RPGs Galore (56k Beware)

All of them RPGs you listed look amazing, I can't wait to get buy them :3 As for Too Human... I personally hated the demo, maybe I'll rent it...

If Fallout 3 is an RPG then throw up Too Human I say. Hell, bein' Diablo-like, Too Human needs to be there anyway.

Out of all of those I probably wont be touchin' Fallout 3 or Fable 2. Shooters that act RPG I've never liked and I hated Fable with a passion.

you never played Fallout 1 or 2 huh? :P and why should an RPG only have swords, staves, bows, and shit? Why can't it have guns? XD

To me it seems more about the gameplay style than the weapon choice. Never got that RPG feel from Elder Scrolls: Oblivian, to be perfectly honest. It felt to me like a hack and slash with RPG stats.

The term itself is very subjective. Is it defined by the name, in that you "play a role," then damn near every game is an RPG. Is it defined by your characters getting stronger? Then Zelda is an RPG. Do they have to gain levels? Then FF10 isn't an RPG.

We seem to sort of know an RPG when we are playing one, except there are disagreements in some of the more -between- games... Zelda, Kingdom Hearts, Too Human? I mean hell, MLB: The Show has introduced RPG elements into the Road to the Show. However to me... it feels like a baseball game with RPG elements... and Oblivian feels like a hack and slash type game with RPG elements, and Fallout seems like a shooter with RPG elements, just like Bioshock, and Mass Effect came before it.

KH is an inbetween? O.o

Games like Mass Effect, Oblivion and Fallout are the western style RPG. I know you are aware of that but maybe that the reason you feel the way you do. You are too used to JRPGs? I personaly enjoy western RPGs more so far, tho the numbers are so few. The gameplay feels a little bit more saturated to me.

RPGs can be almost any game Fire lol.. They need have just a couple key things as far as i am concerned. Social interaction, evolution of characters over the game, exploration, quests and combat... Many games fit in there for me and they are RPGs. The fact devs incorperate rpg elements into their games is a great thing i think.

EDIT: Ele the way fire is looking at the genre, then yes KH is for sure a quastionable RPG.

There's nothing wrong with RPG elements being inserted into other genres. Like seriously, the Road to the Show is the best mode in a sports game ever. Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite series. Just trying to pin down an accurate way of identifying the term. You can go extremely classical, and then a lot of games don't qualify as RPGs, and you can go very loose, and then really... most games quality as RPGs. It's not a bad thing, just kind of hard to say what belongs on the list.

As for western RPG versus JRPG, it's not a preference for one specific style as much as it is storytelling. To me, for RPGs, gameplay isn't the biggest issue, as much as storytelling. If they combine well, you get a terrific game. Unfortunately, few Western RPGs end up that way. I mean, what's the king of the hill, Mass Affect? It's an interesting enough plot by video game and even RPG standards, but the storytelling was never that great. None of the characters has personalities or emotions. I even remember rescuing some chick from her mother who was trying to kill her, and she just talks about it matter of factly right as it's happening.

The American mentality is to create great gameplay with a story to drive the purpose behind it, and the Japanese mentality seem to be to create an interesting story and create interesting enough gameplay so you don't pass out. Unfortunately Japanese games love to add stupid kiddy bullshit. Can only take so much of that.

To be fair with Mass Effect its not only the game was good and story was good.. The greatness of the game has to do with the communication menu.. That thing was incredible and i would love for other games to copy it. I understand your point about the emotions in the game and you are right.

Has nothing to do with the weapons. The game just doesn't look or sound interesting to me, especially with the healthy selection I'll have by then.

I see, have you seen you can play it like a FPS if you want? :P

Yeah, there are better FPS games. Better looking, not graphics wise just the look of the game and everything doesn't interest me, at least. To me Shooter/RPG is just the worst genre imaginable. There are so many good shooters that make better shooters and so many RPGs that make better RPGs, if that makes sense to you. It's just not a safe mix for me. I didn't care for Bioshock, I hated Mass Effect, and I never liked games like the system Shock series. I don't really care for Shooters to much either if they don't have multiplayer. Multiplayer makes the Shooter worth their salt to me, Resident Evil aside as it's an exception to the rule.

The only thing about Fallout 3 and why I probably wont even try it is timing. Here's my list for the upcoming months.

Tales of Vesperia
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
Guilty Gear 2: Overture (More exited about this than any other title to date)
Infinite Undiscovery
Mercs 2
Gears 2
Quantum of Solace (finally a Bond game to rival Goldeneye, I hope. Built on the CoD4 engine)
and a back-log of PS2 games that sizes up with Firestreak's.

I'd be in the same boat as strid with this one, but its a Bethesda game, and like Atlus/Nis and a Tales game, i'll blindly buy almost any game that remotely interests me.

JRPGs are an entirely different breed, but Fallout, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, KOTOR, Diablo, etc., are all branded as RPG because of stat/talent/perk point allocation. This kind of character progression obviously stems from Dungeons and Dragons, which is really the definitive RPG.

Most JRPGs handle the allocations for you with preset dumping, but they still use a behind-the-scenes dicee throw style mechanism to determine you success in battle.

This is the sole reason that Zelda isn't an RPG. It has neither of these elements. If you swing the Master Sword and connect with something, it's a hit. Link doesn't get stronger through individual customization(automatic or manual,) but simply through health upgrades and a wider variety of attacks. Link using the same sword at the begining of the game and the end still hits for the same amount of damage.

Star Ocean IV is also listed on the press release and is lacking an "exclusive on Xbox 360"

I'm curious about that :P

I'm curious about that :P

There is an interview with the devs that say SO4 is not coming to the PS3 period...
Yet we know how much their word is worth lol...

lol ya, just how FFXIII is PS3 only :P

My RPG backlog is crazy, so I'll probably wait on a price drop for all except FF13 and maybe Tales... I think it's understandable tho...

I still need to play...

All 3 Shadow Hearts for PS2.
Rogue Galaxy
Persona 1-3
Both Star Oceans
Both PS1 Tales
Tales of Symphonia, Eternia
Disgaea 2
FF: Crisis Core
Skies of Arcadia
Xenosaga 3
Suikoden 5
Chrono-cross

And I still gotta finish Lost Odyssey, Disgaea 1 and Tales of the Abyss...

I doubt I'll finish Mass Effect or Elder Scrolls Oblivian... they both bored me.

It's pretty sickening, cause I'm talking about games I own... yet I'm strangely impatient for new games to come out.

At any rate. Tales of Vesperia and FF13 for me. I don't know about Star Ocean, because the PS2 one bored me A LOT and I haven't opened the PS1 one yet.

But I mean... when you look at the huge mass of PS1 and PS2 RPGs, it's almost good that this gen is so freaking weak RPG wise, because I bet most of us have games left to beat... or overlooked PS2 RPGs we might want to buy and get into.
hahah i also got a huge list of games i need to playi got a stack in my room of unfinished/not opened PS1 PS2 RPGs

Lol, there's a few more I forgot about too... some go pretty far back...

Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy Tactics PSP
Jean d' Arc
Dark Cloud 1/2
Some of these shin megumi games... digital devil saga 1, 2, nocturne
dragon quest: fire quarter
tales of the world
And I just picked up fable and morrowwind too...
also got knights of the old republic 1 and 2
oh yeah: and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles

and a few other games I wanna pick up before they're impossible to get

FF11 really did suck up all my gaming time whie quite a few games were coming out - and having N64 over PS1 also delayed quite a few rpg completions.

Man no kidding! Thats one thing I hate about MMO's. It completely kills all other gaming that you would otherwise play. I was doing fine for over a year till i went back to WoW and have since sold my xbox 360 because i never play it lol. Thank God school is starting back up and my desire to play WoW is leaving again. Guess ill have to buy the 360 again.

MMORPGs and living on campus are pretty impossible unless you're a pretty big shut in. It's not so much about having time alone, rather the more randomness of when people are going to want to do something and how little warning you might have. You won't be reliable for events and might have to leave suddenly. The crux of MMORPGs isn't so much the time sink but that they require stacked blocks of time where you can't even look away from the screen or take a piss.

Single player games are much more sensible in that situation. But much more expensive, since you'll wind up paying so much more on different games as opposed to the subscription charge to fill up the free time you'll still have.
