The other day i had to Restore my PC to its factory setting, due to a Problem i had with s System Restore Disc. And due to that I have to completely reinstall FFXI and all the exspansions as well as everything else on my PC.

My question is will FFXI run efficently if it not Installed on the "C" or Main Hard Drive. Because an IT Friend of mine told me that alot of games dont run effiecently on a Secondary Hard Drive, which made me curious.

Has anyone tried this before? And if so did it work well?

PS. The Secondary Drive i want to install FFXI to is SATA if that effects anything.

Oh actually, I used my secondary HD to play FFXI on my laptop and it never did run 100%. Maybe this was why.

Not certain tho Claud.

P.S. I love you.

that doesnt give me much hope. But thanks though.

P.S. You complete me

Considering the amount of reads and writes you'd be doing to that poor drive, coupled with the large amount of game data there is to read and write, it's not a good idea.

Well my Home pc is now tottally fubared....

It will be a while be for i get back on FFXI.

I think my processor is failing after 2 friggin months...... NEVER agian will i waste 1 grand on a HP computer.

Yes, installing games on a non system HDD will make your games run more efficient. Like Green pointed out, if you're running your game and OS on the same disc the head has to switch back and forth between system and game reads. A lot of people setup their systems with OS on 1 drive and games, files, pics etc on 2nd. The system drive goes through a lot of fragmentation. Putting a game on a 2nd HDD avoids that. To be safe backup the registry data of the game to avoid reinstall when dealing with OS problems.

The best way to setup a PC is to have system files and programs only on C:\

Store personal and media data on another separate drive. Eventually the system will crash, accidents, viruses attack, and operator error happens. All your data will be safer elsewhere.

Oh and I wouldn't recommend HP unless it's a business notebook.

Hope that answers your questions~

I said the opposite, Omni :O

I said that having game data on a separate hard drive would be less beneficial to either drive because of the constant read/writes on the drive, and the time it takes for data to go from drive B through SATA, to the memory then to mingle with the processed data from drive A (program data), you'd have performance problems.

It works for music and videos, but I highly doubt it would be a good thing to install a game on a separate drive, especially since its registry data is going to be on the system partition anyway (i.e. it wouldn't show as installed on a system where it wasn't in the Windows registry)

I have 3 HD's and I have had video problems because I installed FFXI on the 3rd HD. Its nothing significant but when I go to log in and click ok it is choppy and not smooth at all like it used to be before my HD went tits up.

This gets to be even more of an issues if you use a USB drive as a secondary, as opposed to a SATA or even an ATA drive.

It depends on the software. I don't know specifically for FFXI, but in general you are fine with installing software on any drive. It all depends on how shoddy the programmers were. If they hardcode some directory into the game, and it doesn't exist because you installed it somewhere else, then you will have problems due to them not coding the software correctly.

I do it and it works fine.

Your friend is wrong, installing programs on secondary drives is a common practice to improve performance of read/write to a solid disk in a system. The -only- thing that would be considered a downfall is the registry pointers are stored on the system drive, but this hasn't been an issue directing software instructions to a non system drive since the days of NT4.

Even installing XI to a USB disk is perfectly fine. The bandwidth cap and throughput supported on USB2 is well over the maximum of what any typical single user application requires.

Thanks you all for your informative answers to my question ^^ It is greatly appriciated.

And over the weekend i found out that My Processor in my PC failed. Which failed during the system restore Causeing the fubar of the whole PC.

So once my PC gets back from the HP Repair shop (in about 2 Weeks) I'll Definatly try loading FFXI on the 2nd HD. But until then i'll just have to deal with the Xbox Controls
