I have the "Two rings of death" All day i keep getting two red rings. Every couple of hours I try to turn it back on and for a few seconds it will, then bam two red rings.

Microsoft says it's overheating if it does this. Well it's been doing all day. Maybe a fan is broke?

The damn elite isn't even a year old.

in most cases like this the inside of the xbox is caked in dust. When this happens it over heats very very fast. Ive had many friends with this problem, i get paid to clean it out and it works like a charm.

How can you go about properly cleaning the dust? I'd like to start doing this once maybe every 6 months to keep it well maintained rather than suffer more hassle with these consoles.

its actually a very easy process once you know how to open the xbox.
Take the faceplate off, make a key out of an old cd spindle. Guides to opening the xbox can be found online and videos on youtube.
get a torx 10 screw driver to take out the appropriate screws from the metal casing, then get a can of compressed air and spray it all out, put it back together and your done.

Maybe, but I think it's a good chance the fans are broke, or at least one is :(

you can look at the back of the case when its on and see if the fans are working, if one of the fans break they both break since they are one item.

Thanks Chasym =)

May as well to keep it running as well as possible.

Anglis, good luck with your console.

Aaah it's shot. It won't stay on long enough. It's not dust.

Damn you microsoft! Oh well, time to ship back lol.

Yeh one of my elites has this problem £60 to fix it gogo? Ughm,, I'm actually xboxless right now as my other elite got 3 red lights.

I think im the only Xbox owner to never get RRed.

And Ive owned 3 over their lifetime.

your not alone haha, i have a launch box and its still runnin great, i have an elite i got two years ago and thats runnin great, and i just bought a supposedly RROD'd one off ebayand as it turns out it worked as soon as i turned it on, it just needed a new drive which i replaced and ended up with a cheap 360!

I have three other boxes sittin here right now that friends have all dropped off for me to fix, and so far ive got two of em back up and runnin and workin on the third.

This sound weird to anyone? My 360 just began giving me problems, but only when I play Fallout 3 :/ I play for like 5-10 mins, then it freezes and I have to turn it off.. turn it back on and get the RROD. If I do the towel trick it works fine again and basically all my other games run smooth - just fallout 3 crashes it. And on another note, why does the towel trick make it work again? People say it's bad for your 360... but if it makes it work again, how bad can it really be? hehe

Ok scratch the only when I play fallout 3 part, it just froze when I started it up ><

I think it's changed lol all my friends have been getting 1 red light while i got 3 about a year ago

I've never had the RROD as well.

First box. DVD broke destroying COD4 in the process
Second box. Horrible screen tearing had to replace it.
Third box. Two Red Rings. Replacement on the way lol.

The towel trick is bad for the xbox just because the components aren't meant to go under that kind of strain. The towel trick is also bad for your house, because if something happens, its the perfect place for a fire to start.

I've had 3 xboxes also and never had a RRoD. First one had a harddrive failure so i upgraded to an elite. First Elite ended up having a bum ethernet port right out of the box so i swapped that one for the elite that i have now.

have you tried the clearing the cache code?

Other than that, it seems like an overheating hardware issue, generally the video component in this case. Eventually it will freeze and it will be black and white, blue, green or red. Sometimes the color will wash out while you play then get all glitchy and go back to normal.
This is a failing video card due to being warped in overheating or wearing out.

The towel trick works because when you overheat or "Cook" your xbox, it softens all the solder and components. Then when you let it cool down it hardens it all back up and makes a tighter/stronger connection for the components.
This is very bad to do regardless of if it works, because the towel trick will only work a few times, as it wears down the components at a very fast rate. And no matter if it works or not, this trick is ALWAYS Temporary. And eventually the trick will not work at all.

It may seem like its fall out 3 causing it, but i assume you might just play that game the most right now?
This error can come from any game at this point, its never just one game that causes it. Youll find that people online will get a new game then BAM their box freezes when playing and it RROD's, and they instantly blame that game. This is common on major gaming sites in every single game forum, someone will get a game, it RRODS and they blame that game. I think every major game ive seen come out and visit a forum for has been blamed.
Its not limited to one game, you just seem to notice it when you play a certain one, its just coincidence there.

I put a hoover on a light suction next to the xbox on a regular basis, gets a shit load of dust and crap out or to the surface so you can clear it out with some tweezers. Works wonders :3

I've had 7 xbox 360's; none of them have RRoD'd, just other, more "annoying problems":

First problem: FFXI disc couldn't be read, and the message once the xbox had tried to read the disc was "Open Tray", as if no disc were in. I could sit on my couch and auto-open/close tray, and after anything from 15 minutes to 1 hour one night it would take for ffxi to read the disc.

Second problem: It spread to other games, DVD's, new + unused discs, everything. Eventually, my xbox was a great source of noise pollution and not a great deal else.

Rinse/Repeat 6 times, and you get to where I'm at now. And that's not even talking about my wife's xbox's.

Just did, I'll notify in a few days if anything changes for better or worse. Thanks for the advice as always.

edit* didn't fix it :( thinking about taking my xbox apart and trying the cleaning/re-applying arctic gunk and taking the x clamps off.
