Racial profiling to be legalized!

It's harassment when you know it's only happening to you and your people

I'd like everyone who thinks this bill isn't a form of racism or harassment to consider the following:

You live in town that's generally middle class...there is an even mixture of renters and homeowners in the ares...now there have been a few instances where there was a drug bust or a wanted man was hiding out in the town a couple years ago, but since those things happened the local police set up roadblocks and checkpoints at the entrance to your neighborhood during certain times of the year, (mostly around the time inspections are supposed to be updated) now you go by these checkpoints, they obviously look at your seatbelt and your inspection sticker, and they either cite you for not having either or they wave you off depending on if they think they should question you further.

Do you feel that in this situation you are being protected? or would you think after the 4th or 5th time this happened that you were being prosecuted?

oh and another variable: you ask some of your friends and relatives in neighboring towns if this has ever happened to them and they haven't

this happens in my neighborhood at least twice a year, it's gotten so badly that everyone who lives in my neighborhood and are friends on facebook warn each other when it happens

go through something like that for a couple years and tell me that it's not harassment

If you have your seatbelt on and have a valid inspection sticker, you shouldn't have anything to worry about unless you're in this country illegally driving your friends legal car and you do something stupid. If cops set up a checkpoint at a specific location near your neighborhood, there's a reason that they are doing it (like your drug bust or a wanted person hiding out) and it's not to harass you. The cops check inspection stickers because an expired inspection sticker means that the car is on the road illegally and may not be insured. Guess what happens next if you get in an accident? You broke the law and you get a ticket and or go to jail. You can't claim harassment if you're breaking the law. Blame it on the idiots that break the law. If you don't like it, move. Oh yeah, I forgot. It's hard to find a place to live when you're in this country illegally. In that case, move back to your own fucking country.

In addition to this bill, they should pass another bill that requires anyone who works in this country to speak English and you have to prove it when you obtain a work visa. This is the Unted States of America and we speak English. If you don't want to learn how to speak our language, go back to your own fucking country.

I've also heard that males born with a double Y chromosome are more likely to perpetrate violent crimes. Does that mean that any law discouraging violent behavior is specifically targeting them? No.

Easy solution: send them to Fiorina 161.

This is the United States and we also speak Spanish, Hungarian, Russian, French, German, Korean, Vietnamese Chinese, Japanese and lots of other languages. There are plenty of native-born U.S. citizens who haven't mastered English; if someone can get along without it, why do you care? Does it piss you off when you see a "Piso Mojado" sign at the supermarket?

You miss the main point of this country's main language being English. I worked Haz/Mat emergencies for 12 years in a 911 center type environment and I used to take calls from trucking company's and emergency rooms dealing with chemical spills and chemical exposures. When the person calling couldn't speak a lick of english, it took precious time for me to get a translator on the phone so I can find out what was happening. In that time, people could have died or have been seriously injured all because they couldn't speak english. You want to talk about native-born U.S. citizens? How about native American Indians? Most of them speak better english than the rest of the people you listed. No it doesn't piss me off to see a "Piso Mojado" sign at the supermarket especially if it's on a sign warning me of a wet floor.

Also, I'd like to add this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wet_floor_-_piso_mojado.jpg

As you can see, the sign is in english first.

Actually, I'll diverge from Duddits here and say that yes, it does irritate me slightly to see a Piso Mojado sign.

Not because I have anything against Hispanics, but for a fairly simple reason: In order to have a shared culture, we require a shared language. And the more pushes we have towards removing the need for a common language, the harder it is to create that common culture.

I do not hew to this "multicultural salad bowl" concept that is presently being pushed by various interest groups. I prefer the old melting pot analogy, because it implies integration. Rather than have a dozen or more mini-cultures, all with their own languages, priorities, and frankly mistrust of the other mini-cultures, I'd rather have us return to the ideal of us all being Americans first. Not African-Americans, or Hispanic-Americans, or whatever hyphen people want to apply to differentiate themselves from the rest of us.

Just plain old Americans.

Point taken, but for them to require English proficiency, we'd have to make English the official language of the United States. It happens at the state level, but the federal level fails to gain traction year after year after year. Most immigrants already know they need English to make it in this country. Even if they don't speak it well, their kids learn it. English proficiency improves with each generation. That's assimilation in action.

the only thing I see here in this page of the thread is "Here in murika we speak murikan! if you don't like it you can giiiiiit outttttt"

seriously, lets try not to be so ignorant

That's cute. Paint anyone who thinks that the onus is on immigrants to make the effort to at least learn a functional grasp of the language as intolerant rednecks.

Let's get back to what's really important in this thread: bashing Arizona.

Having passed through the Sky Harbor airport, I thoroughly endorse the bashing of Arizona.

Now this I agree with you on. Some might say that becoming a naturalized American citizen is no picnic either. They just need to tweak the process to include learning english as a requirement.

Speaking of Arizona and their "But we're not racists, we swear!" law, the teabaggers have been oddly silent about it:

Eugene Robinson said:
But where was the Tea Party crowd? Isn't the whole premise of the Tea Party movement that overreaching government poses a grave threat to individual freedom? It seems to me that a law allowing individuals to be detained and interrogated on a whim -- and requiring legal residents to carry identification documents, as in a police state -- would send the Tea Partyers into apoplexy. Or is there some kind of exception if the people whose freedoms are being taken away happen to have brown skin and might speak Spanish?

Everytime I hear the term "Teabagger" I just want to put my nuts in someones mouth.

Again, we agree on something.

Don't you always wanna put your nuts in someones mouth?

bazinga

edit: there's nothing wrong with having different points of view on something, it's when we allow them to get out of control and tears us apart that makes it bad
