At the behest of Algus, I tried out the server he is playing on now.
It was a strange experience: I have been playing on Queztalcoatl since I started playing - it's the only one I know. The thing I noticed most about Algus' new server (alexander) is that it is empty. SE should have some cricket noises to denote that server. There were (literally) five people at the South San d'Orian AH. I didn't see a single shout in the 45 minutes I played there.
I guess if you don't like having a lot of people around, and having a lot of new people around, it might be an attractive option. However, for me at least, why play an MMORPG without the MMO? I like how crowded Quetzalcoatl is - to me, it seems more like a real world if there are constantly PC's going about their business, throngs of people around the AH, trains of people going across La Theine.
The other difference that really (and surprisingly) unnerved me was the fact that I didn't recognize anybody! I missed knowing other players, if only by name. Where was Gofive hawking goods in her skivvies? Where was Human with his odd name? Where were Shinreaver and Bigfoot? Where were Analcarrot and Toiletcactaur risking account deletion to play with their... "poetic" names?
The people - even ones I never PT'd with or interacted with at all - are important. Imagine loading up Final Fantasy VII and finding that all the people were different, even the townsfolk? Truly not something I'd welcome.
Well, I guess that's really the end of my little story. I don't think I'll be going on Alexander that much (probably delete the content ID or use it for a Quetzalcoatl mule.) Anybody have anything to add?
