Ok, so I just started really working on my BLU. Only lvl 11 now, but I'm trying to get all the moves out of the way as soon as I can. So I'm doing my research, and of course come upon the Beast Weakness Chart. Now... I know about this thing, but never really took the time to look at it... cause I was a BLM, ya know?

Anyways, how exactly does it work? I'm thinking there might be something I'm missing. I equipped the Beast Killer trait when I could, and found that on Toadstools it would proc. quite often at times. (sometimes like 3-4 times in a row) Why? Funguars are not in the Beast family, and technically Plantoids are strong against Beasts anyways.

Also, I noticed(it may just be me though), that the move Wild Oats works very well against Bats.(It may be good against other Birds, but haven't checked) Yet, Birds are in a totally different ecosystem than Plantoids.

If anyone has the time to explain this to me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Seems like I have a lot to learn.

Maybe you had another killer effect from some other source, such as food? Beast Killer *should* only result in intimidating beasts. Though of course I'm not too familiar with how intimidation effects and mob families work either, so you may want to hold out for a more experienced explanation.

As for the other effect of monster families, specifically blue magic spell damage, you can actually find mathematical details of that on the wiki page for calculating that:

http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/Calculating_Blue_Magic_Damage

Granted, wiki, subject to being erroneous, formulas derived and not official, blahblahblah.

Ill assume you were using Ginger Cookies to recover MP. Ginger cookies have an added Plantoid Killer effect.

As for the Birds, theyre weak against piercing, which is what Wild Oats is

Wow, they do have Plantoid Killer.... that is a random freaking effect to put on there. And I did consider Birds weak to piercing, but on the Wiki page for Bats it didn't mention any physical dmg type weakness. Thanks Ruffy.

Dammit, there way too much crap to consider here. >.<

Don't forget to face northeast on lightsday on an even tick of the clock without any *ice* resistance but with Moghancement: Conquest active for best results. Oh, and carry a Fortune Egg too.

Both Giant Bats and Bat Triplets are weak to piercing, so Wild Oats is going to have a greater effect on them.

np at all, its kind of a good idea to take advantage of the mobs weaknesses with those spells. Their effectiveness kind of dwindles later on, but then you start to get spells like Frenetic Rip (which is blunt, and can pwn magic pots) or Disseverment (which in turn pwns the crap out of colibri, because its a 5 hit piercing attack)

I never really used the elemental magical blu spells, due to their enormous MP cost and low damage/mp ratio, but enfeebling BLU spells are wonderful, once get get a few notable ones. Frightful Roar (which can overwrite Cocoon... Most people fail to see this) and Filamented Hold/Mind Blast (which you can throw onto Colibri's for slow and paralyze. They cannot return BLU magic.) along with several other notable spells. Although the slow and paralyze cost much more mp than normal slow and paralyze, theyre still effective to a degree.

Ruffy explained it perfectly. Also, the Beast Chart will help you set which spell you need to use against the monster you plan to fight. Using a spell aquired from a monster strong to the monster family you engage will help you get more damage out of it or will help you land the effect most of the time when you cast.

I've actually done some tests with monster correlation effects on magical (damage) spells. The AF head raises it a very disappointing amount, but the actual effect without the AF is decent enough to make up for it, I suppose. What I did was use Frost Breath (lizard spell) on low level mobs. My HP was 1077, and I was level 75. The formula for Frost Breath is (Current HP / 3) + (your level / 0.625), which comes out to 479. I cast it on a Tiny Mandragora (plantoid, neutral family) in East Saruta, and it did the expected 479 damage. Then I did it on a Bumblebee (vermin, weak to lizards) without AF head, and it did 598 damage. Then I cast it on another Bumblebee with the AF head, and it did 608 damage. Unless my math is off, that's a 25% damage boost for the correct family when unresisted, and a 27% boost if you have AF head on.

As for physical spells, I haven't tested that as much. Really all I've noticed is that Frenetic Rip seems to do signifigantly more damage on Puks than on other mobs of the same level (demon > dragon), and of course, that Bludgeon owns skeletons (blunt, 3 hits, and arcane > undead). As for enfeebles, I've always had an easier time landing Frightful Roar on puks and wyverns than on any other mob (again, demon > dragon).

you also have to consider a little problem i ran into

CN pt

Crawlers (vermin) Wildoats(plantoids)

Vermin>plantoids

but...Beetles, crawlers, and insects= weak to piercing

If you use /thf during exp (30+) it may be helpful to keep this in mind, I'm finding that the SA Uppercut< SA Jet Stream (3 hits duh i know) simply because of mob being strong to it.

It's hard to land on them but the damage increase isnt noticeable, this wouldnt be such a big deal if the exp mob for low lvs more or less are vermin type.

Sandspin is very good at your lv San, it's easy for dunes since chances are you'll camp in a place that isnt link risky. Using aoe moves as you get into higher areas tends to be a problem.

Breath spells like poison breath(only one i use) were kinda useless besides the nice 3hp/tick poison but when i reused them at the 30s my hp of course was higher and was getting 90-100 for 22mp on it mobs, it's a slim conal attack as well, so it's easy to use.

A question about the aoes centered around the caster, they tend to be very small radius, I recall soloing on blu in rolanberry and cast it at the <bt> with other mobs in the way, suprisingly they dont hit them.

However when they link the radius of the spell seems to extend just slightly to them. Anyone ever notice this, and what spells?

I'd like to add that wearing a moldy earring and using physical spells(like some blu i've seen) and using no magic attacks, wont help you lol

Welcome to the world of not just slamming a mob with your most powerful spell... >_>

I actually find the unconsidered depth within Final Fantasy XI to be one if its most powerful draws.

Bats are listed as birds in this game, and share their weaknesses.... A scientist would have field day with this game...

I think they'd be more interested in the manifestations of elemental energy, undead walking around, arcane devices, walking plantoids, the ability to cast magic, and being able to bleed profusely without any surface injury to worry about the classification of bats as birds.

The only other classification bats could have would be Beasts.

But if we were to relate ffxi to rl, then theyd be under Vermin

If what I'm thinking about is true, then the classification of the family as "Birds" is really just a poor localization. I'm thinking that the Japanese name is closer to "Things with Wings."

And roaches grow into moths, yet catipillars grow into... nothing. lol, yeah there are some odd things in this game past the normal fantasy shit.

Bats went on strike when they started getting called winged rats. So the union put them on the Birds category to evade a lawsuit. lol

Now that I reflect on all your comments, I find it really cheap that BLU (and BLM) can't get MP from undead when they clearly have mage jobs. Where the heck do they get that magic from???? @.@)?

Lol, we'd only have 2 families then :P

"Those with wings" and "Those without wings"

Think its more an issue of undead being strong to Dark magic, this immune to Aspir/Drain :P Since Undead can run out of MP.

I think its more interresting that Magic Hammer won't work, despite being light basd =(

It's because of old RPG physics that you can't drain MP from undead (regardless of whether it's dark magic or blue magic, light-based or dark-based, etc.). At least it's not like some games, where if you cast Drain or Aspir on an undead, it heals the undead and hurts you, or gives your MP to the undead. :P
