Quick Question

And some feel the need to flex their orange/red names over people who call them out.

The "flambating" rule never had a solid precedent, and it still doesn't. Mods just enforce it whenever they feel they can use it to their advantage.

Your right to a degree. I have a really hard time determining when something is a flamebait, especially, if it seems like a post with even a decent quantity of merit. It is a very gray area and if you have a sure fire algorithm to determine flamebaits, in every serious sense possible, please tell me how. It would make this role way, way, easier to fulfill. The whole issue regarding flamebaiting on this board seems very inflated. The only goal that rule has is to keep the board civil, with a lone exception of the FB. If people can just respect opinions and be courteous, you would never see a problem with flamebaiting. However, that won't happen, it is the internet. I really try to justify controversial posts before I put them in the flamebait category. Not every nitpickpost is a flamebait. There are some that are though.

QCDN used to be much more civil than it is today. Hell, two years ago, this board my have been infamous, but it had much more respectable arguments. It had way less "STHU!". You can just look back to the history of the board to see there is an issue with attitudes here. We don't try to moderate attitudes, as nice as it would be. We just try to keep the content from pushing the rest of the forum into a general flameboard.

As far as abuse... The only instance I have known of, with an Admin or a Mod abusing powers, was taken care of by Reeve. I know of a few people that strongly dislike me. Some of them I have given 1 infraction to. I have not had to return with further directives because they haven't broken the rules.

Who and where? I don't think it can be stressed enough how much mods rely on a proactive member base to assist us in pointing out those kind of posts. There was a global announcement at one point encouraging use of the report post feature. Use the report post feature, and provide your logic behind why it needs to be reported. It works, and there is no repercussions for it's use.

Aside: Only repercussions I foresee may be if you spam reported posts that have no reason to be reported. Abusing the system has always had repercussions though.

You need to look at intent to determine in most cases, which can only come from an understanding of the userbase (something most mods don't seem to posses)

Example: Skaw telling Hellstorm to STFU
Its intent, rather than trying to get a rise out of hellstorm, or to provoke him into an argument (which would only cause hellstorm to post more, which no one wants) was simply as it reads, to tell him to shut up and go away. His points were old, and invalid the first dozen times they were posted, and that hadn't changed in the intervening day. Rather than going over WHY Hellstorm was being an idiot, Skaw simply took the short route to save reading time (and keeping the words to 4 or less letters so that hellstorm would have an easier time reading it) of all parties involved.

An example of Flambating? The post by Neo quoting me (which was deleted by himself apperantly, instead of editing it like a regular poster is limited to. Must be nice to be orange eh?) in which he basicly tells me to "fuck off." Rather becoming of a moderator, but alas, ces't la vie.

With the skaw situation as well, Uzor wasn't even offended by Skaw's posts:
And no, I weren't offended. I believe I've mentioned it before, but I don't take offense to words. They're just words. I mean, seriously, if anything, "Fuck you" should be a compliment.

Meanwhile, obviously the racism is VERY offensive to a great deal of people. You said earlier to use the report feature...I did on that post. I don't overtly use the report post feature either, but something like that needed attention...and then was ignored.

The mods killed my fun ; ; I was having a jolly good time, and then my posts stopped being responded to =(

i could of edited, but deleting it was just easier. thats all .

You went through the whole process of posting it, and then simply decided to use a power only you have and wipe it away. If someone had quoted it before, would you have simply deleted that post too?

people in upper management (such as companies) have powers regular employees dont have. sometimes they exercise it. so, i removed a post. excuse me. stop executing me because i deleted my own post, really.

i removed the post, because i didnt want going to. if you want to talk about it, PM me. otherwise, im done in the thread.

I made a post that broke the rules entirely and then afterwards realized it and deleted it in hopes of no one seeing a mod break the rules. I am now going to go and take some form of moral high ground, or at least make it look like it and flee the thread.

But I'll really be reading it every day and hope that it all blows over so I can keep my an orange name and find some way to ban the people in this thread at a later date to satisfy my e-go

Remember, you've the need to keep to a higher standard. Blabj got the boot for something he did away from the forums even.

Running away and leaving the issue open (what you're doing) could possibly cause it to die down (This is something I teach in my FB 101 classes) but in cases of moderation (like this) it just leaves it as free fodder to be used against you in the future.

I'm not asking for your head, in fact I wasn't even calling you out. You simply exploded, and then tried to hide it.

Isnt a mod's task to 'moderate' discussion on this board? If that requires deletion or removal of a set post is that not part of the risk we take posting here on a forum that has such a saftey net?

I was told to F off in a post in the flameboard recently, I did not feel the post warrented such a responce but I always thought such things were deemed fair game in the regions of the flameboard. Has this ruling changed at all in the last year? Just curious really.

Setting quite the standard. You make the analogy of a work environment, yet what person in upper management do you know that would be able to get away with not listening to and/or dealing with his employees? Way to try and take the easy way out.

Most of the times I have no issues with a mod doing their job, but when you blatantly disregard the qualms of members and simply ban or edit with no precedent, I will have issues with mods. How about you show a little backbone with the powers you have been given rather than use them for your own personal benefit.

I can't even make a post I find to adequately sum this thread up. (someone! say it! "If you have nothing to say, then don't post.") It isn't that I don't have anything to say...

It is just that, no matter what I say, someone on this board will disagree with me vehemently. So what if Neophytal deleted his own post. Every member here has potentially the same power in most places using the edit feature. It is all in how you say 'tomato.' It is the same means to the end. 'What-if' is just that... 'what-if.' If someone had quoted Neophytal, then he probably would have 2nd guessed his deleting the post. Instead, he probably would have just left it alone and begin to ignore the thread just the same. Nitpicking is just aggravating; especially moreso after intense political debates.

So... this thread had serious questions with answers provided. If thats that, there is really nothing being accomplished here except perhaps provoking more bombastic posts by yours truly. Appended apologies for those that felt I wasted your time in reading this post.

There is a difference between editting to a blank post and completely deleting. If you don't recognize that difference, than there is a problem. That and the whole being able to edit on the flameboard while the rest of us have no edit feature whatsoever.

Is there any resolution on the original question for racial remarks?

To answer the OP, he deserved it. Regardless of what he fealt should have been said or how the mass majority of people believe they should treat any one person, you do not have the right to insult outside the FB so directly. It's in the rules and I am surprised no one has been banned for it besides Meeze considering it's more common than just a few instances.

And I find it ironic that half of you even posted here complaining about a mod when other mods have done worse, even broken rules directly and outright. Now you care, but back then you didn't because you weren't the one getting hurt by it. Really, if you want your opinion to matter, it should be one you actually stand by always, not something that changes at whim to suit your current needs.

He is not Yusuke. That was my mistake.
That is why I reversed my actions and let another mod look at it.

Please, if you're going to get bent out of shape on something, scream at me for making the mistake on banning him as a sockpuppet.

It is quite apparent that rule #2 applies. The sockpuppet is wrong (once again, I'll shout if again if people need me to, that was my mistake). The racial slur infraction is correct.

I split out the StanDarsh post as the OP to a new thread with all comments regarding my permaban epic fail and any crap related to it. It is locked, so no new crap can be added to it. The board also refused all my attempts to then soft delete the OP AND leaving the thread viewable by the masses. (I wouldn't want anyone to shout cover up.) So, I just edited the post after reporting the original contents of the original post.

Here's the rub. I can't find any pertinent punishments in the recent history of QCDN for this offense. I could only find these:

July 2007

February 2007

How relative these punishments are is yet to be determined. Admins have the ability also view infractions given, moderators do not. Infractions may have been given in some instances with racial slurs and they should also weigh on the duration of any action taken.

Quick Summary:
All in all, we see the same problem you do. We have a list of recommended actions, and the punishment for racial slurs is not on that list. Whether you respect my credibility or not, this is the best thing I can offer. We will have to discuss what seems reasonable in the mod forum.

Update?

Sorry, I meant to type this up before going to class. I have spoken with Reeve. I can't say I am enthralled with it, but it is his site. Plus, moderation will only cover the issue up and thats just as stupid as the person using the words anyways. So... without further delay:

Repeated use of what you and I both find to be derogatory terms, as well as many others I am sure, with Reeve's already granted approval, will be categorized as trolling or harassment. On that note, I updated the Flameboard rules to reflect the change.

Is this the same controversy as the word 'c*nt.' Or from the legacy days of Sculli 'n***er,' simply put yes. I don't know if those filters are still on or not. CmdrFly added 'c*nt' to the filter. Everything else is legacy. You can probably expect those to be removed if they are not already.
