewing their contact info. At this point, there is no possible addition of a report feature, no way to really start it from this point forward. The option right now and question I want answered is "Do you want reputation viewable to everybody on QCDN or no?"
