I...Don't....Know...*gulp*...
OK, in light of my recent luck, several options have been opened to me. My current plan is to have the following equipped:
Tact. Mag. Espadon
Temple Knight Shield
Happy Egg
Mythril Sallet
Medeival Collar
Mercenary Earring
Drone Earring
Cavalier's Mantle
Royal Knight's Mufflers
Mythril Leggings
Phalanx Ring
Mermaid's Ring
Warrior's Belt +1
I.M. Cuirass
I.M. Cuisses

I'm wondering if I should use maybe the I.M. Armet +1 and a verve ring instead of the mythril sallet and the phalanx ring. I guess it comes down to what's more important, defense or VIT. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Don't waste your money on VIT+ rings passed whatever lvl you can use phalanx rings. I hope the rest of QCDN can confirm this for me, but from what I have read and experienced the following:

2 VIT = 1 Defense
2 DEX = 1 Accuracy
2 STR = 1 Attack
2 AGI = 1 Evasion

So if this is true, then it would take 20 VIT to equal one phalanx ring....

Again, I do not know if this is solid real or not, but I believe it is since I have done tests:

1) Even though I have a spike necklace, I bought a fang necklace and equipped it. I found that after removing the fang necklace, my attack went down by 1. (I forgot what lvl I was, probably around lv25)
My attack was 125 with the spike necklace, 125 with the fang neclace, and 124 without any necklace equipped.

2) I did a similar test (above) with my ninja and a warrior's belt.

3) The above were the only real tests I conducted. I know that accuracy is better than dex, especially for drks and sams; for example, since it boosts their hit rate by an increadible amount. Isn't that why you see most melees (who can afford it) wearing sniper's rings instead of DEX+ rings?

if that "2 vit for 1 def" is accurate, i'd see almost every paladin that's wearing topaz rings at 73+ still weari phalanx rings instead. 10 def per ring is like 40 total vit combined. that's um... ungodly. if you're at 50, use the I.M. head, body, and legs. R.K. hands and feet. lose the cav mantle and use earth mantle. the belt, i guess, is really up to you. life belt, lv50 rse belt, or warriors +1 belt.. whichever floats your boat. i'd seriously sell that mermaid's ring tho'. i never had to use 1 in my lifetime. btw, don't get anything +1 since you're pretty much up for AF anyway.

While it is true that 2 vit = 1 defense. That's just the conversion for the actual stats. You have to take into account which is going to help more.

20 Defense, or the appropriate rings. I'll use the lvl 36 rings as I don't know what level any of that equip is. That's 6 vit AND 3 defense. Now it's true that the 20 defense on the phalanx rings > 3 defense on the +3 vit rings, but you're ignoring the benefits of VIT. Defense isn't the only stat that determines how much damage you take.

As far as which is actually better? I haven't the slightest idea. ^^

VIT lowers the curve of damage taken while also increasing defense 1 every two vit. It's hard to explain...but thats what Square sed in an interview a while back. That's why I'm having this kind of dilemma, otherwise i'd pick phalanx rings and have an end with it.

like the above poster said, VIT reduces the curve, for instance.

When im fighting an EP mob they do about 60-70 damage a swing.

However when i equip Genbu Kabuto (+15VIT)
the monster now in a much wider range.. 45-70damage. It can pretty much still do as much damage if i wasnt wearing it, but it has a chance of doing much lower.

i hope what i wrote is understandable XD

OK, besides the rings, should i get the I.M. Armet +1 or stick with the mythril sallet? Mythril Sallet= lvl 49 def 20 Iron Musketeer's Armet +1 = Level 43 def 18 vit +2 Areas Inside Your Own Nation's Control: Mp+14.

I will explain this in terms of how I understand how ACC and AGI works

AGI is the average chance for you to hit
ACC increases your chance to hit from there

So you need both for the best effect. Basically, it is a mathematical curve that you are affecting. AGI raises the whole curve. ACC plots a point higher on the curve.

So relaying that to VIT and DEF

VIT affects the average damage you take
DEF lowers maximum damage you take from there

That's just how I understand it.

AGI is ranged accuracy/evade not melee acc ^^;

as for vit. vs. def. most of the high lvl plds i know choose vit > def, when it comes to rings. Sparky explained how vit works very well. i will attempt to explain both using his example.

as he said added vit can make the range of damage larger... 60-70 dmg vs. 45-70dmg. What def does is shorten the range from the upper end, so... if he was using a high def helm instead of the Kabuto the damage range might become 60 only instead of 60-70. however, by combining good def (which most pld gear has normally other then rings) and hi vit, you maybe could have turned the dmg range from 60-70 to 45-55, because by widening the gap of dmg you allow the higher end to become less then if the damage gap is made to be smaller later on. For certain jobs, phalanx rings are > vit rings, but again, because a pld has so much natural def built into his gear and his job atributes, vit rings generally make more sense.

what would be best for you to do, if you want to make sure the combination is well ballanced, would be to buy the phalanx rings, keep your vit rings, and try them out in different combinations. it is possible that at this lvl they might do more for you, or maybe 1 phalanx and 1 vit ring would be best.... however, like i said, most plds i know, unless they have the ra/ex rings like Bomb Queen, Defending Ring and Jelly Ring, choose vit.

ok, so ditch the sallet and go for the armet +1 and get verves instead of phalanx rings. cool. I'm ditching the mermaid ring because +2 enmity just doesnt seem worth the 300k ill be throwing away on it, i can hold hate well enough without it. Thanx all for your input.

PS- Agility also decreases the amount of critical hits you take and aids in your parrying, shield, and guarding skill.

you can equip phalenx rings at 50?

at 50 you get defender from your SJ war though :)

Thanks for the input to my question answering a question

Since VIT and plain Def have their pros and cons, I would stick with +3 VIT rings until you can use Phalanx rings.

Yes there is a mathmatical equation I recently saw on Allakhazam (I know) but it looked pretty sound. The thread discussed the SE interview and such. I know its gonna look horrible but its along these lines...

Dmg taken: (Mob STR-Tank VIT) Mob Attk/Tank Def

Obviously this isnt completely accurate but I think this was the idea of it. So you dont necessarily want all Def or all VIT as the above posters have mentioned, so try for a good mix of the two. I would offer to make a link to the post but I kinda suck at that kinda stuff so good luck ^^
