Question to all Wii owners

Yeah, I've had over 9 different people play my Wii so far, 2 who have barely played video games in their lives, and had no problems with it being tossed by accidents. Of course I always make sure that they use the strap, but it honestly doesn't look like it would stay attached with too much force. These people who are breaking random stuff are idiots, you can swing the Wiimote as much as you like, but none of the games require so much force that you start shattering stuff, people need to stop flinging the remote like they're playing the actual sports, it's a game.

I dont even think in actual sports people swing that hard. lol.

its a simple thing. If youve broken something by losing grip on your remote, youre an idiot. Its not hard to hold it without it slipping. Not once have I used the strap, I find it pretty useless.

I'm not so certain that the strap would break easily. I've tried tugging on the strap to see if it would snap and haven't had it break yet. That's with directly pulling the strap away from the controller, so it's more direct force on the strap than you would get by losing your grip and the wiimote spinning. The only reason I can see why people could break the strap is if it gets frayed from a watch or bracelet or something, because there's not really any way to damage it while it's in-use.

Actually, if you arc the wiimote, the force exerted on the wrist strap IS directly away from your body, not at an angle.

Good point, but your hands would have to be covered in oil or something for the wiimote to slip out of your hands. Even then, the strap still wasn't breaking when i was applying force, so I'm still doubting that it just snapped without any help.

Penny Arcades assumption of what happens with the Wii-mote

LOL, I'll bet that's it.

Ah, gotcha. Don't know anyone else from home with one yet. We get to be the cool kids lol

Ya we are lol. Besides you, I only know 3 people with one. A lot of people I'm friendly with at school have expressed interest in getting one around/after christmas though.

Got covers for my 3 remotes, causin let it go, maybe slip, but he was trying to hit home runs in baseball. The strap that comes with the rubber covers broke. But being Nintendo controler, it was fine. Nintendo stuff can take alot more punishment then PS/any other system.

Gone threw 3 sets of batterys in 2 controlers since release day, baught recharable batterys now.

Yeah, I bought some rubber covers the other day, I like the feel of them, but they made it more difficult to press most of the buttons so I took them off. The replacement straps they included did look flimsy, but the ones that came with my wiimotes are still going strong so I never checked them out.

Yea, if you have a game that uses + and - alot, I can see that being a problem. not a big deal for zelda at least. One thing I hate is changing batterys with it on.

I'm one to play with the cover for batters on remotes, so at least it prevents me from breaking the cover. :p

Actually Zelda was the game that I found them annoying, but then I only have Zelda and Wii sports. When I didn't have to change gear I loved it. I might just take a knife to the thing and open up the - and + buttons though. As for the batteries I'd just peel it off fast and straighten it out after it was off, although putting it on is still a pain.

Because of the press about people throwing their wiimotes, Nintendo has issued a "recall" on the wrist straps. If you were dumb enough to throw it and break your wrist strap, you can fill out a form here and get the new, stronger wrist straps for free. You don't have to send your straps in, just fill out the form and they'll send you replacements, it's not even technically a recall.

Apparently starting December 1st, all wiimotes that come packaged with a Wii will have the new strap, but the additional wiimotes you buy will most likely have the old strap.

The difference in the straps:

People who throw remotes have issues. And you are right, it technically isn't a recall on our part. Nintendo just happens to have the best customer service compared to what Sony or Microsoft would do for you, i.e. make you buy the new straps.

Yeah, Nintendo's customer service is awesome, the recognized a problem and had a solution out within a few weeks. It's even more amazing when you consider the shit Sony pulls.

One of my friends had his 360 go out on him not too long ago. I told him that it was shitty for that to happen, and he replies "It lasted a year. It's not so bad." And I'm here thinking "What are Sony and MS doing? Are people expecting their consoles to break like this and be shit out of luck?" About a week after he got a new 360 (he had a warranty from a game store for an extra year, so he got his new one replaced), a recall was announced from Microsoft. So that gave me some faith in MS as far as their systems going out goes.

Now Sony is another story. I remember getting one of the first PS2's. Then like the day after the warranty was off, it stopped playing PS1 games, blue disc PS2 games, and any sort of regular CD. It only read DVD's. I called Sony on this and they told me "Just give us $200 for shipping and handling and we'll fix it for you." Me: "Fuck you." It took them about another six months to finally acknowledge that they fucked up and recalled the PS2. Of course, I opened mine so they wouldn't take it back.

Now comes Nintendo. I never, EVER, hear much about their systems breaking. Not since the original NES when the whole spring loaded thing stopped working after a while. And even then it was still "fixable". Last "epidemic" I heard of from Nintendo, before the Wii straps, was something about a crack forming on DS Lites. And not even a week after it started getting press, Nintendo replied with "We haven't witnessed any of this, but give our customer service a call and we'll take care of you if this has happened."

And my same friend who had is 360 shit on him told me "You should get the plan from GameCrazy, it's really good." I told him "I have 100% faith in Nintendo products. And if my Wii were to somehow break, I know Nintendo would most likely take care of me, as long as it's something that usually happens with a new game system (see: epidemic)." "Well, Nintendo isn't just in it for the games you know. They want money too." "Yes, but I know for a fact they won't fuck me or any of their other customers like Sony does."

While yes, Nintendo does want to make money, they do know the importance of taking care of their customers. They won't take a blind eye to their consoles breaking down until someone tries to bring them down with a class action lawsuit (see: Sony PS2). So in conclusion... NINTENDO WOOOOO!

Yeah, I didn't even bother with buying the 1 year warranty at the gamestop where I got my Wii. I've never had any problems with Nintendo consoles before and given how strong the wiimotes are from the idiots tossing them through everything, I doubt I'll see anything with my Wii.
