Yeah, been a smoker for about 4 years, and Monday decided its time to give it up. I'm trying to just drop it and not think about it. None of my friends really smoke, so as long as I don't buy my own cigarettes I should be ok.

Now, my willpower towards things like this is normally very weak, but I'm feeling good about this one. Also, I've been eating like a horse, which I guess is a good thing because right now I'm weighing in at a whopping 148 pounds.

So anyway, any other fellow smokers have success quitting, and if so, how? I'll take any tips I can get at this point.

never started... good luck

I hear drinking water when you get a craving is a good way to start, or taking a walk or something physical. Hell, do something "else" with your hands now that they're free. I heard that works sometimes too.

Damn man, just eat more.

Be like Jason Statham in War, and just keep some toothpicks on you at all times. It's an oral fixation.

Good for you Tim, I have never had any luck with quitting, one of these days hopefully

Every time you crave it, do something else, and do that something else every time you have a craving. It helped me a lot, but now i'm addicted sorta to other things.

Friend of mine quit smoking last year, and he put on some serious weight. Be sure to get the right amount of exercise, to keep from obesity. As for me I'm a light smoker, never really tried to quit before. Often i go many weeks without smoking. When i do smoke more, in a month I i'd smoke 2 twenty packs. Quiting isn't hard, i just like to smoke sometimes. But yeah watch your weight when your off it for awhile.

They guys making sure he can breathe better for the rest of his life and you think he should be worried about getting fat? How about worrying about not smoking? Lets try reality for a moment here.

Tim, I think you're doing a big thing and I respect you highly for that. I've been smoking for longer than I should be. Already in double-digits at the ripe old age of 25. Its a hard thing to do, you're lucky enough to not live with or hang out with smokers so this will be far easier for you. I find that if I go to my sisters house (a non-smoker) and just keep busy with the kids I dont even think about smoking for hours on end, but if I'm home with my parents (serious smokers) I would get a craving far quicker.

I'm going to be attempting to quit soon again, this time I'm taking my parents with me down that road. It should be... interesting to say the least.

Best of luck to you Tim, I'll be rooting for you!

They say if you get an urge to start again, start with a brand you don't like. And don't put cigarettes within an arm's reach.

Good luck :)

its ok myrrh's addicted to fapping too, :P

I think the best people to get advice from about quiting smocking is from people who failed. Listen to their stories about what they did, and you will know what methods don't work.

It's an oral fixation.
Definately true.

Already in double-digits at the ripe old age of 25.
; ; People keep saying that and it's actually starting to make me feel old being that age...

I really don't have any good advice on how to quit, but once you do, cigarettes will lose it's appeal. I think it took me close to 6 months to really NOT want a smoke, but I still have one occasionally when I drink, but there's no interest in starting up again.

The only way I was able to quit was to have a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and to be hospitalized for two weeks while being hooked up to some damn vacuum to expand my lung, because my lung kept deflating. I was told if I started smoking again that I would have an extremely high chance of a recollapse, so that was my incentive for quitting.

Good luck on quiting though, it's worth it.

When my best friend wanted to quit, we made a deal where every time I saw him smoking I was supposed to take the cigarette out of his mouth and slap him across the face.

It was awkward at first, but two months of face slaps later he is 90% smoke free. He still smokes when he's drunk, so maybe one or two cigarettes a week.

Good luck man.

I said that meaning I've been smoking since I was 12, so I have a 13 year habit. 25 is not old .... ; ; damnit.

good advice i quit for 9 years then after my dad's death stressed out i started again. it is so much harder to quit this time . tim its a 3 day withdrawal after that its in your head . yes water during the 1st three days will help flush you system cold turkey is the way to go. good luck bud
ironically my father died from lung cancer and i unstressed from smoking >.<
towards the end i prayed for his death he was suffering so much. smoking sucks i really been thinking about quitting again a whole lot. i dont want to hear about people who cant quit being weak willed blah blah blah i am one of the most head strong willful people i know. smoking is a psychical problem nicotine is every bit as addictive as heroin or crack.i personally know a few people that quit 300.00/day heroin habits and are clean for many years and can't stop smoking. i quit the 1st time but it was a bitch yes it can be done but man it was hard.tim you can do this and if you should smoke one dont't let it get you down. just keep trying

dont agree with the 1st part of your statement but the 2nd part oh so true
if you dont pick them up you cant smoke them

Agreed Skreb, don't set yourself up for failure by even buying a different brand. Just try to avoid being around smokers in general. If you don't have the cigarettes around you're much less likely to start up again. Usually at some point if you have to go out and get them, you'll realize you really don't want to.

Thankfully I've never had this habit, but I've had a lot of friends and family sucessfully quit cold Turkey, you can do eeet!

One of the main reasons I decided to quit in the first place was because of the passing of my father a few months ago as well. He didn't die from lung cancer, but had heart problems which seem to run in my family, and didn't really follow a healthy lifestyle. I always felt like I was invincible, and nothing I smoke/eat/drink now will ever effect me, but I think it just finally hit me one day.

So far so good. Still eating a ton, but trying to keep it to somewhat-healthy eats. I'll keep updating since you guys are so damn encouraging :)

Whole-grain granola bars. Fill me up, not bad for you at all either. Nature Valley kinda stuff. Just keep your mind away from it, keep yourself busy until you pass out asleep. Go Timbo Go!
