Started as a mere short story that was spawned from a silly question of "if a platoon of Marines was sent back in time who would win? Them or the Roman Empire" and it got REALLY popular. So now apparently gonna be made into a movie :D of the short story, only the first 10 days are posted

And it's neat. I love the concept and the fact the guy is a bit of a historian himself he has actual real senators in the story and it takes place in 23 B.C. when Augustus was trying to deal with a conspiracy leads to a very interesting dynamic. Even more interesting is that these are marines from Afghanistan so they have 2,200 Marines, 150 Air men, 15 civilians, and 60 Afghan Soldiers (liasons and translators and such). Think about that. 60 people who worship a religion not even introduced to the world yet. That dynamic is unexplored atm but could be really cool.

Also the fact that the living conditions are so vastly different back then than now but the Afghan soldiers would know how to make due better in such conditions than the US Soldiers once the supplies run out and, well, ya. I just really like the concept and while the pacing of the short story is a bit too quick, considering it was just started during the guy's lunch break it's really cool.

Can't wait for the movie :D

why the hell would the marines take afghan soldiers? so the afghan soldiers can shoot the marines in the back as soon as the opportunity presents itself?

and why marines? I say take the air-force =P , all you'd need is 1 AC-130 gunship to wipe the roman empire off the map. provided you take the fuel/ammunition required with you.

It'd be interesting to come back to present times after and see what the writings left over from that era say. probably something along the lines of a "flying demon" destroying the roman empire.

You do know we have a ton of Afghan soldiers working with US troops in Afghanistan right? :P That pretty much all of them have been trained by our own troops? And that it's not uncommon for them to be with US troops from what I'm told by my brother who was, well, serving in Afghanistan about 2 years ago.

As for ammo/fuel, they address that. And realize most first world countries aren't used to the unfiltered waters and foods that'll be present in that time. They'll do what they can to purify it, but supplies are limited :P in fact, if you think 2200 marines can beat an empire of millions, I dunno. Even then. Some real historians are even commenting on this short story and saying how their best hope would be guerrilla tactics cause we know for a fact the Romans weren't trained for that (as many real battles in history have shown) and that their real hope would be to draw support from people inside the Empire against its rulers and trying to cause a civil war.

It's interesting.

you do realize like every other week there's a US soldier killed BY the afghan soldier they trained right? an afghan soldier turning their gun on their trainers has been happening pretty often over there.

Yes, I do know that, but this was also started I think before those reports were as prevalent. So there is that to take into account. There are still tons of Afghan soldiers with the US Soldiers though. Cause I believe most don't do that. But I could be wrong, haven't kept up well enough on current events in general lately.
