SE is flawed

This has been brought up many a time before, I know, but I would like to point out one particular flaw that came to my attention when updating FFXI earlier today.

Roughly around 3:40 PM Central, I began updating FFXI as usual. This time it went faster than normal, however, once it got to about 99% complete downloading, the timer stopped at 9 seconds and 1 file to go. I remembered that if i closed the game, then pulled POL back up, it would resume like normal on the last file. This was not the case in this circumstance... How I have no idea...

Once I booted up POL again, I proceeded to make my way to the "Check Version" button. As I clicked, a message appeared saying that my update didnt finish and i need to restart FFXI.

I hesitated to follow the instructions, but I eventually gave in. So as I began uninstalling FFXI to reinstall it, I noticed some files that it asked me if I wanted to delete them. Whether SE intended on making FFXI a "Install once or your computer is fried" game, I dont know. What really steamed me was that a message came up saying windows .dll files and etc. were missing. I discarded this thinking that it wasnt much of my concern. The message repeatedly popped up and I forced myself to restart. As the dell screen popped up and went away at bootup, the message appeared again in dos... which meant I couldnt load windows... And in turn caused me to have to reinstall windows in order to get back into POL... how odd, I know.

So now about 3 hrs later, I'm sitting here with a new install of windows typing to you while SE screws up my life trying to get me to reinstall FFXI...

What a wonderful way to waste 3 hrs of my life.

The samething happend to me but I waited about 10min or so and when I came back it was finished. Did you wait a little bit or no?

I didnt wait... I closed the window and tried to get back in but it just told me to reinstall FFXI >.>

The same EXACT thing happened to me. I did the whole "check version" thing about four hours ago, fully expecting to be able to play when the servers finally opened at 2:00 PM PST.

Alas, Playonline froze in the middle of downloading at 99%, with one file to go. I, too, expected it to simply resume if I started it back up. I was told instead that I had to re-install Final Fantasy XI.

Doing so forced an uninstallation (something it should NOT need to do for a simple re-install), which I grudgingly accepted. Something went drastically wrong, however, as I encountered a Windows error stating that their uninstallation software also deleted important *.dll files.

After running through and seeing exactly what was missing (olepro.dll and the "cmd.exe" system executable was among them), I realized my only hope of getting my machine stable again was a full Windows re-install. I've just come back from the hours I had to invest in that, including a re-installation of my video card drivers, all the Windows security updates, service pack 2, etc. I'm holding off on my virus software. I'm almost AFRAID to try to re-install FFXI now, but I know I'm going to have to try eventually.

I want to fish. :/

DEAR GOD, SE really fucked up this time... god knows how many {Help Desk} reports are going to occur... SE better work in overtime to make sure this doesnt happen again. Thank god i didnt push Reformat... Everything would have gone byebye ><

yeah, the problem was with the last file, 46.dll. It said "Skipped install" or something to that extent on the file.

Was sitting there for 5 min waiting for it, then eventually it said it was ready. And yeah, FFXI is known to mess up computers when you reinstall it due to update problems. I dunno why =/

happened to me after a reinstall of windows because of problems i was having with WoW (BSOD). installed FFXI got to 99% of the huge complete update and bam started skipping files.

What do i do, shut down the program (not knowing of what happens when i do that). so i get the reinstall FFXI on startup of PoL. well guess whats crashed now....ya my fresh copy of windows i just got done installing because of WoW. so after hell with FFXI, WoW and Windows i had a couple of fun days.

the second time around everything went smooth and i have yet to have problems with FFXI, WoW or Windows. i still kinda want to know what we are supposed to do in that situation when the update locks up. i let it run skipping files for more than an hour and i dont know what else i should have done to save windows

Same thing happened to me when I was updateing, but I just left it sitting at 99% and went afk for like 10 min, when I came back the update was finished. Just have to be patient I guess =/

Very few if you can't get on FFXI to use the help desk :P

Well, a little update...

I've just come back from re-installing FFXI. I had forgotten how long a fresh install takes, but I did EVERYTHING, including:

1) Playonline
2) FFXI
3) Zilart
4) CoP

I had about three hours of bloody patch time. >_<

The important thing to note, however, is the SAME EXACT THING happened as I was nearing the end of my update: the freeze at 99%, with one file to go, and Playonline saying it had been skipped.

THIS TIME, however, I took the very wise advice of just letting it be, and within five minutes, Playonline simply pushed something through and FFXI booted up. I hadn't configured anything, so it looked horrible (640x480 resolution, low-textures), but it was the sweetest sight I've seen in a while.

I've got everything on my system up and running again, and actually better than it was before (I guess I was really due for a little PC spring cleaning, and this just forced it on me). Fortunately for me, I had the presence of mind to back up my macros before I tried the initiall FFXI re-instal that blew everything to pieces the first time.

Long story short: if you get this error, just be patient, and WAIT. It should just sort itself out in a few minutes.

yeah....SE really bums me out sometimes....

Huh....this is odd. Didn't happen to me. Guess I rock too much!

lol

But it did happen to my RL friend, Velio (or Velioo on the boards). I was laughing hard at his misfortune....because that's what I do. ^_^

Happened to me

I also sat at 99% for about 5 minutes...but when it was done I noticed something...all the time that it was sitting there it was installing, because it skipped right from downloading to complete, no installing time like usual.

i had no trouble neither did my husband went straight into download and was done jumped on for an hour and bam " please log out emergancy maitence" >.>
