I'm wondering if I could get some feedback, preferably from Elvaan RDM as to their experiences when using the spells "Sleep" and "Sleep II".

So here's my questions, and anyone is welcome to answer what they've experienced before:

1. What is your rate of success percentage, and on what mobs? (T, VT, IT)
a. Using Sleep I
b. Using Sleep II
c. Using Elemental Seal + Sleep I
d. Using Elemental Seal + Sleep II

I've never actually seen a parse of their effectiveness.

Sleep I "seems" only marginally less accurate than Sleep II on mobs that have a reasonably high resist rate (eg Dynamis-Xarca mobs).

Sleep duration "seems" to be fixed, and both Sleep I and Sleep II have pretty decent durations.

Elemental Seall adds a LOT to sleep accuracy, to the point that you can fairly reliabley sleep mobs with ES that are nearly impossible to sleep without it (eg. Wyrms)

Only impressions though, from a couple of years of sleeping Dynamis mobs, and sleep-nuking things...

Sleeping EXP mobs is normally best left for people that have good skill in Dark Magic (or any other way they're going to sleep a monster). As a RDM, your job is more to protect the BLM that will be sleeping the mob, not sleeping the mob by yourself, because your darkness skill is pretty low. However, once you reach 51, as long as you have a dark staff, sleeping most EXP mobs will not be a big problem.

...isn't Sleep based on Enfeebling Magic?

Sorry,I should of mentioned, these questions are directed for XP mobs though info on other types of mobs like HNMs, dynamis etc are also welcome. I guess i'm mostly curious as for RDMs, what they chose to cast when sleeping links, and to get an idea to understand their choice I was hoping to get some information on success rates and spell durations.

Is there a difference between Sleep I and Sleep II spell duration? Or is the difference of these two spells only the accuracy? Meaning that Sleep II is less likely to be resisted? And Elemental Seal, it doesn't have an affect on the duration of the spell either right? Only affects the spell being resisted?

Yeah, it is. I have capped Dark magic and +15 skill as 75 drk, but a decently gimped enfeebling since i stopped pulling with poison and started pulling with Bio. And i can barely stick sleep on DC's sometimes.

Yes, sleep is Enfeebling magic. Dark Skill has nothing at all to do with the Sleep spells...

Sleep(ga) lasts 60 seconds, sleep(ga) II lasts 90 seconds. Those are unresisted times, they can last half that duration through a partial resist. Sleep(ga) II overwrites Sleep(ga) and both Lullabies, starting the timer over at 90 seconds if unresisted, or 45 seconds if partially resisted.

If you absolutely need Sleep to land, as in a link, use ES/Sleep II it will give you your best chance. On mobs that have no resistance to Dark Element though, you'll have a pretty good success rate on Sleep I and Sleep II without ES as well though, and RDM will have far better success with the Sleep spells than any other job.

For Accuracy of Sleep, ES, Enfeebling Skill, Dark/Pluto's Staff, and to a lesser extent INT will all help.

Not every dark elemental spell runs off Dark Magic. (And not every Dark Magic spell is dark elemental either - see Stun.)

Dark Magic: Bio, Bio II, Bio III, Drain, Aspir, Tractor (I think; may be Enhancing), Absorb-STR, Absorb-DEX, Absorb-VIT, Absorb-AGI, Absorb-INT, Absorb-MND, Absorb-CHR, Absorb-TP
Enfeebling Magic: Sleep, Blind, Sleep II, Dispel, Sleepga, Sleepga II, Blind II
Enhancing Magic: Warp, Warp II, Escape

All of the above are black magic, all are dark elemental, but they run off three different skills. *Most* are Dark Magic skill yes, but some aren't.

Dark Magic isnt Black Magic, Dark Magic is Dark Magic and Black Magic is the elemental stuff Thunder, Fire, ect.

Its listed in the menu as a Black Magic Spell.

Banish is Divine, but its still White Magic.

In the case that the spells are not resisted, would it be possible to then have a mob slept for a total of 150 seconds? If you cast: Sleep I (60 seconds) and then immediately after cast Sleep II (90 seconds) = 150 seconds of the mob being slept?

Does anyone have a rough idea of how often their sleep spells are resisted if their enfeebling is capped or close to being capped? This is for VT and IT mobs. Is Sleep I (without and without Elemental Seal) likely to be resisted on these kinds of mobs?

(Also, this is assuming that the RDM has dark staff equipped, and decent INT gear)

You can cast Sleep 2 over Sleep 1 just fine, but Sleep 2's timer starts as soon as it lands. You *can* get almost 150 seconds (assuming both are unresisted), but you'll have to wait on the Sleep 2 until the mob is just about to wake up from the Sleep 1.

If you do Sleep 1, followed immediately by Sleep 2, it won't end up sleeping much longer total than if you'd just used Sleep 2 in the first place (the difference would be the few seconds that it had Sleep 1, before Sleep 2 was put in place).

Once you get staves, there really isn't much resistance to sleep by normal experience mobs unless the mob is dark resistant. As RDM with capped enfeebling on VT-IT mobs, your enfeebling would be high enough for you to not worry about resists. With AF body, I it's be even less of an issue. In my experience, if the RDM was ever resisted on sleep I or II, they were easily able to cast the other spell and it was rarely resisted. The only few exceptions I can think of were when someone pulled an IT+++++ mob and another with an Exoray (dark based).

Ahh, thanks for the clarification and info guys. Pretty much answers all my questions. At the moment I haven't had any problems with my sleep spells being resisted, but more or less wanted to get a better understanding of how the spells worked seeing as SE likes to let us figure out things by ourselves -_-;

I'll update this when i get more time time to go to class but for now...

Yes sleep is enfeebling i have seen my enfeebling rise doing it

I would expect a rdm to land sleep before a blm more later why..

Zerayla, you probably noticed me getting quite a few resists early on in our party Monday night. A couple cases was just bad luck, getting resisted against an IT+ beetle before I hit 51 to equip the Dark Staff. Other times, I was still reassessing my macro setup, and either had forgotten to equip +INT gear before casting or forgot to equip my Dark Staff.

However, our campsite could not have given me a better practice session, and after setting my Dark Staff equip line in macros for both Sleep spells, I was landing pretty much all of my Sleep spells and handling the links with ease. I didn't even touch Elemental Seal after that (I should consider using that for Aspir). I don't think I was even getting any partial resists, because I was watching the clock and noticed the mobs were always sleeping for the full durations.

When I try holding a mob using the Sleep -> Sleep II method, I've been watching the game clock as a guide for when to cast Sleep II. Every guide I've ever looked at suggests Sleep lasts for 30 game minutes. (This might be debatable. 30 game minutes ~= 72 RL seconds, not 60. Next time I login, I'm just going to cast and time it for myself.) So somewhere around ~25 game minutes after I had cast Sleep, I put Sleep II on the mob for good measure, and that will last for 37 game minutes (which does = 150 RL seconds). If that's still not enough time, it's not too hard to time another Sleep spell in between mob attacks if you've gotten aggro.

It brings me great comfort to know I can keep a mob incapacitated over 2.5 minutes for the MP cost of a single Cure III spell.

i've recently become the puller for those merit/cannon pt's in the staging point areas as rdm, pulling with sleep I and sleep II and sometimes with gravity. i have equip macros for my sleep spells using all enfeebling gear that i have. rarely get resisted as my enfeebling is capped to include just 1 merit on it. there are some cases, since some of the mobs have some high resistance on magic, that i might have to cast sleep II or vice versa to make sure the mob is sleep. sometimes i get very unlucky and neither sleep spell can sleep the mob. MEH... stoneskin/blink/phlanax/w.legs ftw!
