I think it's unreasonable to ask 18 people to spend more time than the average person spends at work or school in a given day camping/popping a single mob. It's even more unreasonable for someone to be slapped with a 'disloyal' label because they find that to be an unacceptable amount of time. And on the matter of helping - 'helping' for 2 hours in DoR for 2-3 pops is much easier than 'helping' an endgame shell for 3-6 months to 'earn' your gear.
If someone hasn't 'earned' an item, don't give it to them. If a LS is going to hand over an Osode or Noble's or other non-r/e good, you have to expect that some people are going to feel that the item is now theirs. Loyalty to players playing an online game is a funny concept, especially when the loot from 'common goal' activities liky sky/sea/NM pops usually only benefit one player. Mages have next to nothing to gain from Sky, melees next to nothing to gain from Wyrms, quite a few jobs only have one or two worthwhile Relic pieces. A series of dangling carrots for those that can't completely commit their in-game experiences to a single shell.
Leaders need to be realistic. Don't tell a new recruit you're going to get (item X) soon, because that either pisses off older shell members or encourages that new member to shelljump once they have what they want. Alternately, don't lead members along and say you're 'gearing up' to do X or Y or that they'll get their items eventually - nobody wants to devote time and energy to causes that are ultimately futile.
There is no easy answer. Go too casual, and nothing gets done. Turn it into Serious Business and you attract the wrong people. There is a balance to strike, but there are many that have no idea how to find it and even more that don't know it exists.
There is a balance. It's what you agree to when you join the linkshell.
When I say I expect you to come for 18 hakutaku runs if you want to join my run, you come for 18 hakutaku runs. If this is unacceptable, then...
...DO NOT JOIN.
This is not a difficult concept. You are unwilling to spend 10 hours at this event? DO NOT JOIN.
By me telling you, this event will take 10 hours, we are going to get everyone a hat, don't sign up if you can't stay til the end... by signing up, you are agreeing to that.
Now I'm not talking about people who do endgame for fun. There are those people out there. And there are events out there just done for fun. Mostly these are events done just once for the purposes of doing them.
However to get all your sky gear requires basically a week of farming for an entire linkshell. If you aren't willing to farm for people who are farming for you...
DO NOT JOIN.
"If someone hasn't 'earned' an item, don't give it to them. If a LS is going to hand over an Osode or Noble's or other non-r/e good, you have to expect that some people are going to feel that the item is now theirs."
Let me focus on this for a minute.
First off most endgame gear is ex/rare.
Secondly, just because an item is in fact now theirs, does not excuse a person from obligation. By joining a sky shell, by accepting gear, you are agreeing that you are there for the people who were there for you. That's the point of a freaking linkshell! They help you, you help them. If a person gets what they want and doesn't furfil their end of the bargain, all they are is a thief. They stole everyone's time.
I'm not saying you're a slave forever. I'm saying... around 30 people were needed to get your gear? Your obligation is around 30 people get their sky gear that you helped farm for. I'm not saying you're a slave til the end of time... I'm saying what you get out and put in should be equal.
If the general community felt what you think is acceptable should be the standard, all our linkshells would need to operate very differently. Abjurations would have to be thrown out as opposed to given to people in order to keep them in the shell until they already paid all their dues. Osodes would have to be stored on mules until people worked off all the linkshell demands of the recipiant. Perhaps all Osodes would be sold at Batallia and people would have to make enough gil to buy their own osode there.(not a bad idea)
