Quick WoW question: About the promotion/demotion thing in guilds; What kind of benefits do members get if they're promoted?
People keep saying Guilds > LS, but no one ever explains why?
A link to a web page is good enough
The guild control panel in WoW gives you a ton of options that you can turn on and off for any rank in the guild (you can also specify rank names). Options like:
Read guild chat,
Post in guild chat,
add members,
remove members,
Demote/Promote other members,
Read/post officer chat.
Set MotD/Guild information.
Set personal/officer notes
There are more, but I can't remember off the top my head. But anywho, you can specify your own rank tiers and then specify permission for each tier. It's pretty powerful. You can see everyone that's in the guild (online or not), promote, demote, set notes, kick, etc... The only thing a person needs to be online for is to recieve an invite (and that can be done from anywhere in the world). You can set short notes for each member too, which is nice because people tend to use it to post their crafting skills to the rest of the guild. You can also see how long it's been since a member was last logged in. Oh, and you can change guild leaders too, incase a leader wants to step down.
The downside to having that much control is that I'm sure it builds up a lot of drama and bureaucracy. Although, I wouldn't know because we're pretty casual in my guild (everyone has permission to do everything).
Guild Wars has a similar, but more minimalist system.
3 pre-determined tiers (guild master, officer, member). Masters can invite, kick and promote to officer. Officers can basically invite and kick. There's no restriction on chat channels or anything like that. It's pretty basic, but it works. Also, any new characters you create are automatically and MUST be in the same guild as your first character. Which is kind of a good idea in GW because guilds are extremely competitive and require loyalty to function. WoW, on the other hand, treats each character individually.
So yeah, that's why people like guilds so much better than LSs. I wouldn't want LSs to have as many options as WoW because I think people would abuse them to be dictating pricks, but it couldn't hurt to have some of the features that would simply make LS management a little easier. Change leader, full and complete member list, invite without being in person (or at the very least let us send Pearls through the mail), promote/demote sac for offline members. That's all I think is really necessary.
