to think we're the only inteligent life in the universe is pure arogance.
It's not arrogance, really. The requirements for life are very scarce in the universe. Then a cataclysm has to actually occur to start it.
Of the universe, you need a planet or a moon. Consider our solar system. Of all the solid bodies in it, only two of them have the means to support life(one isn't mars, as mars had lost it's means) with only evidence of two having at one point actually having life(atleast bacterial.) So that's pretty a fairly miniscule percentage of the universe already. Remember kids, the universe is not infitessimal.
Then this planet/moon has to have, as the New Kids on the Block say, "The right stuff." A combination of things - not too far, yet not too close to the planets solar systems sun. The right combination of elements.
After that abyssmally rare happening goes through, you need the cataclysm. An event so specific, it might not even occur at all. Congratulations, you have life.
But wait, theres more. For this life to be classified as "Intelligent," it has to evolve the correct way. Evolution itself is volatile and unspecific.
