Refresh rate

I had to re-install FFXI on my PC. Does anyone know where the config file (text file) is to change the refresh rate in the game?

I know there's a 29 fps cap on the game, but I didn't know about any way to change the refresh rate.

isn't the cap 30? But yeah, I didn't know there were a way to increase it. I know you can improve everything else, though.

If there was a way to improve the FPS, the PC version wouldn't suck as bad graphically. I just remember SE said they put it in so that the PS2 players wouldn't be at a disadvantage; they need to just cut that off like the rotting limb it is.

Before I go on a long song and dance about how to fix what I think you've got, first thing is whether or not you've gotten the terms refresh rate and fps (frames per second) confused. As the previous posts have mentioned, the game is capped at 30 fps, hard-coded in if I remember right. While "refresh rate" on the other hand deals with the actual timing of your monitor, if you've a CRT that is (LCD screens have a different term, called response times, but that's irreverent to this post). You might be familiar with the "flickering" of CRT tubes. That would be the refresh rate. (aaand, if you feel like it, wiki on refresh rate.) If you're playing FFXI at a different screen resolution than your desktop, there's a chance Windows has defaulted to 60Hz, which, to me, gives me a blinding headache/migraine in a matter of minutes. There are ways to fix that, but it's late, and I'd rather not explain how if it's not needed (what can I say, I'm tired, and lazy).

So, do you mean "refresh rate", or did you confuse it with fps for FFXI?

Max is like 29.9 FPS you can go above 30+ if you did not have lag spike (i think)

There is no config to set FPS limit in your game, if your game run below 20FPS you need a new graphic card with better processing clock/speed.

Sorry all, I should have been more clear. There is some configuration file you can edit to change the resolution of how you play FFXI on your PC. I know you can do that through Program Files>PlayOnline>SquareExix>FFXI>FFXI Config, but I remember when the game 1st came out, you can edit a file with notepad to change the resolution. And if I recall, the refresh rate (Hertz) was in there too.

As for my FFX Configs(and forgive me, I'm at work and trying to remember at the top of my head):

1. I enabled Bit Mapping
2. Ran background uncompressed
3. Background resolution is set to 1024 x 768
4. Character movement set to SMOOTH

I still see the flickering (refresh rate) which is giving me a bit of a headache.

Any other suggestions I can do?

what graphic card you're using?

if it low end, Background resolution maybe too high for you

VGA ASUS Radeon EAX800/2DTV/256MB

It was working fine before my brother-in-law hosed my system. I had to reload the OS and other applications.

You may want to update the driver, cuz your Radeon should be working smoothy for FFXI

FFXI have a history on not working on some of the older driver and graphic card
i had a issue with FFXI too (make ever NPC/Player/Mob flickering almost everytime camera angel is moved).

Other then that, you may have something in your background is eating up your mem and graphic usage

*edit* Learn something new every day. The older LCD is being recognized as a CRT by windows. That explains a lot. The brand new 22" is recognized as an LCD, which is why the refresh on it doesn't matter. Cool.

To those wondering wtf I'm talking about, I had asked a silly question about a capped refresh on my new 22" Chi Mei Flat Panel. Slapped my forehead after that, so I'll save you the effort.

Argg, I had a nice proper thread typed up, and closed Firefox by mistake. Fuck.

K, I was going to go into a nice explanation about refresh rates and screen resolutions, but screw it, I'll cut to the chase. All you need to properly lock your 1024x764 FFXI window to whatever refresh rate you want (and your CRT can support :P ) is RefreshForce: Link to site. Find the download link, download it. Unzip it into a folder located wherever you want on your PC (I recommend a folder called RefreshForce on your C: drive, easy to find). Run the .exe, open the help file, follow the instructions, make your changes, and you should be good to go. Want to uninstall it? Delete the files. Easy enough eh? If this doesn't do it, then I don't know what to tell you. And sorry for the really late reply, I've had a long 50h+ week, and slept all Saturday.
