Today, 8 May 2006, a part of QCDN was taken away from the users.

This part has been a topic of both admiration and hatred since the beginning of QCDN. It has turned squabbles into full-scale wars, turned users into heroes and villains simultaneously, and shown the Internet both the best and the worst of our server.

As of today, Sculli would like to continue on with QCDN as though the Flameboard never existed. Lock it, delete it, pretend a 'kinder, gentler' QCDN will bring an age of enlightenment to this board. Over 2400 threads and nearly 110,000 posts stored away like the Ark in Raiders. Many feel this will be a new era for this board.

I agree with this as well - but not in a positive sense. For better or worse, the Flameboard showed us the pulse of our server and gave QCDN the majority of its content. Not only content, but unique, focused content where you never knew what would be posted the next time you hit F5. Careers were both made and destroyed on that board, and that was part of its eternal charm.

With the Flameboard gone, what does QCDN offer the general member? Going forum-by-forum, aside from the circle of posters being smaller than any 'general' FFXI board, the boards are, to put it simply, nothing that can't be found elsewhere. I'll leave out the new forums for now, give them a chance.

General Discussion? Alla's main forum with just QCDN members responding, scattered with random "Should I quit" threads.

Event Scheduling? Perhaps the only real server-based thread left, with (in my experience using the board) poor results compared to simply using the /shout feature in Jeuno.

Good Times? With the "Thanks" feature added, we may as well obliterate this forum as well. Countless ego-stroking posts with no real content aside from fishing for 'congrats!' and 'gj d00d!' And yes, I'm guilty of using the forum for that myself - but that doesn't mean its content is at all worthwhile or necessary.

Auctionhouse? Again, some decent server-based postings, but discussion-free for the most part, mentioning that a price is too high/low is frowned upon, and countless threads disappear without as much as a reply, defeating the purpose of the person posting in the first place OR PC+1ing their thread to keep it up at the top of the board.

Crafter's Corner? Aside from perhaps 10 or so members of this forum with some pretty experienced and unique views on crafting, there's nothing on that board that isn't found better/more in-depth on multiple other forums.

Traveller's Tavern? 73 threads in two+ years kind of speaks for itself. (I actually went back and edited this thread in, as I had honestly forgotten it existed.)

LS Recruiting? See Auctionhouse, but with linkpearls instead of items.

Quests/Missions/Guides? Once again, less information than the general boards.

Fan Works? I'll talk about this forum once I actually have interest in viewing it - give me a day or 2.

Off-Topic/RSI? Only really good if you want your views on the world to come from the people who Refresh you, I guess.

It doesn't really take too much thought to realize that the Flameboard, love it or hate it, was the goldmine of content that drew people to the site. General Discussion has around 30,000 posts to go to catch up to the now-dead forum. Some may say "Yeah, that's only because everyone post-spammed the Flameboard!" and you have some merit there.

Let me draw some parallels to another forum I love - the Something Awful forums. While there are a lot of differences (the most glaring being the $10 barrier of entry to SA) people flock to both here and the Awful Forums for one main reason:

Content.

Content you're not going to find anywhere else. And while each forum has its general boards that have the same threads you'll find at every other board out there, and the same (if not stricter) level of moderation, they each had a hook. Something that people would both love and hate, and would drive people to the site.

SA has FYAD. To ensure this post doesn't get locked for 'community standards' guidelines, I have no intention of spelling out what FYAD stands for (though you can likely figure it out given enough time.) To me, the Flameboard reminded me a lot of FYAD. A lot of 'worthless' posts, its own brand of fun and humor, and occasionally something that just clicks.

And like FYAD, the Flameboard was never for the faint of heart. Going in there without lurking and understanding the board is a fast track to getting mocked and humiliated. For a long time, I felt this was understood among the posters of QCDN, and (like FYAD) the simplest way to avoid having issues with the Flameboard was to simply not read it.

This has obviously proven impossible, and the solution that presented itself was to cater to those who feel the Flameboard is an affront to the server.

In its place has popped up a 'watch list' where posting outside opinions are very likely going to be impossible. The forum's 'charm,' again, for better or worse, has been destroyed. Instead, we enter an era where feelings are not to be hurt, players are not to be harassed (and according to the guidelines, criticized) and an overall feeling of sterility has washed over the board.

The failings of users who prefer their forum experience to be as inoffensive and PC as possible have influenced the forum to a degree where those who have the ability to moderate themselves and enjoy the atmosphere of the Flameboard have that which they have grown to love on this board taken away without so much as a vote. I understand that we as a QCDN community (some as former mods, though if my services are needed again I feel I can be of use to the board) have no say in how Sculli runs this forum. We lose those rights the moment we agree to have user accounts.

However.

Even in Sculli's PM to all mods revoking their status said the forum would experience a downturn in traffic. Perhaps this was the idea behind removing the board. I personally disagree with the reasons put behind the Flameboard's departure and I know no number of postings will change Sculli's mind on this. He, and those he has listened to, have spoken, and we must all accept that decision and move on.

But don't forget. The Flameboard was what brought me to this forum (and was, if I remember right, my second post here.) I'm sure many of you came due to the FB. Maybe you stayed for another board. Maybe you're leaving because it's gone. Maybe you'll skate the thin line between flame and discussion and keep posting in GD. Maybe you won't, and you'll be banned.

In the end, the Flameboard was a roaring success. It was what it was supposed to be, and never really tried to be anything more. It may have taken on a life of its own at times, and it gave me and countless others hours of entertainment on an otherwise dull board.

Will QCDN ever be the same? We'll see.

(Note: Those disagreeing with this post will be promptly reported to the admin under the "Harassment" guidelines posted in the QCDN Community Standards.)

This is kinda like a novel. Nice post.

I din't really like the Flameboard, but it defininately had some good threads that I did read. I must admit, I will also miss it.

yes, i will miss it too- qcdn seems emptier to me now. It feels like i have to be careful of what i post now. Luckily i can still say whatever the {insert swear word here} i want to in the pimps forum.

As much as the flameboard was just turning into bicker scabbling about crap before its demise, the flameboard did serve its purpose... people like to fight. It's in our nature to put up our dukes and scuabble. HELL, majority of us wouldn't be living in Amerca if it wasn't for fighting. I know theres the "trolls" in the flameboard and just wanted to fight no matter what... but then again isn't that what the flameboard was made for? I don't think it was created to talk about family BBQs we have been to lately... It was made to bicker and bitch. Without nowhere to vent some anger, will just vent it somewhere and los of people will be banned and QCDN is going to turn into some Nazi camp in the end. Only the noncussing, nonfoulmouthed allowed. Truly, those people is what makes reading, watching a movie fun. Whenever you watch a move, your favorite actor is the loud mouth funny asshole (Homer), not the self rightous adorer (Flanders). Its just common sence to let people blab about stupid shit in one general forum, yes I understand they brought it to other forums anyways but proves my point more, people like to argue. The world wasn't made to be all lovey dovey, without war and violence we wouldn't have some our most important historical sites, memories, heros. In closing, even though was Scullis decsion as the owner of QCDN, and we should respect it, I just hope it was the right one 'cause as I stated before people are meant to fight. Sorry for the long post and I'm sure lots of grammatical eras-Had to drop outta college 'cause couldn't pass English 'cause my paragraphing, punctuaction sucks nuts, sue me but just had to get that out.

My girlfriend brought up a good point - think of the Flameboard as Quetzalcoatl's version of Reality TV and you'll understand why it was so loved and viewed. For lack of a better quote, it's fun to watch rich people be naughty.

THANKS!

I am glad I dropped my Mod duties prior to this. Seeing the coming trend, I took pleasure in letting my "duty" go. Mod decisions had been ultimately overruled by Admin decisions several times...As has general comminity sentiment.

I think the removal of the FB is less likely a detriment to this board than the numbing, PC, peach-fuzziness it strives for. If what comes natural is often critiqued or has to be second guessed, then a would-be poster won't bother. Although, the FB was the FB...Yeah it was harsh, as many people have mentioned, but then again, you did know what you were getting into, so, to flame, you're a dumb ass for complaining about the harshness of the flame board. Jeeeeeezus.

If this forum seeks to be more of a "resource", then it will be used as a resource...Meaning, people will come to seek information and leave. The discussion part of discussion forum will take a hit and traffic will slow.

For me, this is probably a blessing in disguise. I won't be here chit-chatting in various forums as much...Which may still be more than some people, but for me, it'll be less for sure. lol

Bottom Line: Other "resources" do it better. Other "discussion forums" do it better. This site is taking a back seat now.

i gave you the thumbs up, 's all that needs to be said. except that.. and that. >.> and that

I think that sums up just about everybody's feelings on the flameboard deletion. Well, those who didn't want it to be deleted, anyway.

/em lights a candle for the flameboard

I for one will miss the FB. It was how I first heard about QCDN, and stayed the first board I checked when I came here. As I've said it was like my own guilty pleasure web soap opera. I don't see what the whole fuss was about. I mean when you get down to it, It was just a message board for an online game. Not exactly like if you were running for office and the press dug up that you posted on the QCDN flameboard it would derail your campaign. People just need to learn to laugh at themselves, and have fun again.

May it rest in pieces. A truly entertaining board to the last. It will be missed.

QFTMFT! rate cubs UP!

The reason I liked the Flameboard is that there was some designated place for these types of posts. Most successful message boards have some place where users know they can go to post what others might consider "offensive" or "controversial". The most important thing about these boards is that they keep all of these controversial posts in one place, rather than letting them pour out into every other forum.

How many posts have you seen on General Discussion where at some point someone posts "Take it to the flameboard, guys"? What's going to happen to these topics now? There's nowhere for them to go really other than to just leave them on General Discussion. Now without one board for these types of topics we can just expect to see them on all of the forums.

Are we going to just have to accept people taking pot-shots at each other on the Goods Times board now that they can't create a flame on the Flameboard? Will events get cancelled when topics on that board get crapped to death by people who feel they were wronged by the topic creator? I guess only time will tell.

Sculli does have an answer to this oft-repeated criticism, and it's something along the lines of "I'll delete it all, and ban where I have to."

Of course, that only leads to the next logical line of criticism: "That's not going to work as well as you seem to think it will." I'm inclined to agree with that, particularly with a few of the mods disarmed.

What's more, it will require the exile of otherwise incredibly helpful members for piddly, meager offenses. The forum without flames is non-existent: you'll eventually whittle yourself down to bones, even if your member base is populated by passive wittul bunnies.

Well, already testing this policy over in Crafters Corner - http://www.qcdn.org/showthread.php?t=26706

Flame-ish by me, at Elemmire, but with plenty of logic behind it. Deleted, banned, or nothing at all? Only time will tell.

I'm sorry but I think the FB has become a waste of space over the last half year - year or so. Honestly the last good flame that served a purpose I saw was the one at NAFireblade. It was brought up, resolved and everyone walked away happy, both sides manged to control themselves and refrain from throwing out the what seems to be common "you're an idiot" response.

I've watched the flameboard almost destroy the entire forum when Pup was MIA, people were getting ready to leave and create new community boards because the stink from the FB was penetrating in even Good times. It's a blemish on the face of the community and contrary to popular belief, QCDN didn't get popular because of the flameboad. I've been here since damn near the begining and the FB wasn't even touched for the longest time. It was a really positive environment with OMG!! Great content!

The flameboard doesn't promote great discussion, it promotes pissing contests, dick measuring contests, racism and tends to destroy what could possibly be great heated debates, turning them into "Lol" picture posts and responses that go nowhere.

We all have greifs/beefs with the game but I'd like to see them presented with actual content that leaves room for discussion, debate and yes, even resolution. The flameboard was reminding me of those people who have 50 million problems and have a mighty need to tell them to you all the time, stewing in them but not actually taking the time/effort to resolve them.

I"m all for great back and forth debate and the flameboard left no room for that.

Anyway, great post Cubs!

D'oh! Now you've blown your cover. We won't know the true intent behind whatever is done with it now.

Would be poster with an opinion and a right mind to speak it:
"Hmmm, this place is friggin' chamomile, plain white toast, boring. I'll use another resource or discussion forum that's more interesting."

Not everything needs to be cold, calculated, and/or logical. I mean, that could be a recipe for success, but it's surely a recipe for boring.

People knw what the FB is about, yet go there and get their feelings hurt. Then the FB is taken away from people who can handle it (the majority of us)...Just another case of a handful of whiners getting their way, and a leader with their own agenda catering to this "need", and using it to pursue their own interests, wiping community interest under the rug.

Why the troublemakers were not dealt with individually, I'm not sure. Why the whiners were given any attention, makes zero sense. The answer to, "I got my feelings hurt in the FB" is, "Surf at own risk." The whiners got their way. Thing is, they should have nothing to whine about, and will become bored, as complaining about flamers was their entire pathetic existence. Muah.

j/k...kinda

While I will not really miss the flameboard (too Jerry Springer for me), I will light a candle that it hasn't been preserved for posterity's sake. Most of it was complete garbage, but some of it did illuminate and educate.

I think the people that didn't want the FB to be deleted, or at least preferred something a little less "my way or the highway", would agree that you can have good debate in ANY other forum. Flames should be kept to the FB. The Mods of the other various forums should have done a better job of taking care of flames in non-FB forums. Voila! Everyone's happy.
