quewsx and quedia hacked my account.

Yeah, everything in game should be cheap, just like I expect my future fiancee to get me a cubic zirconia when he proposes to me.
It's like diamonds, without the expense!

Oh my god, I leave for the weekend and this topic gets downright hilarious. Damn, I missed some awesome.

i wonder how many people will quit if they get their account hacked like i did. i deactivated my account and deleted ffxi from computer. wow that freed up so much hard drive space.

Eh, I didn't feel like saying anything until this point. Tim kinda beat me to it already, but still.

I can't fucking stand it when people act like this shit is everybody else's fault, and they're innocent in the whole affair. You're a fucking idiot who doesn't take care of his shit, and/or actively uses programs that you shouldn't, I don't know which, but they go hand in hand, so that's a minor detail.

Then, after fucking up, you cry to SE to fix your mistake which, as Tim said, is extremely easy to exploit, and you're lucky you got it back to begin with. Then, when they won't bend over backwards to fix, again, your mistake in exactly the way you want, you start bitching and blaming them for this.

There are two people responsible here:
1) RMT, for being jackasses and doing this to begin with (maybe gilbuyers if you want to include a 3rd)
2) You, for not maintaining your computer.

You people all need to consider yourselves lucky this is just an MMORPG character and not a bank account or something similar.

It fucking pisses me off to see someone piss all over everyone else like you're doing, acting innocent in the whole matter when something like this happens. Yeah, there are shitty, dishonest people in the world... but when you don't bother to protect yourself from them, especially after seeing this sort of thing happen repeatedly, you're just a moron.

I agree with this, for its truth value. Not because of the way he says it.

SE is not responsible for your visits to websites or your use of other programs. The fact that they are doing some character restoration is almost charity. If you were aware that these hackings were happening on a frequent basis, then wouldn't it be wise to check on your character(s) and take the necessary precautions?

If you place some importance on some item of yours, to what length would you go to protect it? Would you hide it under your bed? Would you hide it in a bank safe?
Would you put some insurance on it?

If you do not take the necessary precautions and it gets stolen, how are you not in the fault? Perhaps to a lesser degree than the thief but there is no way that you cannot get any of the blame.
There are people who will say "You should have protected it better! It's your fault that you lost it."
There are people who will say "I'm sorry that this happened, you have my sympathies."

Then there are people who are not going to give a shit.

In the end, if you do take the precautions that you think are necessary, you will probably not get hacked. It does not make you invincible, however, and I think people tend to forget that.

Garvin was nice about it months and months ago.
Kinda unfortunate that things like this are happening... To be honest, assuming this story is in fact true, this is as close to a hacked account as we've ever actually had, I believe. If true, I really hope this turns out well in the end.

That being said, hopefully this will be a wakeup call for many people regarding computer security overall... It really is important. Thankfully this was only a FFXI account. There are a lot worse things that can be stolen, and that's something everyone does need to remember at all times.

I agree with what you're saying Raes, it's just I'm sick of stupid people blaming things on SE. This is an endless cycle:
Jamal said:
Regardless of what lead people to believing that SE needs to change their policy, it's a well-supported arguement. PoL claims that they associate account ownership with CC info, yet you do not need to present current CC info (i.e. prove you are the account's owner) in order to change it to a new credit card. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that that is seriously flawed logic. Therefore, yes, either policy or security or something on their end needs to be changed. Yes, it is the user's responsibility to protect themselves from hackers and the like, however, I don't think the arguement is who is at fault, rather who can do something about it once it happens. The arguement is that when an account does get compromised (for whatever reason) SE should be able and willing (keyword: willing) to get it back to you.

You still somehow gave someone your account information, Ie Username and password. The fact that you didn't know you were doing it isn't a legit argument...you did, and because of that, thats all that has EVER been needed to change CC information. You can't cry wolf now simply because you've been wronged. Where were people bitching about this 4 years ago when the policy came out?
You agreed to the license agreement, or you wouldn't have been playing this game.

More from the past...funny how I was getting ridiculed for saying this months ago, now it seems people are starting to see why I said it:

Jussy, you signed a legal document. That's why they have the license agreement. I didn't read it, but then again I wasn't stupid enough to go and get hacked, now was I?

Tre, this isn't rape, its a fucking video game. Its not Jussy's fault he got hacked, but its a preventable offense. You don't go downtown big city and leave your car unlocked and unattended, you're asking for it to get ripped off. Same precedent here.

1. Don't take precedents from a Video Game forum
2. Watch the News. People / Industries have been getting hacked for much longer than this game has been around.
3. Not protecting yourself on the net is just as, if not, more retarded then not taking proper precautions irl. Yes, you could go into certain areas of the world without proper precautions and come out unscathed, but before doing so you'd always make sure you knew what you were doing beforehand. Just because this is a virtual world doesn't mean there aren't virtual criminals.

People weren't ridiculing the things you were saying, but how you were saying them. Although, even in that side, it appears that most of those folks don't want a candy-coated "protect yourself online" hand-holding philosophy.

Truth be told, I'm more sick of the biweekly Vandoura-laden "watch out! more stuff hack inside your games of video" threads than I am of the folks coming in talking about actually being hacked.

What? Propaganda and paranoia are ALWAYS the best ways of prevention! Don't go on those websites she mentions and either just come here and spam threads for help or bother your linkshell mates. That way, you dont actually have to proactively protect or scan your computer! Avoidance is the best protection!

Clearly

I'd rather post news, and not rumors (re: Chinese hack CIA!zomg)

Moral of the story: Get a good anti-malware program. That means it has to update itself at least once a day, preferably more. Ideally, small RAM/processor footprint, and works more by observing types of activity than by looking for exact virus footprint matches. Should not be reliant on doing a multiple-hour scan in order to find stuff that's gotten in, rather it should catch stuff as it's trying to get in.

I'm rather fond of NOD32. I'm rather *not* fond of Norton or Symantec or whatever they're calling themselves these days.

The issue me and others are having is not that SE didn't protect our computers (although the fact that the password encrypt on POL was broken is a different matter) Its that the process of reclaiming those accounts is a piece of ass and failure. The verification system contradicts itself.

Also, the suspect virus was undetectable when it was first released, aside from a single version of norton, and was distibuted via both common FFXI sites (FFXIAH) and actuall SE sponsored sites (Somepage)

then you understand that even being very protected still makes you at risk, as long as you access the intarwebz.

From my understanding, unless it was a joke, the hackers from china even accessed the pentagon or something.(again could be wrong)

And for the record Jussy made a thread dedicated to him being hacked. Garvin could have easily said "lolcoveryourass" there as well but he didn't.

But that is besides the point, IMHO even being fully protected won't guarantee you immunity from the heavier hackers.

Look where Jussy's thread was that is why Garvin didn't say anything because it would have been flamebaiting dipshit.

How hard is the retreiveal process... My friend got his account hacked and got it back almost instantly, with virtually nothing lost, and a Dlvled WHM

You really have to turn everything someone says into a shitfest. In no way did I mean any malicious intent by what i said. But hey at least you got your 2 incher in there before the thread was closed.

Back on topic. IMHO Jamal said exactly what I meant. You can take preventive measures to protect yourself, however there are only so many things you can do. If a hacker wants to get into your computer, guess what... He/she will.

You're the one saying that he should have said something to Jussy. It would have been flamebaiting that's why you're a dip-shit.

The hackers aren't trying they're just loading crap onto a website more than likely via java. Chances are the virus would have been picked up if Shire was protected because the hackers only care to get the information not if the logger is found they're specifically going after online games not other info. They aren't going to mask it. The first defense is always the user and the issue is black and white.

I thought Jussy was an awesome person. Never did i once say that Garvin should have said something mean to Jussy. Show me one line where I specifically said that.

New and improved viruses are made everyday, and NO, NONE, SIN, ZILCH Antivirus can detect it immediately just as has been said here before. Unless you are going to sit on your ass and never surf the web, only play ffxi chances are you will be at risk.

I browse on a different PC than I play on. That's how I protect myself. Of course, not everyone has the money to have two PCs.
And, unless Shire can show us some type of proof of what trojan was on his computer or something, it more than likely could have been the same crap that hit everyone else in December.
