Rainbow 6 though was on the 360 back then, quietly being the best online console game while people jerked off the Gears of War.
As for large battles.. Warhawk does 32 pretty well, but I agree Resistance with 40 is a clusterfuck. Just remember you don't actually have to play those big 40 player matches. It's mostly just fun to me for nonteam deathmatch. Go around killing and dying every few seconds. No depth but cheap thrills.
It needs good net code but after Resistance that's obviously going to happen.
As for the rest, no guarantees but I'm cautiously optimistic. The best part of Resistance to me was the offline, but campaign is always most important to me. Just like with Halo, if the offline is good then I'm happy. Warhawk is the only game good enough to be a winner on it's online alone for any console, but they should have made an offline with bots like Unreal Tournament or Star wars battlefront.
Deleted some of your quote so i can answer directly Fire. Rainbow is exactly the game i was talking about from that time period. GeoW at that point was just so "Cool" in peoples mind that it had to be the best online then lol. It was not for me. Warhawk does great with larger scale battles but its also heavy heavy focused on vehicles and the strategy is not so deep. Appreciate your view on resistances 40 man matches, i know now i am not alone there. And sure i can admit i lean a little hard on the game because of that, again as you said the lower body count matches worked well on some maps. Resistance online as far as connectivity goes was great, i bring it up to this day on live Fire. I honestly do, "Why dont we get dedicated servers for a game like Halo and CoD where 2+ million people are online at all times a day, even resistance had them." I argue that point and will be very happy if Resistance2 follows that direction. For me this gen so far with shooters, as far as campaign go its Resistance and Halo3 then others come after. Resistance being the longer i guess you can say the campaign was more bang for the buck.
Also have any of you checked out that FPS coming out Frontlines??? The graphics blow but please check gametrailers.com and see some of the directions this game is taking. I caould be a major sleeper.
