I didn't really want to create a new thread, but I thought that this wouldn't really belong to any of the ongoing threads either, so here I go. I invite any other Midgard refugee to share your experiences in here, as well as any of our hosts to share your experiences and views with us.

Today I had an experience that went from bad to sort of amusing.

I'm not sure how's the relationship with Japanese players in Quetz, but I can't recall having a bad experience with them on Midgard. I helped them some and they sometimes helped me, we even teamed up to kill Nidhogg or formed a suicide trio party to kite Fafnir around the Aery for laughs. Some ended in my friendlist and we have small chats with the autotranslator from time to time.

I went to duo an orc in the past version of the glacier for a wotg mission with a linkshell mate, she coming as Ninja and me as Red Mage. Mighty Strikes + getting stunned from Battle Dance got us both killed when we got it at about 10%. Not having used Reraise, I decide to come back as White Mage to raise my dead partner and give it another try with a ls Rdm that would be joining us.

While I’m making my way to the spot where my dead friend was, two Japanese players show up there, also a Rdm and a Nin, named Ascari and Rna respectively. My dead partner politely asks them for a raise. She gets neither reply nor raise.

I end up arriving where her body lies, raise her and while she gets unweakened our ls Red Mage joins us. The Japanese duo popped the orc and I try to ask them politely with the autotranslator if they want to team up (so we don’t have to wait for the time they would take to duo it and to have more chance of success for both groups). Again, we don’t get a reply.

An interesting note is that when my dead friend saw them they were wearing linkshell pearls but when I got there and asked them to team up they weren't wearing their pearls anymore and had activated their mentor status, as if they intended to hide that fact.

At this point I decide not to raise them if they die, and it turns out that the Nin dies more or less the same way that we did at about 5%. The Red Mage manages to survive thanks to his Nin sub and kites the mob a bit hoping that bio will end up killing it. The Ninja reraises while he’s doing that, the Rdm gets killed and the Ninja finally uses his 2-hour on the Orc, killing it. He apparently used Reraise again, but the Rdm is still dead and he has no way of raising him.

Right when they killed it we went to the spot where it’s popped, as while all this happened, another Japanese group was gathering there. We didn’t want to wait again if they turned out to be as unsupportive as the previous duo so we popped it as quick as we could. This seemingly prevented Rna to get the cutscene from killing the orc, although this was unintended. It also confused the other group, who believed that we just fought it with the Rna and Ascari and were popping it again for some weird reason.

Right after we engage the Orc I invite the newcomer group to join us, and we form an alliance that swiftly deals with it.

Once we are done, Rna attempts getting the cutscene again, resulting in him popping the Orc and having to run for his life. With the ally, we watch the Orc slowly walk back from the zoneline to his spawning point before leaving. We congratulate each other and leave courteously. I don’t know the fate of the Red Mage, as he wasn’t at the spot where he died, but my guess is that he home pointed; couldn't have raised him then regardless if I wanted or not.

My first thoughts were: that wouldn’t have happened in Midgard, at least not on a mission nm that doesn’t drop anything. So I went to check in ffxiah and both Rna and Ascari turned out to be Quetzalcoatl natives. I also checked the members from the party we ended teaming with and three of them were from Midgard while the other two were from Quetz.

This behavior shocked me, and I would like to know if, in here, it’s more commonplace that I’m used to or I just had really bad luck with one of my first experiences in my new home.

I want to say it's bad luck because I didn't have too many troubles with Japanese players, but you always have to remember that people are people and can be assholes sometimes. As far as the English community having a bad relationship with the Jap community, I can't really be sure on this but I have to say it wasn't that bad considering I had no problems out of them. I've heard people have trouble with Jap players on many servers so it's not like it's just Quetz or something.

Seems to me that it's a 50/50 deal. Half the time you'll find groups who want nothing to do with you, and the other half have no problem teaming up.

Our server has a quite large Japanese population, from what I understand other Japanese players have in the past transferred to here because of the high numbers, you'll find on japanese peak hours this server can be quite busy.

I've met some nice players from that side of the pacific but like any other cuture not everyone is open and friendly some in fact just prefer to interact with their own immediate friends. Sorry Viena that your first experince with strangers went this way, hopefully future random encounters will not be this way.

Quetz was JP dominated for the large majority of its time and during the major points of the game's life cycle.

Ideology changed over time. There were mostly elitists and MPKers early on, but over time we learned to accept and respect each other. Last I played seriously there was a very friendly balance and a lot of JP and NA shells had merged together.

I like to have fun and /wave & /welcome to random strangers sometimes. When I did this yesterday...I got ignored:shok:. Back in the old world people almost always would /wave or something friendly like that back :). At one point I even /poked a passing taru blm that looked like me , he paused on the other side of the b.mines ah wall for a long while before entering mh.

Several people passing by did examine and walk off like they were checking out a zoo exibit :nono: (~6 ls members were gathered in b.mines chatting and re-pearling members).

I will say having to camp these stupid NMs nobody cares about with all of the other Drks on this server has brought a lot of us together in order to get things done. We were two Drks short of a full alliance earlier today JP and NA, and at one point two of our Drks lost their connection right as the NM spawned. The NM hadn't spawned for at least 5 hours straight, so I think our alliance realized this and we ended up holding the NM for about 10-15 minutes until everyone was able to get back online and reinvited.

Makes for some interesting conversations. Also my new best friend is Tigerheart. Some JP who understands a bit of english that transferred from Odin to Midgard and is now on Quetz. He is apparently also very fond of Billy's Bootcamp rofl. Awesome guy

I love our JPs ; ;

JPs really disliked NA players back in the day, i guess it comes from the whole elitism thing (not to mention the fact they got the game before we did) and the fact that we had such a large JP population on quetz...although I readily admit that for the most part NA players were pretty stupid, and I preferred to party with JPs on my BRD. Hell, I even went as far as installing JP language packs, and JP FFXI so I could use google translator to get JP invites haha!

As time progressed the gap closed, however a lot of JPs still outwardly do not like English speakers and want nothing to do with them. Then again, some of the most skilled JP players i've seen have teamed up and merged shells with some of the better NA players...at least when I played. I always enjoyed JPs in our parties...they were typically well geared and knew their jobs (go figure).

I think you were just unlucky...same could have happened with some NA morons too. As said above youll have good/bad experiences with all players, regardless of nationality. Ive allied with jps on faf/nid/vrtra/etc and it was always a lot of fun.

Precisely. I'm aware that different worlds have better or worse relationships with the Japanese community. I personally noticed quite a difference (for good) when I went from Ragnarok to Midgard back in 2005.

My point was that I realized that I had no clue how it was on Quetz yet, and if I should expect situations like this to occur often with them or not. I just didn't want to make assumptions based on my currently narrow sample and that's basically why I ended up asking in here.

Being a night owl, I have partied with a lot of JP parties. I have been in parties where they have tried their best to make me part of the group, and have given me advice, and I have been in parties where I was just taking up a space and the only things they said in Auto-translate other than fishing calls was "good Bye" if indeed they warned me that we were disbanding.
They can be rude, or they can be quite nice, but so can Americans, but as a people, I have usually found them to be competent and generally polite and tolerant . The ones that don't like anyone who doesn't speak JP seem to be a minority, however, they are definitely there. We have all seen the Japanese shouts in WG that are obviously a party or mission call that go "undecipherable squiggles 2/6 undecipherable squiggles" You get the same (from their perspective) from us. It's a language barrier that will probably never be broken. They will always be a step ahead, since SE is a Japanese Company, and all the cool stuff will be released there first.

Just rambling...

I personally almost never even bother inviting JP to merits since most are jponly or refuse to dignify your /tell with a response and in the end they aren't even that good at playing like they used to be in the past. There are nice JP but a pretty solid majority seem Xenophobic here. The Midgard JP are pretty nice though since they at least respond to you when ya talk to em. Oh and if you want to see rudeness /check Raizondetre. That jp HATES it if you /check it and is pretty stupid to boot. My last run in from trying to look at it's bazaar culminated in "her" offering me (as best as i can figure out) sex with her moldy vagina and approximately 30~50 flist apps to clog up my message bar. It's also rather amusing when JP flee in terror at you /checking them.

Well you see, the things with most of the asian culture in general, I'm not saying all are, but most, according to what my girlfriend has told me since she's Vietnamese, is that most asians have a high ego and are very prideful. This could probably be traced back through their ancestors and what not, but most asians want to be at the top, which probably makes a lot of them very competitive with each other and often elistists.

Now of course, Asians can be very friendly people as well. They are human just like anyone else. It really comes down to the person as an individual and the way they grew up and what not. Some people can be very nice and helping, while others can be a real jerk. It also depends on how most NA or other players treat them as well. I'm not sure on the history of Midgard and whether or not if the server has always been a small server or not, but usually the smaller amount of people in a place, the more people get to know one another and often are friendlier to each other. Yet the same can be said in the reverse, the smaller the group of people, the more you know each other's business and gossip spreads around. So it all depends on the person, but in the end, it comes down to knowing each other a little more than being in a place filled with a lot of people.

I'm glad to hear your experience in Quetz had some good times though. Hopefully you'll have more good times as well as you grow into Quetz. I think for those Midgardians who shun the idea of their server being deleted and being shipped off to our server should actually try to place themselves in an opposite mind set.

All the Midgard people are still together in the same way, only they have a whole load of new players amongst their players. It really isn't that bad when you think about it. Other than the economy and the whole new flow of people being around, the missions, quests, NPC locations, mob-type in each zone are exactly the same between the two servers.
