FAWK..and by the way, yes, Alanon, I'd be open to a pt. I'm about halfway through 61. Just grab me on-line when you can..I've been letting real life get in the way of playing lately.

A bit late to this but from my standpoint on RDM from my PLD job I can say RDM is extremely useful outside of refresh. The so called minor spells they do for DoT (damage over time) are very useful and usually have a side effect ( Dia for example) but their debuffing of the mobs is where I truly appreciate them. The RDM in my static can usually land paralyze which will cancel out a good 4-5 rounds of attacks on a IT mob. At first this may not seem like much to some of us but as a PLD or even a NIN this is very nice. From a PLD standpoint that comes to most likely 400-500 damage avioded and much mp saved and, for NIN a few shadows saved for next utsusemi cast. A other advantage of it I've seen now is the BLM sub for MB.. a RDM can hit for up too 500 on a MB with some spells.. which isn't minor damage at all . May be slightly off topic but just a point out that RDM aren't simply MP tanks, they can do other things too :D

There are 2 reasons we invite you to parties. Refresh and Dispel. This is what you can do that someone else can't do for you. If you do these two spells well a party will be quite forgiving to most other things.
Doing those two things good makes for a mediocre rdm. Doing those two good, keeping haste up, MB'ing, backup (or main) healing, and enfeebling makes for a great rdm.

If you get a drk/thf that does nothing but close sc's with SATA guillitine, you have a decent DD. Get a drk that does that, tosses in some well timed absorbs, aspirs if possible, stuns as needed, and hits a souleater before ws and drains after, then you have an invaluable party member.

There is a lot to several jobs that goes unnoticed, and very few people can appreciate how well someone is doing their job when they are doing it very nicely. All they see is the mob meeting with a quick death, and good exp. They don't realize that their accuracy was boosted noticeably by a gravity, frost, or absorb agi. They don't catch an elemental ninjitsu enfeeble corresponding with the MB that is coming after the SC. They can even miss a shield bash stopping a bomb.

They will remember getting good exp in a party with you, and even if they don't realize how much you were really contributing, they will still remember you as being good at your job. They will definately remember getting bad exp in a party where you did a terrible job of all the noticeable things.

The Passion of RDM

My job is both my pride and my pet peeve.

It's my pride because I love what I do. In an XP party anything less then perfection out of myself is a failure. Enfeebles have to be on. Refresh has to be in place; a BRD can AoE Refresh, RDM have to simulate that by slapping it one ASAP when its worn off. Nukes have to rival a BLM's, it doesn't matter that I'm Elvaan. I'm only happy when my MP is low but everyone else's is ticking up and their HP in the white. True that our mainstay is Dispel and Refresh, but if that's all you're looking for in an RDM you're missing out.

Melee is a seperate issue. If you can do your job right and add DoT damage at the same time then do so. But if it interferes with your true duties then you have no right to swing a sword in xp.

Which brings me to the pet peeve part. I was unwilling to accept it at first but the fact remains that a vast majority of RDMs are horrible. Melee gets lumped together with these because they like to do that and ignore their responbilities. It makes me sick that some no talent ass clown makes it 50+ without Dispel and a /NIN sub purely because of his Refreshing ability. I wish Refresh and Phalanx traded gil values, Phalanx being the low-cost one. Hell, a part of me wishes Refresh was 300k just so that every jerk off without a clue couldn't breeze through riding the RDM gravy train.

I saw a lvl 70 RDM in Bibiki with a /NIN sub. I was halfway tempted to ride out there and watch him. I was genuinely interested to see if A. He was meleeing B. If they were chaining quickly and if not C. which 5 people would put up with this crap at level 70. I'm not going to name names; if you read this /tell me in game. I wanna hear it.

There isn't anything you can do to try to change people's minds. That's what is so frustrating every time you see a RDM/some gawd awful sub, it would take hours to give them every bit of know-how you have. And that's if they even want to listen to you in the first place.

Am I alone? Does anyone else give two gil as to what other RDMs are doing and our reputation?

Random responses:

Links - its an RDM's job higher up. Period. Early on a BLM can handle it fine. But when their Enfeeble skill rating begins to show and become uncapped, it really belongs to the red. Besides, even if everything goes smoothly and its asleep, when it wakes up would you rather have the mob going after RDM or BLM? I'd rather it be double attacking me then a BLM (a vast majority of which are Taru) that it can turn into pink pudding.

Sinhard - This is nature of our job. We're doing our best when the PT hardly knows we're there. That's the way I want it, I want people concentrating on their jobs 100% and not mine. As a sidenote, a RDM/WHM can MB just as well as a /BLM, they'll just have to add more INT to make up for the sub loss.

LVL Cap: Yes, that statement does have truth in it. Obviously it wouldn't affect most of the game but sadly I can easily see the entire backline subbing RDM for Refresh, delegating the enfeebles among the WHM and BLM and effectively terminating our job.

Goddamn. Now I'm done.

What's the point of this job if not for the refresh? I just got out of a pt where we had some asshole named SMG as our rdm. Wer'e fighting a goblin mercenary and I'm getting my ass handed to me. I asked for refresh 4 times, and he did not cast it. on anyone. Instead, he's meleeing. Well, both the healer and I died. I'm a pld, and quite frankly i cannot hold hate without some help from magic, whether its cures or flashes. Afterwards, he tries to convince the whole pt that he was refreshing, and that it wasnt his fault that we died. I mean WTF? The reason the healer dies was because she was /heal herself due to the lack of mp. Anyway, theres #4 on my blacklist. Anyone else in that pt, if i forgot anything please feel free to add.
I've partied with this guy a few times, and he was stingy as fucking hell with refresh. For a while he would refresh himself, the pld, and the blm, then rest. Well, okay, I thought. Soon he just starts refreshing himself. Me and the blm start kindly requesting refresh, and he says "I give when needed." Yeah. He's a bastard.

It is a shame when you see a bad reputation coming to a job because of poor experiences in the past with other players of the same job. But this holds true of many jobs still... it just happens RDM is a job that if isn't played well is noticed easier than some other jobs possibly. An excellent RDM is rare, but when you do happen to come across a good RDM it's also noticed as easy.
As a side note for Zura - I haven't seen RDM MB with WHM sub all that much really, so I didn't mean to make it seem worthless. I party with a RDM/BLM so I was trying to look at it from experience with that RDM :D

I was a RDM/WHM, I've had people congratulate me for taking it was far as I did, and I've been asked why? When I MB'd it was a joke. Maybe 300 if I can remember on a distortion or that other one with water/ ice. I've MB'd for 0 more than once. People didn't really care, because of a WHM sub. I had all of my elemental spells, just for the laugh I guess. What a RDM does in a party, is based on the subjob. Me I didn't mind backup healing instead of nuking now and again, a RDM with a BLM sub would be the opposite, would rather nuke than backup heal. At lower levels I was loved, because a RDM/WHM could main heal better than a RDM/BLM just because of the cobination. As I got higher up in level (50+) main healing became harder, because my job became more diverse. I couldn't enfeeb, heal, enhance, and do everything, unless you wanted me to 2 hour, and that only lasts for 30seconds.

But I think this entire thread, kind of got slightly off topic. Read the title.

"Redmages that don't refresh." If they dont refresh:kick them(shin, balls, boobies, out of the party, kick them).

My two cents

A rdm/blm has more enfeebles.... but a rdm/whm enfeebles stick more (because of the higher mnd). Its personal preference they each have there pros and cons but the bottom line is any other sub (i.e. /nin) is not worth inviting unless your confident in the players skill.

Well, I think RDM/NIN is all based on the party set up. If it's say a 4 person party where they fight things that are weak enough, for 4 people to kill, and gives decent xp and they have a WHM, PLD, SMN, RDM... Your going to want another DD, and some RDM/NIN can deliever "ok" damage, compared to the other. But if your level 70 RDM/NIN that's not acceptable, unless under the correct circumstances.

Enfeebling, Enhancing, Support. Refresh is a part of our Enhancing Arsenal, but it is not our only duty.

Well put Pascal. <3

People forget about what our enfeebs do - and constantly bitch about Refresh and Dispel <---often seconds AFTER you have already cast it.

Do us a favor, before you spam <Refresh, Please> look at the damned chat log - you SHOULD be able to read what spells your own party members have cast. If you have that filtered, then you are an idiot.
this is why I became a BLM/RDM to cut out the need for RDM's that can't do there job >_< because there are far far far too many of them! it pays off right from the begining, sure I get all my cures later than a /WHM but a /WHM never gets cure 4 and niether do I, I will cast escape faster than a /WHM and I will regen my MP faster than a /WHM because of my job traits and my higher INT is even better because I almost never get reisted, ever seen someone burst Flood on an IT robber crab for 1100 DMG I have, call me lucky if you wish I call it my RDM sub! and at 64 it makes it all the better because I can dispel, and we can have a bard and 2 BLM and no need for a RDM at all, I'm not nocking RDM I know there are great ones and there are ones thatshould delete their chars, just exsperienced too many of the bad ones. Also I will take a bad BRD over a good RDM any day. (before you RDM flip about this comment I said good RDM not Great RDM so before you take offense to this relize you are admitting you suck at your job by flipping a bitch at this comment!)

You're doing WHAT? Tell me you're only doing enfeebles other than Dia II when there is not rdm.

Enfeebling skill cap:

Lvl 60rdm/30blm = 203 (A+)
Lvl 60blm/30whm = 190 (C+)
Lvl 60whm/30blm = 190 (C)

Without any enhancing gear? Hmm..not bad...

And as far as being a refresh pimp?

OF COURSE RDM should cast it..all the time..as soon as it wears.

NO ONE is saying that. But to say that's ALL we're good for..is ignorant.
um you left out lvl 60 BLM/RDM enfeebling capped at 193

RDM is my highest job, so I try to do it at the best of my abilities...

1st. Refreshing: Allways try to have it on at all times to all mages! I do my cycle depending on how mages show up on my screen, party list.

2md. Enfeebs:
Slow (mob hits less=less dmg)
Paralize (mob cant hit=less dmg)
Gravity (mob cant evade as well=more dmg to mob)
Dia/Poison/Bio (Depends if theres a BLM and type of mob)

3rd. Magic burst
I dont do much of this cause I use WHM as sub, but allways willing to if theres no BLM. I dont however just do random elemental magic cause its nor really worth it, I'm not doing much damage might as well use my MP for other things like...

4th. Back up Healing
I see yellow, I cure, nuf said.

This is basically how I group, my personal style, and I have fun! (If I recall this was still a game). One thing that bugs me is that some people would group without a WHM, and go on with 2 RDM. Personally I dont like to do this because it just seems too desperate, not that it cant work I have done it a few times before, but its allways just beeter to have a proper set-up to kickass.

Another thing... I do feel sorry for RDM's who dont do their job, however...
Instead of just telling everyone "This freaking guy sucks dont PT with him!" why dont you try and help this person so that he/she may turn into a viable member in the group. But as we all know some people are stubbern and cant handdle constructive critisism, at this time you may add them to your blacklist and put them on the flameboard ^^

My very long 2 gil.
