The right to bear arms is the only thing that keeps war from happening on our soil. One would have to be fucking insane to invade an America where every back-woods okie fuck (like me) has numerous firearms lying about. I'm afraid the current generation of shave chested emo faggot kids standing on a line, that they're surely too anti-establishment to stand on, with a fistful of liberal upbringing, firmly stating, "Hey, you can't do that!" isn't gonna keep back the Russians.

Abolishing things is a fools errand. Historically it's worked out so well, amirite? Cocaine is illegal, yet I can get an 8-ball a hell of a lot easier, and shockingly faster, than I can get a handgun. The answer is not stricter laws, it's harsher punishments.

That said, we need prison reforms. Keep the cushy prison programs around for light offenders(Multiple DUIs, etc,) but those who commit violent crimes should be thrown in a brick and mortar box, a small window for some fresh air, and given only bread and water. No excercise time, no TV time, no Books.

The main reason prisoners are granted the privelege to have these things is because in a way, it keeps them occupied. If you give children nothing to do, just tell them to sit in their room, they're much more likely to get themselves in trouble. If you let prisoners, be it violent murders or drug pedalers who are serving hefty sentences for their crimes, sit idle, they're much more likely to be uncooperative and misbehave.

Also, what if people are accused of violent crimes are actually innocent? It does happen. I had a guest speaker for a class, a former prostitute, at the wrong place at the wrong time, who couldn't read or write. She served 25 years in jail for a murder she didn't commit. She was exhonorated just before her sentenced ended. She was forced to sign a paper by law enforcement saying she did it, when she didn't even know what she was signing. Her assigned counsel for lack of a better word sucked and was passive to her case. Misconduct of law enforcement and by defense attornies does occur, knowingly or unknowingly. To lock her up and throw away the key for 25 years when she didn't even commit the crime is harsh. The worst thing - the state did not even compensate her for their error and she lost 25 years of her life. The programs and freedoms within the jail are to reward good behavior. If they misbehave, they can be taken away from them just as quick as they were granted to them. They do not have the right to the programs, they're earned.

Or what if their crimes were provoked by a situation, such as a crime of passion where a infuriated spouse, not in the right state of mind, killed their husband or wife or their lover? They aren't really a danger to society, they were provoked into the situation, likelihood of reoccuring is extremely low... It isn't cut and dry.

IMO, anything the military can freely carry around while on US Soil, Civilians and Citizens should have access to firearms equally as devistating. The Right To Bear Arms is The Right To Protect Yourself From a Tyrannical Government. Limiting Citizen firearm power to simple rifles that are only suitable for hunting these days, shotguns, and pistols is giving said potential tyranny the ability to flatten any resistance. When we're stuck with cap guns and water pistols, all it'll take is a new party with a fake political agenda. Now, I'm not saying it'll actually happen, but thats why the right to arm yourself exists.

Just because a very small minority abuses said right, the rest of the country shouldn't be punished for. Instead of Gun laws making it harder to obtain a firearm(because it just doesn't work,) Gun laws should have unnecessarily drastic punishments for breaking them. EX: Armed robbery with your $350-700 pistol? $500,000 fine and 50 years in prison.

i understand just about everything except for this, while it may seem small but books do educate society, I can see that you may have included it because prisoners gain educations and get themselves off of their sentence or lighten it, you could restrict the kind of books they can read but I suppose that'd be a "cruel and unusual punishment"

but then again I recall a certain violation of human rights fell under "cruel and unusual punishment" for clicking a light switch on and off...

just my thoughts

short version

when I think books in prison I think malcolm X and MLK, and theres Tookie(sp?) but not everyone uses them as a way to move forward with their lives instead of today getting education from taxpayers and getting out

If America pisses you off so much, either leave and go to another country that has just as many problems as we do, or stay here, be thankful you live here with heating, electricity, plumbing, and a roof over your head, and do something productive. Bitching on a video game board solves nothing. Get active, join a protest, write to your senator, something, anything.

You aren't going to stop people commiting crimes with guns from getting guns. It's been shown time and time again that laws that ban firearms don't remove them from the streets. The only thing it does is make them cost more for those that would go out and buy one in the first place.

It does make it harder for children to get one to take to school and gun down 10 or 20 of their classmates though...

THANK YOU!

I was reading all replies before responding because I didn't want to echo someone elses sentiments. You said exactly what I was getting ready to write.

Not exactly, Firearm bans have been around for years and years, and yet Columbine and V.Tech STILL happened. If someone wants to kill his classmates, they sure as hell will find a way to get a gun.

And if your going to bitch about the US, take a look anywhere else, theres stupid shit in every single government on this planet, and not one country is garunteed to make you happy in every single way possible.

You really cant belive that can you? Have you ever compared americas crime statistics with a country with more strict weapon laws?

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) in 2005, 477,040 victims of violent crimes stated that they faced an offender with a firearm.

Incidents involving a firearm represented 9% of the 4.7 million violent crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault in 2005.

The FBI's Crime in the United States estimated that 66% of the 16,137 murders in 2004 were committed with firearms.

As to where for example sweden last year had a total of 240 homicides, and probably not even half of those where comited with a fire-arm.

Yeah, never mind the fact that the US's population is 33 times that of Sweden's, or the fact that other social, political, or cultural factors can come into play, probably a larger factor regarding homicide rate.

You can't just go "HAY BIGGER NUMBER" and decide that the difference is caused by what you want it to be.

That'd be almost nowhere. America has the most social problems of a first world country, Other than France.

Also, the GTFO or like it argument is rather stupid.

Yeah, never mind that broken down, america has 3.5 murders / 100.000 citizens, sweden has 2 / 100.000 (using the same 66% of the murderes comitted was using firearms, wich in swddens case is untrue). So statistically the murder-rate with firearms in america is what, 75% higher then sweden? But hay, that cant possibly have anything to do with easy fire-arm access now can it? And who cares, 75% higher is like nothing huh?

it was only a matter of time before it appeared.

Correlation does not imply causation. Once you've learned that, and brushed up on your spelling a bit, maybe there can be some intelligent discussion.

You wanna have the discussion in swedish and talk about spelling and intelligence?

Now, the actual number of swedish murders where firearms are involved are apparently 20 according to the link above. So, about 0.2 murders with firearms on a population of 100.000, compared to americas 3.5 / 100.000. Would you care to enlighten me then, if easy access to fire-arms has no part in it, what makes people use firearms in their crimes more in america?

No, this is an not a swedish message board now, is it?

To answer the question you asked, people use firearms in their violent crimes because they are available.

Now, the important part of course is the reason for the violent crimes to begin with. Population density, economic factors including distribution of wealth, proportion of socio-economic classes and government involvement with each, education... the list goes on.

Violent crime will happen with or without guns, and a ban will more than likely do little to solve the problems causing murder in the US in the first place. All you'd be doing is treating the symptoms, while ignoring the underlying problems.
