I'm not typically one to up and ask about things like this, and I know there are many ways to make gil. However, I'm always curious as to how many other people get their supply of gil (in a general sense, not exact things sold or done).
The reason for me asking is because ever since I began playing, I have always had trouble having much gil - for example, I tend to have around 20k gil on me on average now and my highest levels are WHM70 and DRG51. If I'm ever able to get a hold of enough gil to upgrade my equipment, I do so as soon as possible in fear of prices hiking up.
As a result, though I have some good equipment right now and can (sometimes) afford to buy decent food, I am still behind on equipment that I feel is necessary and/or enhances the jobs I play to a degree with which I am satisfied.
Currently, I am more of a 'farmer' than anything else because that's what I learned initially to do to make gil. I have tried BCNMs in the past and have had absolutely horrid luck on them (except one, which was Wild Whiskers - even then, had really bad drops). And I have attempted camping NMs at the suggestion of a friend - that ended not so well due to bots (some non-RMT) and RMT. Also, have tried to start doing crafting but due to lack of gil and time to do so, that has halted for the most part. All in all, I'm always on the move and never really stick around inside of towns for more than 20 min or so when I'm looking for party. If I'm not seeking, I'm out doing something productive.
I implore you not to insult me for asking about this, since this has been a consistent annoyance since the beginning for me. All I ask for is a little advice from the people who know what they are doing - basically, most end-game people since that what I'm getting close to myself. I appreciate the advice.

P.S.: Any negative comments/complaints/insults will be dealt with accordingly. I do not want to be insulted or anything - if you can't say anything positive or neutral, then please do not say anything at all nor rate against me for this. I'm just trying to get by in the game with what time I have available to me.

Well... my summary of farming is go outside and kill crap. Most of my jobs atm I pay for by killing stuff while lfp.
Being inside whitegate while doing absolutely nothing serves no purpose towards anything on your character except for statue impersonations.

Teletaxi, or join a nice HNM shell who'll buy you a noble's and who pay out active members due to the events they participate.

Gil for a WHM is pretty stiff, and it's quite hard to make. However, there's nothing stopping you from grabbing a club and bashing some Leeches or Crawlers for blood or silk (respectively). Maybe even goobbues, if you can stand having competition 24/7.

if you want gil stop bcnm, they are waste of time. Go farm instead. I bought my airship pass 3 weaks after starting the game, i was rdm 23 no SJ and i made 500k in one week, with an economy comparable as the one of today. What i did is kill bees, harvest, kill crawlers ..

Playing the market is the way I made my fortune. I have 72 Smithing that I leveled to help make gil of course. Heres the catch though. I noticed that DS stack of ingots were worth a fuck tonne 2 Xmas ago due to that huge inflation from people buying gil. DS Ingots went from 300-450k a stack to a high of 1.2M a stack. Needless to say me and a buddy of mine stayed in Gusgen and milked that for a month straight.

Sure it was mind melting and frustrating as hell with RMT mining on top of you. It was all worth it in the end though, combined we made roughly 58 stacks of ingots over that month.....you do the math. I haven't farmed since lol.

Moral of the story find something and expliot the shit out of it. Even if you don't have a craft leveled you must know someone who does. Farm the raw mats and then have them craft them into something that's worth more. When I was a newbie 50 PLD I would farm Korroloka for Oil and socks. Then get Mariox to split the socks into wool thread. Mariox is a long time friend from a previous MMO we played together so he did the work for free for me. It helped me get established in the game and I took that money and invested it in good gear and the left overs into a craft so I one day could become independant and make my own gil.

I agree with Khajit that make the most of your time, as a DRK when I was LFP I would either mine in gusgen for DS or kill Goobs for tree cuttings to make the time of LFP pass and accomplish something at the same time. Times have changed massivly and I know that we are at an huge lul, hell I was going to go fram goobs last night but saw that a stack of cuttins is now 30k.

Personally I think you should scour the AH for stuff that sells at a fast rate for a decent price and if you dont have the craft for it find someone who does and offer them commission for thier work and make your money that way. Worked for me.

Another thing to do is ISNM. Theyre actually pretty easy to do but finding people for em is the challenge. the isnm60 has a return of about 60-80k per run minimum IMO gilwise vs the the 20k you woul make from the gold coins.

Also learn how to save. Everything your whm essentially has/wants to get is going to be used in endgame at this stage.
Learn to prioritize what gear has the best improvment/cost ratio.
take for example amemit+1 vs bomb core.
Which seems smarter?
Paying 200-300k for 5 more atk(over Nq) or paying 100k for 12 more atk?
Dont buy an item solely based on epeen. Buy it based on what it can do for you.
If you can try to steer your parties towards areas that give a profit. With the advent of TAU this doesnt reeally work anymore but when the AC is gone you can steer people to ugg range and lufaise meadows for parties that can earn you over 100k in gil just from partying if done right.

actually...I like to expand on this

this is actually a good way to make gil unlock a job lv it, but buy your armor cheap.

I am currently doing this for my nin/war/drk i just go to npc shops and buy your basic lv1 armor gear for 100~200 gil each(so yes it requires investment)

lv it past a certain point when you go to buy upgrades make sure the gear that you're buying is usuable by all jobs sell it to ah for its current price(Read: more than what the npcs sell it for)

lather rinse and repeat until you get into higher lvs around 30 ish? not much more back but it definitely adds up.

for more profit just use one job at a time sell the gear back then get another lv 1 job and start over.

i can clarify if that doesnt make much sense i'm a bit vague at times

Bubbly Bernie: steam clocks. I know at first you may say, "Necro, I don't see how this can be profitable for me." Well I assure you, there is much room for growing in a steam clock-oriented business, as there is little to no competition besides the pesky Chinese goldfarmers. In short, here is my secret to becoming the multimillionaire player I am today.

if you want gil stop bcnm, they are waste of time.

Only if you're an idiot and spam the non-profitable ones that only have one big pay out. Anything with a high deman crafting item(KSNM30s) is going to turn out decent money, except in rare occasions when loot randomizer sticks it to you.

ODS isn't done just because of Serket Ring/V. Claw. D. Ingots and Cloths are still decent scratch. While you can walk away with nothing worthwhile, you usually score atleast one of those four items.

Why the hell would you even waste gil on an airship pass. Hopefully you get banned the next time SE cleans up RMT.

Join a band of happy-go-lucky RMT, and they will supply you with 1337wear...Money will appear as only an illusion when you are wearing your shiny new Assault Jerkin.

Its not a waste since it takes very short time to get and is very useful. I did the same as pchan, thf 25/whm7 rank2 got airshit pass, didnt bother farm khazam shit pass.

ksnm30 I did like 10 and got only 1 time something worth it. I use my beastmen seals on the stupid coffer one in giddeus, got 2 Sorcerer ring out of 1000 seals, not bad.

If you consider the time it takes to gather people to do, say, pcc or ks30s ODS, its usually not worth the time. farming yields me 50k/h minimum. harvesting is 100k/hour and chocobo diging 150k/h, with today's economy.

Check what the prices are now but if darksteel ore is still selling well, and you can stand to do it, go mine!

Edit:

To expound:

At one point in time I was wondering how true it was when people said it was too hard to make money in this game and that I wouldn't understand since I benefited from starting the game "at the beginning". I created a little Taru named Yaka. I started him in Bastok and proceeded to level every basic 6 jobs to level 10. I sold all the drops (minus turning in zinc ore and soot) and the bit of money that netted me I bought some pick axes.

At this point I just mined my taru butt off. I also would buy stacks of fire crystals and make ingots to skillup Smithing. Dark ore I just sold individually. Now I actually like mining, call me crazy, but after putting in ~6 hours every night (weekends probably longer than 6 hours) I had made a little over a million gil in about a week. Not only had I made the gil but my smithing was now leveled to 30 (iron chain) and I had full field gear. Not bad being a level 10, no sub job, rank 2 character. Granted I think I came at this with a little more knowledge than a new player would have and also expecting a new player to immediately start grinding like that is probably excessive, it was possible.

Since then I know the gil depression occurred so it would take longer but I am sure that it is still a viable if you can stand to do it. I've had real life friends try it and they were bored out of their skulls.

Edit 2: Oh god. I just checked ffxiah.com and it says chunks of darksteel ore go for an average of 5,500 gil a piece now. When I did this the ore went for 28-30k a piece.
