Some technical thoughts

Reading up on the discussions so far... and a lot of good ideas where mentioned. I thought I'd share some technical info for consideration and thoughts. Url is first but before I forget I wanted to post this.

Option 1:

I can "park" a domain on top of QCDN. So "new.com" would show everything qcdn does. No more, no less. Easiest of the bunch to do.

Option 2:

Similar to the above, I have a mod that will allow us to selectively show certain forums based on the url used. We could have off topic forums appear on both.

Additional Pro and Con: The Post Counts, medals, awards, PM's and New Posts would show up on both equally. Some things, like the post count, we could possible reset to 0 and give everyone a QCDN or FFXI verteran tag.

Option 3:

Do a brand new install. I can import the current users over so they don't have to reregister. Totally separate installs. No connection between the two after launch.

Option 4:

Similar to Option 3, I have a different mod that should allow us to share specific forums between the two different installs. If you are on "new.com" and someone from QCDN replies, it would show up as Reeve @ QCDN or something like that. That might allow us to keep off topic forums running at the same time on both sites. The con is that I can import the users but I don't think I can keep them in sync after that. The mod to share forums is also complex and I don't know how well it works.

Option 3 or 4 seem most in line with the desires of most of the others.
I personally like option 2.

Of the options, I like Option 4 mixed with Option 1.

I like option 4 mixed with option 2. If I had to pick just one, I'd say option 2.

Option two was pretty much what I was thinking. I really want to separate the two sites but not segregate older users.

I like Option 2, with keeping post counts and such.

I like Option 2, without keeping post counts and such.

I actually meant without, because I kinda liked the veteran tag idea.

I just woke up, lemme alone.

I was actually going to make some "awards" for people everytime they reach one year two year etc etc

Sounds like a plan little man!

Option 2 here too, kinda like that veteran tag. Young whippersnappers should show some respect to the elderly who fought legions of beastmen and went through hell (CoP) and back after all!

Along with option 2:

I can probably start the post count at zero for everyone but move the existing post count to a different field in the user profile for "memorial"

Maybe in just the profile? Like if you go to someone's profile and hit "About Me/Stats" or something. I wouldn't want it to be like under post count or anything if you were to do that.

Nah, I don't think it's worth it to be honest. I need to e-mail you something soon anyways. xD I'm at Otakon this weekend so I'm semi here if you know what I mean. Hopefully it'll make sense!

Who gives a shit about old post count? Our priorities should be on usability and design right now, rather than if *our* stats from an old site are going to be pulled over or not.

I apologize for the aggressive tone, but we need to not lose sight of what needs to be done versus what we would like or feel we're owed.

your right, just don't want to delete it and then have people ask for it as it will be impossible at that point.

pfft, we're more risque than that! we're cutting edge.

Option 2 does sound the best. Post counts seem irrelevant even now. Personally, I don't take anyone less or more seriously based on their posts. Veteran tags sound exciting! Especially the different year ones. I think it's important to keep in mind not segregating too much though. As we've all seen, the Quetz Midgar merge already allowed a lot of closed mindedness to run rampant. I would just worry about people becoming childish again with "I'm a vet, you're not, your fault our boards are terrible/our systems don't work/your point isn't valid etc...etc.."
