Hello all i am a level 65 Red Mage, i have talked to a lot of people on my server and they all say that i am not going to be able to do it but i wish to get an opinion as to what others say. I plan on beating Maat at the ripe level of 66 and recording it what do you think? I seriously plan this and i will hopefully get 66 later tonight so i will try to keep you all informed and will post the video once i am finished.

On another note where do i get the frikin RDM test. Like the easiest drop?

Go to Temple of Uggalepith(?) and solo hover tanks for Testimonies.
They're close to where Sozu pops.

Soloing the hover tanks will give you an idea of what the Maat fight is like.
I would not suggest trying it at that level, but hey go ahead and try if you want.

Heh ok ^^ thank you a lot...eh the hover tanks are really resistant to sleep is the problem. You see in maat fight sleeping him is key for a 66 ^^ so yea but i will be sure to post the movie (win or fail) for laughs or awwws lol not like its that hard BLM solo technique lol

As a RDM that tried to kill Maat from every level from 66 to 70, I'd say wait until 70. You'll have a lot of trouble sticking sleep against Maat, and without Aero III your damage isn't that great. You can try, and I encourage you to do so, but you'll probably die and waste a lot of gil and time. Not saying you're a bad player, but usually the only ones who can beat Maat before 70 are Tarutaru's.

Good luck though~

Yea, RDM maat fight is not easy and Sleep II is a MUST.

It goes something like this:

Buff
Dispel
Sleep II
Offensive Magic III
Sleep II
Offensive Magic III
Sleep II
Bind
(potions/buffs)
...repeat(w/o the dispel).

I've seen a video of a RDM succesfully beating him at level 66, so it's very much possible. It requires a shit load of luck though.

I soloed my Testimonies off the Ruby Qadav just inside the zone to Qulun Dome. There are 3 Turtles that spawn in a small room there, and they have almost no resistence to sleep, and you have the zone at your back if things get tough.

It's good preparation for the Maat fight too... good sleep/nuke practice.

Personally I was never a fan of the sleep/nuke method cause no matter what Maat is a bitch and resists sleep like a mofo! (I tried this method at least 3 times and said screw this lol) I think the key is to a) have enough mp (a given), b) Have as much INT as possible c) make sure your elemental skill is capped or pretty damn close (to avoid as many resists as possible). and d) make sure you do the fight on your strongest spells day (i waited till level 70 so my day was windsday).

Strat:
  • Before going in equip all MP equipment (astrals, etc.), eat your food, med to full
  • Once in run like hell to the edge of the BC and sleep that mofo.
  • Drink A Yag (Dont do refresh save MP for nuking)
  • Dispel him till shell is off (if your lucky you will get there before he does any buffs or very few)
  • Bind Him
  • Stoneskin & Blink
  • Switch to INT and Nuking gear (Since you had lots of MP gear you shouldnt see too much of an MP loss when getting rdy for the battle)
  • Chainspell
  • Highest spell -> Highest spell -> Highest spell (if you have a good mp pool you might be able to do 4 spell casts instead of 3)
  • Bind or sleep him (I think i bound him to save time)
  • Use Vile Elixir +1 (or you can convert at this time your choice)
  • Blink
  • I got lucky and my 2 hour was still on so I continued to spam my highest spell till I won. (If 2 hour is up i would alternate between your bests spells).

Granted in the end it was all luck because I didnt have any resists that time and for some sheer luck I was able to keep Maat far enough away from me he couldnt Asuran Fist my ass (which btw he loves to do ... multiple times). Just one strat to consider if you are thinking of doing it at 66 because at 66 I sure as hell will bet your sleep will be resisted like a mother. Good luck :) It will be on hell of an accomplishment to beat him at that level.

That's a common strategy to us, but you don't even have to use your 2-hour really... and no potions...

Just go in on darksday (for less sleep resists), run up to the area where he stands, sleep him, dispel, and nuke.
Sleep -> nuke -> sleep -> nuke, rinse and repeat.

Once you are out of MP, just convert and cure yourself. Keep nuking -> sleeping. If you run out of MP at this point, sleep him, run 40 yards away, and /heal. Once you see him wake up, stand up and sleep him again. Then nuke him to death.

Remember:

  • Buy potions like crazy just to be well-prepared. Whatever you don't use you can sell back.
  • You are not there to beat the time record, you are there to win. Keep this in mind.
  • Don't panic, panicing more often then not makes you perform stupid misstakes.
  • Save your 2-hour for when things start going bad. That's what it's for anyway, to get you out of sticky situations.
Doing this I won on my first try, no potions nor 2-hour used. Just go in well-prepared, with a the aim to win. Not to set a time record. And remember to always stay at a 21 yard/metres (whatever FFXI goes by) distance from him every time you cast an offensive spell. This gives you enough time to resleep him before he gets time to hit you more then once.

And refresh Blink/Stoneskin/Aquaveil whenever you feel the need to do so. (Phalanx is really not needed... I didn't use it atleast)

Well when it boils down to it... Maat is about luck for RDM. Just stick with it, I won after 3 or 4 goes.

One time, I was doing picture perfect with the sleep nuke approach.
Then the old man resisted sleep, chainspelled, resisted everythin I threw at him, nuked the snot out of me, and then asuran fisted.

The time I won... (Boys and girls don't do what I did...)

Med, run in sleep him, dispel, etc. (Note I paralyzed him and it saved my butt in the end.)
Nuke, sleep
Recover a bit...
Maat wakes up... Chainspell.
Maat casts Shell...
Counter with my own chainspell.
Silence bounces.
Screw dispel... Nuke nuke nuke Nuke
Both chainspells wear off and Maat is still up.
Bound him... Ran like a ninny to the far side and used meds.
Came back and finished him off.

Who says you need to remove his shell? >.<

Anyway, as everybody said, Maat for RDM is all about keeping your cool.
Don't forget you can do debuffs like bind and such.

Good luck and bring back the good news.

If you do get lucky...

If you get really lucky, you get this ^^ I did it at 69, all my other attempts previous to that were suicide runs. I mean, I tried to win, but he beat me like a Red-Hatted stepchild.

Go Darksday, make sure you macro in your equip swaps, and bring potions. As mentioned before, you can sell back anything you don't use. Research your @ss off and make sure you have responses prepared for whatever may happen, including what to do if he resists Sleep I and Sleep II. Don't silence him either, you're more capable of taking the magic damage than having him Asuran Fist you into paste since his only option is melee if silenced.

My winning run also was not a blitz style, more of a basic buffs as soon as I zoned in (Prot and shell), stoneskin, and food. Then closed in, started with a sleep II. After that dispel until you get shell. Then start bombing your best tier III spell. I had read that some people considered stoneskin a waste of MP, but I needed all the HP I could get, he's fast for an old coot.

Miya's strategy is pretty similar to what I used, except I took about 12 Ethers with me and used 2 or 3 between each nuke (I only used 7 of them)

I got 3 regular nukes off (using Sleep and Nuke),Convert > CureIV, then chainspelled and nuke > nuke > nuke > nuke. At about the 2nd or 3rd nuke I intended to use a Vile Elixer +1 to help finish him off, but because I kept Yag drinks up and used Ethers between the first regular nukes my MP wasnt an issue.

I was also extremly lucky on this fight because he didnt resist any of my sleeps or nukes, just one bind. This fight is more based on luck than skill, you can have the best strategy in the world, and he can screw you over pretty easy if he resists just once. You have to hang in there though and dont give up cause he's just an old man.....that likes to kick face.

Good luck with your fight and I hope my rambling helped.

hehe i have my tactic which i will share when i create the movie i will be fighting him tonight or tomorrow have to get test first. lol well and i am 9k to 66 then a small 3k buffer so not much longer one good pt for a hour will do it ^^
