Or more specifically, the proposers.

How did you go about asking? Did you set up something elaborate, like a carriage ride through Central Park on a moon lit evening (example)? Or something more simple, like your/their home?

The reason I ask is that I have been seeing my girlfriend for a couple of years now, and the question has popped up from friends, family, as well as her. I do want to marry her, I just don't know how to go about doing it. My initial plan was to do it over in Paris, but that plan kind of fell through, so that's out. I guess I just want to now how other people have done it, and maybe take suggestions from you all on what to do.

Any help/suggestions/thoughts would be greatly appriciated.

Tristam took me to downtown Charleston, SC and we had a nice dinner. Then we walked down by the ocean where I was constantly worried that someone was going to mug us. Note: it was nighttime and I heard about a couple getting mugged there twice the week before. Then when we got to where he was going to propose to me I said something along the lines of, "This is where my sister's ex-fiance proposed to her." Then he looked at me a little embarrassed and replied, "Well I wouldn't have taken you here if I would have known that," and proceeded to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him. It was very romantic despite me. >.> I kind of suspected that he was going to but didn't know when and where evidently.

As you can see I'm very honest with Tristam about things that pop up in my head and I should really learn how to control that. lol

Here's another proposal from one of my cousins. My parents and my aunt and uncle rented a beach house for a week and my siblings and my cousins all spent the night there. This is pretty much a yearly thing and my cousin and her boyfriend loved the place (may have been where they first started dating at I don't remember). One night they went for a walk and when they came back my cousin was crying and couldn't speak. She just held out her hand to her mom and we all celebrated.

I'm not really sure what to offer as advice. Good luck though. :)

Thanks for sharing your and Tristam's experience Stine, it does help and give me an idea of what to start thinking of doing. I guess what I was looking for was assurance that it doesn't have to be this big event planned months in advance with excruciating detail, but that it could be just a spur of the moment type of deal.

The time I did this, I had just got fired from my job.

I still had some money laying around though but not enough to do something extravagent.

I ended up cooking a full meal and having a candle-lit dinner. Went into the main room of the house where the fireplace was and had a cozy fire going and then turned the DishTV to the sirius slow/romantic tunes. Danced to the music for a little while and then went back to have dessert.

Got down on the knee and well you know how the rest goes. Was to be just a lengthy engagment no plans to be married soon after.

A friend of mine used Scrabble to spell out a short poem for his girlfriend. (Scrabble was their "thing.") After she read it she turned to him and he was on his knee.

Another friend just got engaged when her boyfriend, who had been taking flying lessons in secret, flew her over her hometown and proposed in the air.

I don't think it matters whether you go small and sweet or huge and elaborate. Good luck popping the question.

  1. Drink 12-15 beers
  2. Import some snow
  3. Write "Will you marry me?" in aforementioned snow
That's how we do it in Canadia, minus the importing of snow.

Personally, I don't think it has to be something extraordinary. There doesn't have to be a full stadium of people or the entire family tree there to witness. Something meaningful is just enough for any woman I would think. If its thoughtful and sweet it will always stand out as a beautiful moment in her mind.

Good luck, Lucki ^^

I'm not engaged or proposing anytime soon, but got a nice little ring deal for my one year with my girlfriend.

She always does her work in the same chair in our apartment, and i used to scare the crap out of her with a plastic spider hung from fishing line draped over the lamp. She saw the line this time, so she said i better not do, "Any of that spidery shit tonight", so i tied the spider's 8 legs to look like they were holding the ring, and when i dropped it in front of her she punched the spider and the ring went flying.

She went looking for what flew off and found the ring right next to our radiator.

I thought i had a pretty cool one until i read this:

This one just puts me to shame.

I say, honesty is the best policy.

Look her deep in the eye, hold up the ring and say:

"I was told to get the first one out of the way while I was still young and had no assets to split."

I was proposed to in a very romantic way and I will remember it always. Family owns a beach house w/ a private beach. He buried a bottle with a note in it on the beach and during our nightly stroll on the beach we found it; he did not say a word. The note was addressed to My Darling and I read it aloud, it ended saying, "You complete my life, come grow old with me." As I read this line he was on his knee with the engagement ring in a sea shell ^^

You want her to always treasure the memory and maybe someday you will over hear her telling your grandchildren how romantic you were.

It doesn't. I had planned on asking her anyway, but I had just gotten over a fairly harrowing illness in my heart and took it as a sign to get things moving :)

I had planned to ask Nina on stage at a rock band concert. But at the last minute the canceled, so..

We had a fight the night before and I went and bought the ring afterwards and was waiting for her in her apartment. She came home from work and I held her hands I told her that I was sorry for the fight, and that it really made me think about things..

And then I got down on one knee. She started crying 'cause she thought I was going to break up with her. Haha. Either way, it was romantic. Best of luck proposing.

Lmao talk about a mind fuck XD

I took my fiance out to this lake near by where we live and I asked him to marry me :p

we've been married since 9/17/07 now lol

I proposed to Chii in my house. My family was out shopping and she was playing with my 2 dogs. I had told her the night before I had a present for her so I told her to close her eyes as I was going to give her present. When I told her she could open her eyes I was down on one knee with the box with the ring in open. I had all sorts of elaborate plans but I couldn't afford to do any of them and i'd been waiting for a couple of months to ask her so I just went for it.

That is honestly one of the funniest things I've ever read on these forums, lol

I can't offer any advice on how to propose to your girl, Lucki, but I can sum up in one single picture the worst idea of a proposal:

Yeah... just don't.

Proposals don't have to be this big elaborate thing with months of planning, but it's always nice to put some thought into it. Just proposing while doing something you both enjoy together is always good, as long as you don't, say, blurt it out at the drop of a hat without thinking when you don't even have a ring. >_> (I still said yes, but I actually thought he was joking at the time, lol.)
