I shall submit to thee, pr0n, worth more than the lord's geeses' golden eggs.

Really though I think I can toss up a few bucks if needed..

How about a fundraiser? Such as anyone who donates five bucks gets to enter a QCDN tournament at the new ballista thingy. Do that twice or four times a year, whenever you need money to run the site. That could be really fun to do.

exactly why did we upgrade to V Bulletin tho?

The old QCDN was fine wasnt it? Although laggy at times. I appreciate the upgrade tho.
Prior lag and the forum software upgrade are two different things.

Forum lag was caused by qCDN being hosted on a shared server with roughly 200 other accounts, which is the most common low cost hosting option there is. When the server would do the backups, QCDN would slow to a crawl.

The switch to vBulletin was mainly done because it is overall easier to maintain (though I still need to find a better way to add new LS forums), and it has many features that were only available through 3rd party modifications to phpBB.

My view on this is that I spend more time looking at the forums durring a year than I do playing a video game I've paid $50 for, so it would be worth it to me to at least foot the bill for a month's worth of board costs. It would be a $60 worth spending for me. I totally understand if others, especially some of the kiddies couldn't toss any additional cash up, and would in fact want them to leech off me in this case. It is the other people on the board that make it worth comming to, so if I have to pay a little more than "my fair share" to cover them, so be it.

honestly i think if a fee was imposed membership would drop greatly, not only the annoying people that troll the boards for something to feed off of, but also the casual members like me and alot of other people on QCDN who only pop in here once a day or two to see what's going on. Point number 2 - While i do like the site, i'm don't think that it has enough game related value to be charged to use. While i have given advice on a few occasions, i've never really used the boards here to find help with a quest or a mission or something to that effect. Most of what i do see on here is random stuff that i could find on a free site like alla or killing ifrit, or the SE homepage, not to mention the recent string of crappy ass flames.

You should charge LS's for having a private forum. I'm not saying an arm and a leg, but .5 to a buck a month is fair.

And if you need donations, I'll on that

I'll help in any way I can.

So far every idea presented has been a good one, although I must say I kinda lean towards Cubs' support of AdSense.

Maybe ads are the way to go. I just can't stand how people freak at the thought of spending a couple bucks.

Think of KI and Alla being your options. As far as server specific posting goes, this IS the place. God forbid you guys will have to hold off on a Happy Meal for a day to support this place.

i agree with you here. I think ads would be the way to go. also we have a py in are mence? there a gilseller in these fourms? or maybe it like buying a house vboard get a commsion for any site that is sold to rmt so they sold you out^^

Maybe we can finaly get that "adult" section for anyone that donates? ;)

But for the sake of QCDN, I think it would be best to go the ad route since most of the people here refuse to pony up anything to keep this board going.

Why do people keeping posting stuff about how horrible it would be to charge a subscription fee? Sculli already said that wasn't going to happen, so declaring how horrible it would be is kinda a moot point. As far as adds go, anything unobtrusive would be fine, but would it be possible to make it so people who chose to donate wouldn't have to look at adds?

There have been offers to buy QCDN in the past. When Yantis sold out to IGE, IGE started on a buying rampage and bought like 90% of all MMO fan sites.

The reason I was opposed to ads when I made QCDN was that most sites that displayed ads were just plain annoying. Pop-ups, pop-unders, animated gif flashing all the time and stuff like that. I think the reason google does so well with their adsense is that the ads are content relevant and don't stand out all that much while still delivering the message.

I will let this thread run for another week or so to get some more feedback and then see what can be done.

The benefit in displaying AdSense ads is that the revenue could exceed the cost, at which point we can start doing fun stuf with the rest, contests, give-aways, etc.

If you make pay methods convenient, IE: not sending you an envelope full of cash by regular mail, I'd be willing to pay a small fee. Paypal seems like a reputable service.

I"d definately go the Ad route, it's a guaranteed source of income

Quoting this for hilarity.

I would not mind at all giving a little once in a while. This site is great, and if all is needed to keep it adds free is a few donations, I wouldn't mind throwing in a 10$ once in a while

Google AdSense Ads
Easy to implement into the page header, non graphical text ads. Just displaying the ads would lead to revenue, without the need for people to actually click them.
Personally I am opposed to these ads, for many reasons, one of which is that they will be gil seller ads for sure, at which point selling out to gil sellers without Google would yield a higher revenue.

I just want to say that this would not bother me in the least.

Sure, let the gil sellers give you money so we can have a forum to bitch about what they do and how they act.

Poetic Justice is what that be.

I for one have NEVER EVER EVER NEVER EVER clicked on any ad on any web page for any reason. If I wan't to buy something, I'll do a google search for it or go to the store.

If you got the ads where you only get payed if they get clicked on, I'd click on em all the time and close the pop up window immediatly. It wouldn't be difficult.

I'll do anything to keep this site up short of paying for it myself. I'm real real poor.

I did just ad an ad-bar to the nightshift template. Let's see how it goes and get some feedback on whether this sort of placement is acceptable and if it is I will add it to the other styles as well.

Edit:
This is indeed just a test. Some of the ads may not be relevant to anything, it may take up to 24 hours for Google to figure out what this site is all about before relevant ads show up.

I am currently also working on something pretty cool, if I can get it to work right then we will have a neat New Year's Giveaway of sorts.

That is the style I use.

I didn't even notice it until I read this thread.

However, I did just click on a link (in case it's the kind where you have to click to add revenue), and saw this. I lol'd.
