So I soloed Gration yesterday (no shield) and thought I'd write a little guide on it for anyone who wants to try. So I'm going to do this kinda Belkinator style.

What you need to know:

  • Gration has about 20,000-30,000 HP.
  • He will intimidate the shit out of you. About 1/4 of your spells will be intimidated the first time you cast it.
  • Gration has innate Regain effect, and unlike standard gigas, his TP attacks are instantaneous.
  • He uses Grand Slam. This will either take 2 shadows, 3 shadows, or if you don't have 3 shadows, all your shadows and deal a decent amount of damage to you. This will most likely break your Stoneskin and do about 400ish damage.
  • If spawned with Hickory Shield, Gration will always perform 2 Power Attacks in a row; if spawned with Picaroon's Shield, it will always perform 3 in a row. If the person with hate is out of range of a Power Attack, Gration will only chase down the person with hate until they are in melee range and will not perform any other actions, including spellcasting, until all its Power Attacks have executed.
  • It will probably go unclaimed a lot of times, so be sure to keep a DoT on it at all times.
  • MAKE SURE IT'S CLAIMED WHEN IT DIES. Otherwise, no drops for you.
  • He runs at 12% Movement Speed.
  • He casts Haste, Enthunder, Shock Spikes, Thundaga III, Thunder IV, and Burst.
  • He has limited MP.

What you want to know:

  • This will take you about 1-2 hours to do. So make sure you have time and patience to do this.
  • You don't want him to run out of MP because it makes this a lot easier.
  • You can't stop his intimidation, so deal with it.
  • Nukes work well (last Gration took the nukes like a bitch so it works well.)

What you need:

  • A NQ or HQ pop item.
  • Utsusemi
  • Time to sit on your ass for a while.

What helps:
  • Crimson Cuisses
  • Capped Bio III
  • A refresh piece of gear (Duelist Chap., Dalmy, Verm. Cloak.)

Pulling:

Buff up, pop it, and run. Once it starts casting a spell, this is your chance to get Bio/Poison on it. Be careful to not go too far ahead while pulling it to camp, it will go unclaimed. If it goes unclaimed, Bio it again and keep going. This is your route to the camp:

Fighting:

Once at camp, you pretty much just keep Poison II and Bio II/III on Gration. The more you manipulate the terrain, the easier this will be. This is my kiting path:

This will go down a little ramp, into the water with some rocks, back up a ramp, across the bridge, and loop back around to the ramp. In the process of this kiting, he will cast a couple spells. The most common spell I seen him use is Thundaga III. Make sure you run out of range of this no matter what. You can let him use Burst and Thunder IV on you, but it may be a better idea to get out of range so he keeps his MP and you keep a shadow. If you want, during the Burst and Thunder IV spell casting, you can Blizzard III him or reapply DoTs instead of running out of range. Gravity and Bind both work but starts to build a resistance to them after multiple casts so only use it in a emergency.

The difficulty of this NM would be about 2/5 if you are saying 5 is the hardest. The only problem you should have is boredom. So listen to music or talk to a friend while doing this so you won't fall asleep from the long time to kill him.

If you have any questions, comments, or think something should be added, post here.

Have fun,
JP

I believe I saw a video of this online at one point, and thought "Who really want's to do this?". Alas, JP is the winner. Cool stuff though dude.

I kinda thought that too, but I had to try it.

I thought about making a video to go along with the guide but the fight is too fucking long and my video editor is broken for some reason.

Nice effort :P I can't read for 2 hours let alone kite, I'll leave that shit to you :P

Some say he intimidates less while he is casting. Could be a scham, but who knows. Nuking does speed up the fight a good bit, but you should play it safe. He can lay the smack down on ya pretty quick if he gets too close.

Didn't make a difference when he was casting. Nuking does speed this up, but if you get intimidated while you are casting it, it can get pretty dangerous. I also need to edit in that nukes worked pretty well last time I did it.
