I figured out that one can lock certain domains out, so that they do not show up on the AdSense ads. I really should go to bed now, but I may just go through the displayed ads the next few days and lock the gil sellers out. Though there is something ironic in making them pay for the upkeep. ;)

Best of luck with the ads thingy Sculli, there would be some poetic justice (I think I used that right ^^; ) in making the g/s's pay for qcdn though XD

Poetic justice is a literary device in which virtue is ultimately rewarded or vice punished, often in modern literature by an ironic twist of fate intimately related to the character's own conduct.

One of the most memorable examples is found in Stephen King's "Survivor Type," a doctor with no morals or conscience is shipwrecked on a deserted island. Because of his illicit activities, he has a valise of heroin with him. When he breaks his ankle he uses the heroin for an anesthetic, then cuts off his own foot and eats it. He continues to cut off body parts to fend off starvation, finally cutting off his left hand. The diary he keeps ends there. It is poetic justice that the means and skills he used in a lifetime of harming others become the instrument of such horrendous suffering inflicted upon himself.

This isn't to such extremes in this particular case, but still, it fits.

Mayby you can put a disclaimers under the Ad, something like: The above being advertized does not represent whe opinions of the QCDN comunity. I though of that as I saw an IGE ad.

First three ads I saw were all gil selling websites offering holiday deals. :D Anyway text ads are fine by me. Fox news website has those mixed with the news articles, so I'm use to it.

just go with adds, sure, google will have gil seller adds, but will we actually click on them? will we even LOOK at them? no, we wont, so any adds are fine with me. lets just make sure they're not to flashy, and please, no porno adds...

I have added a poll to the topic.
Google AdSense Ads display gil seller ads, which I good I suppose, cause they are relevant, go Google!

I do have the option to manually remove domain names from ads that are supposed to be shown on QCDN. I could over time remove any gil seller traces from the Google ads that are shown on here.

Most all of the time I am firm on the way QCDN is run, however, the gil seller thing is a touchy subject, and the users are the one's who make this community work, so I am asking for advice on what to do with those ads.

The one thing to consider is that clearly there are gil buyers, on QuetzalCoatl, and on this message board. Leaving the ads as is could lead to a click through and revenue for QCDN. Taking them out would likely result in less relevant ads, lower click throughs, lower revenue.

Does not removing the gil seller ads qualify as "selling out"?
Is the whole thing way less of an issue than I think it is and I should just not worry about it?

I don't think it's really worth the time, I tend to ignore ads anyways, lol.

If the amount of times an ad is clicked on determines the amount that qcdn gets paid lets start a program... Everyone click on 3 random ads a night and close the window they open. It takes 1 min and you are doing your part to keeping QCDN alive. Since most of us dont wanna donate monatarily y not donate a minute of clicking and closing. What rate does the Adsense pay? What would it be worth if say 1500 ads were clicked on a day?

That would only be 500 people clicking on 3 ads a piece. Easily doable. I vote we manipulate the system by intentionally using the links then closing them.

There are a couple issues with that.
Ad manipulation will lead to contract termination, meaning AdSense will drop QCDN, which means no cash, which means no good.

Google knows who clicks what and how often. The advertisers know whether you do anthing else on their page or just click-and-close. Too many click-and-close will cause them to complain to Google, who will in turn run their little analyzer and tell me that I am fucked.

The best course of action is to look at the ads, and click if they do look interesting or useful for real.

Currently only one style shows the ad, I will add the ad to the other styles over the next few days, and then it will take a few more days for actual relevant ads to show up.

I have also contacted a couple of companies to see whether they would be interested in direct advertising. However, I have also learned that forums are generally regarded as second rate publishers, because the audience never changes much.

Let's just wait a few weeks and see how the whole thing works out. But whatever you do, please don't inflate the click-through-rate by artifically clicking on every ad there is.

The rate at which AdSense pays is not published, the reason for that is that some advertisers pay more than others per click, and Google doesn't really want publishers to know who pays what so that the publishers do not play the system.

Even though the poll is so far in favor of keeping gil seller ads in, and they would definitely bring in cash if clicked, I decided to go ahead and block those ads.

As I was updating the new message headers (the stuff you see if you are not registered yet, try to log out and see what I mean), I realized that new QCDN users would see gil seller ads first when coming to this site.

This is unacceptable to me. I do not want to give the impression that QCDN is associated with gil sellers to potential users.

It will take me a bit to add all the gil seller domains to the filter that locks them out, but it will be done.

Can we have certain posters permabanned if we donate a certain threshold?

I'm serious.

You should move quickly but get the Amazon referrals going now, people are buying holiday gifts right this minute and even those who have no intent of giving you money probably wouldn't mind taking a qcdn referral link to purchase useless shit for their friends and family...

Charge for sigs too... I'm sure some lamer will easily pay $500 if he could post his 20 line sig to show off his monster power usb cables. Okay not serious about this...

edit: These are some funny ass textads popping up... SAP consultants... wtf... there's probably .00003% people here who knows what that even means.

I put an Amazon link up.
I did have to chuckle at the charging for large sigs, lol.
Perma-bans are not for sale, as enticing as the idea is.

The Google ads will take a few days to settle down, I am also activly banning the gil seller ads, those will take a couple days to disappear as well.

Re: SAP
I if you are young, technically inclined, and don't have the money for college, go work for SAP.
Next to Siemens SAP is one of the best career paths you can take without a college degree. You will start at extremely low pay, but they will train you well and educate you as you move up. Friend of mine did that, he's been working there ever since (12 years now), and he moved up considerably, both in terms of salary and responsibility.

Aye, Materials Management modules represent :p

You should make a new sticky stating the amazon link so people understand and be an obvious reminder. Quite a few people don't even think about it.
