Woot, finally some helpful information from good 'ole Fern.

So being in NA.. I'm thinking Diabolos looks like a bad-ass server name. (Plus he's my favorite Summon, GF, etc etc.)

Partially curious as to what non-1.0 character players will be choosing for an RP server, seems like the 1.0 RPers are still going to be keeping with Balmung.

I ask because generally RPers seem to be a nicer bunch of people, from my experience in other MMOs that had designated RP servers.

So, I know I'm curious as to what everyone's possible plans are.

When I see Hyperion, I can't help but think of Boarderlands 2. Such a fun game that was.

Considering Hyperion.

Also fyi, the data center for NA/EU is in Ontario, if location factors into your choice.

Yeah... it's up in Canadaland. But they have stated they will introduce more (datacenters) in the future if it is something that needs to be done. Hopefully Beta Phase 3 will either show them they need more, or show everyone else that it's actually fine where they have it.

Edit: And just considering I experienced no noticeable problems in P2 when the servers were all in Japan... I hardly except to see anything with servers that are even closer.

So I guess we should figure out where to play lol I don't want to play with only strangers!

Thanks, updated.

Also, why are you going to be on JP servers?
Probably not Strid's reason in particular, but my Australian friends are considering playing on a JP server due to the time zone and distance.

Also sharing Lanien's sentiments. I'd like to play with some old QCDN'rs if we can decide on a server!

I have a shell that I will probably be going with that will be on the Balmung server. I am not into RP but the people are usually friendly.

Also, why are you going to be on JP servers?

It's primarily a guild decision, and this is only how we're leaning now, not the final decision, but the idea is that Japanese players will probably keep to their own servers instead of play on NA/EU ones, so if we want the interaction like in XI, XIV 1.0, and PSO2 we better stick to their servers. As well, the majority of us who do not live in Japan do not have a problem with playing on Japanese servers for a game like this, where as those that do would rather not play on servers that have a dominant western "state of being."

Hmm, well I guess time will tell. I kind of wasn't expecting so many to actually continue using their 1.0 characters on the new game tbh, so that's a bummer I guess since I am not playing on a Legacy server and have zero desire to do so.

Not that I wouldn't want to hang out with you guys, it's just my 1.0 character is barely leveled. I think my Gladiator was my highest at 10. I don't want to try to compete with tons and tons of people that already have level 50s with relic gear, not to mention way more gil available.

So far it seems everyone from this forum is going with a Legacy server except me. Oh well. :/ The only part that's going to suck is if my RL friends do the "MMO Flake-Out" that seems to be the trend with them. Only one of them I know of that stuck with a few MMOs for a while, he played DAoC and SW Galaxies (before it changed) for extended periods. Then again, nobody I knows stayed with an MMO like I did with XI. Other than other XI players, which none of my RL friends are (couldn't get through the downsides to enjoy it early on). I wish more people that I actually played XI, Aion and XIV 1.0 with were using this site still.

I know I'm going to be playing with whatever RL friends give the game a chance because I want to get them into the game. The only bad part about that is we all tend to have been kind of seclusionary in other MMOs. We'd make our own guild, invite whatever of our friends were playing, and often times that'd be it. Though I'd invite people I thought were fun to play with, I don't really know how well they were received by my other friends.

At least this time around I can just make a Linkshell for us and have everybody use that to keep up with chatting. Hopefully there will be some decent casual-ish FCs out there that still like to get organized to accomplish things. I don't really like being a leader in video games because that just means I have to invest more of my time into decision making for content on a game where I should just primarily be having fun and enjoying myself, which is much easier accomplished on the sidelines as a team member in terms of an MMO.

Not that I didn't enjoy being in things in XI that were strategic and required me do some minor "leadership" type things, but things like Dynamis were never really all that fun. It was just the only way to obtain that relic gear that I wanted to have. Blarg, I'm rambling. Done.

I wouldn't worry so much about the gear and gil thing. We were a year or so late to the FFXI party and that turned out alright. As well, in XIV gil really isn't a big deal, it wouldn't be too far to say it's like gold in WoW, TERA, or any other game with a fairly low necessity placed on the currency. As for gear, more people having the gear just means that it should be easier on you when it comes time to get it. That said, there is no telling how the "elitism" is going to play out so... who knows with that.

I wouldn't worry about having high level people around on a legacy server, there are plenty of people that don't have all the jobs leveled, and the new jobs being added will need to be leveled. Out of every person I have talked to that is coming back Legacy, The first thing they plan on doing is leveling a new job. Also, The servers are primarily for the transfer, we will have the option to take legacy characters to ANY server once we log in and are transferred, unless you are in phase 4, we will be allowed to re-roll our characters in Phase 4 to be set for launch and just pick you're server right out of the gate.

I don't know about that. 1.0 characters can only be played on the Legacy servers, period. Not sure where you got the misunderstanding you could move them to another server (unless it's another Legacy server). This was intentionally decided because Yoshida doesn't want an influx of level 50 characters with other fresh players, because those 1.0 characters with pre-existing level 50 jobs, relic armor and a lot more gil, would be have an obvious advantage against all new players to the game at P4/Launch.

Yoshi's pretty big about trying to keep things fair.

That's why new players have the option of joining a Legacy server if they want to. However 1.0 characters cannot join a non-Legacy server. They have stated that in the future, they may allow for transfers of 1.0 characters to other servers. Likely when the majority of new players have reach level 50 on at least one Job.

I'm pretty sure they'll open up server transfers completely once the levels on the new servers are more spread out anyway. Legacy's p much like RME in XI at the moment; quite the head start if you have it, but eventually Delve weapons with obscene stats are going to eclipse what progress you made. No reason not to thrust the doors wide open for anyone to go anywhere after a few months of new players getting to 50 and doing Crystal Tower/Bahamut's lair.

From what was explained to us during a live stream, When you get onto a Legacy server it serves the purpose of basically having your character transferred and assuring it is completely intact and has no errors or missing items etc. You then get a complimentary re-roll of your character, design, name etc. You can then stay on the server, or choose any other server you wish to go to, not limited to Legacy. They said they didn't feel it would be fair to Legacy players to be stuck to a limited set of servers if they wished to transfer to a fresh server. Granted this was months ago and may have changed, He seemed pretty confident about that being a thing. Not really much difference though since I do want to level from a level 1 on a job anyway just so I can get the feel for it all and run into some of the new content/items like everyone else.

That's a wild interpretation that I've never heard until you brought it up, to be honest with you. I've seen all the live streams and kept up with things regularly and the role that the Legacy servers will serve is quite clear in that if you want to continue to play as your old, 1.0 XIV character, you have to keep that character on a Legacy server. You will be able to re-customize [fully] the character, but the server has to remain a Legacy server. They have said though, that if they decide to implement server transfers at a later date, then we could possibly move our Legacy character to a new server, but this would require a significant amount of time to lapse first.

The entire idea behind the Legacy servers was specifically stated to be so that these experienced characters would not be able to influence the "fresh" servers. The idea that experienced characters can freely go to wherever we please [until later in the game cycle] just completely undoes the entire point of the system as they explained it.

Strid pretty much said what I would have said.

Not sure how you got that interpretation Chasym. I've watched the Live Streams as well, and then again after being translated. They all have said exactly what I've already said. Sorry, but I am fairly sure you misinterpreting something. You're the only person I've seen even bring up this take on it, and I have been kind of addicted to the beta forums.. where all manner of really retarded questions have been asked and mostly answered.

so wait... our rank 50's that we left pre ARR are only gonna be playable on legacy servers? meaning if i wanna play on a reg server i have to start over from scratch?

If thats true it sounds pretty shitty and sorta kills any desire i had to return, when they promised we could keep the characters we worked on i didnt realize they meant only on specific servers. will people new to FFXIV with ARR be able to join legacy servers, or only people who played pre ARR?

if the latter it sounds like the legacy servers may be badly underpopulated, that.... would suck.
