State of the Thief

Because those jobs had proof to back up the claims, parses showing clearly those jobs could do good damage when properly played and not just by carreer DRG, DRK or MNKs, by all players. Prior to that, players didn't parse much if at all so people only speculated at who was the best. THF doesn't have that. All thief has is random parses by thieves looking for something to prove. If as a community as whole saw something different, it would be out there by now, but it's not. There are tons of great thieves out there are all the servers all looking to show proof their damage can surpass BB MNK, Ridill WAR, and Relic whatevers, but unless those parses show that on a consistent basis that THF can compete, it's nothing more than a fluke.

I don't see how that's relevant.

Regardless, i agree with most of what she's said.

Fluke

1. an accidental advantage; stroke of good luck: He got the job by a fluke.
2. an accident or chance happening.
3. an accidentally successful stroke, as in billiards.

Several people trying and succeeding is hardly a fluke. Imagine your "standard DD job" who waits to pull his weapons when they see that hate is grounded to the designated tank. Then they don't bother to use their job abilities, and only randomly use their WS not paying attention to that their TP might be. You'd say this DD sucks. So why is it that when a THF goes out and makes proper use of all the techniques available to them to deal damage that you belittle their efforts?

If you really do have THF leveled, and I have no reason to not believe you, then you are in fact one of those THFs we're talking about that make things worse for us. In this post, we're not trying to say that THF is the omgbroken DD. We're clarifying that we have a niche as a capable DD is there despite what the community thinks. Propaganda and people claiming to be experts can go a long way to sway opinions of those who haven't or can't experience it for themselves. A THF (or DD for that matter) who doesn't perform their job to its capability are the ones who claim to be experts in simply playing the job (referring to 75/merits) and give all other real experts a bad image. Unfortunately for THFs it does take a more concerted effort than other DDs to perform to their capacity. This leads to a lot of them slacking and half-assing the job. Again I bring your attention to early DRGs who made the hard working DRGs the laughing stock of FFXI, until ToAU when most the bad ones got other jobs or quit the game.

For Bladewind, I'll admit I don't know you well. That being given, on threads I read I see a lot of "I agree" or "I disagree" type posts from you, and I'm inclined to disregard your posts more on principal that you don't seam try to offer substance very often. I don't mind that you have your opinion but please try to back it up with a bit more of your point of view if nothing else... otherwise that to me is more of a post count +1 thing.

ok so I lvled thf to 75 around a year ago and well I would win most parses well lvling(at least close to 75 when I could equip my good gear) there's no question in my mind that no matter what my thf does it will never outperform my drg in merit PTs. I lvled it because I already had ass hands and its a great farming job. I have parses against pretty much ideal thfs with my drg and well they can parse very well, some of the closest parses I've had recently, they never end up on top.

thf is a good DD job that can do a lot of other things like help manage hate, help drop rates, can tank very well if they get hate and can be a very good SC partner(if that's something you choose to do). Will it ever be considered a top DD for like merits probably not and I can't really see SE doing anything more to improve thf. I personally don't really see thfs as any worse than other DDs though I mean they get bonus damage on colibri and give feint for lurkers so they're pretty solid in either camp.

I'm much more concerned about pups in that I still need to merit with one who can beat my wyvern, I'm pretty sure at least that should be possible.

In this post, we're not trying to say that THF is the omgbroken DD. We're clarifying that we have a niche as a capable DD is there despite what the community thinks.
That position is all well and good, but that's not what most of the "thf's can DD too!" people try to prove. Claiming that you can always beat BB monks, ridillberk wars, is not saying you're a viable DD, it's claiming you're the best. No one's really denying that THF's can put up good damage numbers if they're going the extra mile and have top gear. What they are denying, is thf's claiming that they're the best DD out there and that any thf can do it. The other problem is those same thf's trying to deny their role in a party. You don't invite a thf to a party(not a merit party) for damage, period; you invite them to help manage the hate of the party.

Personally, my hatred of thf's is not because they're not the top DD's. You touched on it briefly, it's the fact that most of them can't do even the simplest part of their job correctly. They can't SATA worth a shit, and end up creating a much greater problem with hate than they solve. Yeah, they're shitty thf's, but thf isn't a bandwagon job, so you can't say that it's really popular so lots of idiots play it. I used to tell party leaders to not invite thieves, because they were such a liability. Yes, there are great thieves that can play the job well, but they always seem few and far between.

not going to lie, I'm biased when it comes to job picking and usually it's with picking random names, unless I know you're a person that does well in your job and goes the extra mile then I wont pick you first.

I dont like to mess around when it comes to parties, if it makes meriting that much less painful then I'll do it. Sure I'll get a thf when I can't find a job I want more, but unless it's someone I know is good ie Twinzero then I'll probrably keep searching.

I like the job and played it briefly on another friends account, but I play by what I usually expect from people on terms of thf, nin(to a lesser extent), blu, rdm and a few others that dont immediately come to mind it's not much honestly.

One of the main issues I really see is mentality, and obviously, just a whole lot of people sucking at what we consider 'basic' concept of how to effectively use SA/TA (apparently not so simple with so many people failing at it...) - and that -Atk earrings aren't the brightest things to melee in... "I'm never going to do good damage anyway, so why bother" Could be said to one of the reasons, and people frankly not caring/ not knowing. Haven't done a serious test but I've noted the major difference in thieves just in Dynamis (I know... doesn't' really count but meh), as out of 3 thieves in the party I was in the difference in damage was staggering. and by staggering, each thief was a good 10% above/below the other. It's not only gear, but also effectively using it, and not just trying to play it like other DD, because you can't. Of the 3 thieves I mentioned, you could say the one in the lead was the one using all their tools as much and as best as they could, second had similar gear, but was trying to get away playing like a generic DD, and bottom of the barrel could be said to be the not caring thief.

<.< there's -att rings? I mean other than like -att +R.att? either I don't pay attention or I mentally block those out XD

They're evasion earrings, I call them -attack earrings cause no one should be meleeing in them but somehow every other thief I see fulltimes them...

EDIT: Oh, sorry, meant earrings, fixing that

I have had far more SAMs create hate problems than THFs. It seems a good 75% of SAMs today think every party is a cannon party and WS right at the start of fights before a tank can even provoke. I personally will not invite a NIN tank or SAM DD (that I don'tknow) unless I have a THF in party.

I highly dobut MOST of the THFs you invite can't SATA properly I rarely have a THF that can't SATA, I have far more NINs that can't tank worth shit. I'm thinking you just had a string of bad THFs a while ago and havent partied with one since.

That's being stupid, but they're still playing their job correctly. I'm talking about thieves that take 20-30 seconds while the mob is at the camp being hit to successfully pull off SATA. By then, the first voker has established a decent chunk of hate on himself, while almost being killed, so it makes hate shakier for the rest of the fight. Once I stopped leaders from inviting thf's, I could tank much better, and hold the mob's attention for the duration of the fight far more often.

Almost every single thief I partied with taking my NIN to 75, by around level 50, I just told leaders to stop inviting thieves because they were a waste of a slot. There was the rare exception, but easily 95% of the thieves I've partied with were a massive waste of a slot. I was in one the other day on my SCH, the thief couldn't SATA properly or close distortion with any reliability. He was useless.

A good tank doesn't need a thief, a bad tank needs a thief to be decent, but I'd rather get a better tank. I'm not big on depending on one player just to make another player suck less.

I don't think we were talking about those people who are bad at their job although I am sure it has something to do with the state thieves are in now all too much. However, bad players are in every job, it's just when you have a job like THF which requires more attention to do damage, it gets hindered all that much more.

I would like to clarify myself, I think people are getting a bad impression about what I meant. I don't necessarily want to discriminate against thieves in general, I would honestly love to get an invite on mine once in awhile, but I know that's not going to happen. I personally would invite some of the better well known thieves to merit given the chance (I don't merit much) if they were actively seeking; however, if I saw a BB MNK or Ridill WAR I knew, I would pass up those same thieves in a heart beat. In general though, I won't invite any thief I do not know and I would wager a good amount of the thieves here would do the same.

People don't seem to understand and various posters make that quite evident.
THF can & has proven it's place as job that can DD with other top tier DD jobs. The thing THF opponents fail to recognize and continuously gloss over is that playing THF as well as other top tier DD requires more than merely hacking away at the MOB and popping Zerk and WSing. Besides a LOT more activity with job abilities and physically moving all the time, THF also requires unbiased buffing and cooperation from party members. Sure, you can say the same for any job to perform optimally, but for a THF these things are really very pivotal. THFs seldom receive everything they need to perform optimally, and the result you get is a stigma based primarily on folks not understanding the bigger picture. It's not a cookie cutter job that can be set to be a DD on auto-pilot. It requires a lot of attention from the THF and from the other party members. You'd think after so many years of playing the game, more people would enjoy playing enabler to THFs (that goes for mages and melee alike), to get the most out of their THF, or at least to break up the monotony of the same old routines with the same old jobs.

Party members will get a lot more from their THF if they enable him/her. That's a better idea than never realizing theTHF's potential, and forever believing that THF are unable to keep pace with top tier DD. They are, if party members are willing to put in the effort, even if that requires "extra" effort for some folks. The yield you get from the THF job class is proportionate to the effort invested into it. Again, true for any job...Pivotal for THF. Note that difference when offering up "opinions".

It's good, but it's not great or awesome or omgwtfamazing, just simply good... if you have a good player.

So basically what sucks about Thief is that it doesn't have crutches to protect the stupid like Ridill-WAR and MNK do or GA-WAR/SAM/DRK/DRG got after the 2H patch?

Even with the advantage in the THF's favor on merits with colibri where they get a damage bonus, THF still can't out DD higher tier jobs and thus usually ends up on the sidelines.

The whole point people are trying to convey is that they *can* out DD "higher tier" jobs. The empirical fact that many of us have done it proves that much.

Is it common? No. That's why everyone admits that THF output is much more conditional on the player than any other job.

I almost always outparse *very* well geared 2H DD (DRK, SAM, GA WAR, DRG) with my Ninja in merits. Most of these people don't believe the parse when they see it; they go "But you only hit for a third of my damage and your WS suck!" But the math doesn't lie. Why do I win parses?

Because in merit situations the mobs are sufficiently weak enough that my pDIF and fSTR penalties using a one-handed weapon are far outweighed by the delay reductions I get given the quality of my gear. THF functions in much the same way. Because the mobs are not overly hard to hit (evasively or defensively), a well-geared and skilled THF will do very well because the environment is favorable to them.

The place where Thief has an actual and real handicap is HNMs. Because the damage formulas are curved speed wins out in merits, but flat damage wins in HNM. This is especially true because of how Mob TP works (we feed 8 TP to get 5, a SAM feeds 20 to get 17; this is the difference between 60 free TP and 18 free TP for the mob). This problem was aggravated by the ridiculous crutch that was the August 2007 update to 2H ftp and pDIF formulas. Honestly if SE is buffing 2H to compete in merits, they should buff 1H to compete in HNM (note I said buff 1H weapons, I didn't say buff the mechanics of dual wield. I am specifically thinking of situations like THF/WAR in HNM or BLUs on HNMs, not Ridill WARs)

But THF's performance in HNM is far from being atrocious if the THF knows what he is doing. My WS are only 200-300 less on Fafnir compared to SAMs, and I would blame a lot of that on the restrictions of Fafnir positioning: I have to use TA+WS which is a handicap to my DMG compared to SAMs getting Overwhelm which is a bonus.

You can say you outparsed a ridill warrior, a black belt monk, a relic samurai, or whatever, it's all the same and it's not representative of the whole. Give those same people either time to catch up in terms of gear, merits or playstyle and they'll beat you hands down the other 99% of the time.

A Ridill WAR, BB MNK, and Amanomurakumo SAM are pretty much the top of the grain from these so called "high tier" damage jobs. I fail to see how they need to catch up in gear, merits, or play style.

I mean shit if you are bringing the Relic Great Katana into this, you have to assume Relic Dagger as the appropriate counter-standard. And I would argue that is a better situation for THF because Mandau is a bigger increase over the best non-relic dagger than Amanomurakumo or Spharai are over their nearest non-relic competitors.

Moreover your logic since these players can't keep up with my THF that should mean WAR / MNK / SAM are bad.

We try to say we should evaluate THF based on the best rather than the marginal. Yet you you argue we should hold jobs to the potential and limits appropriate to the retards, and not appropriate to the actual job. But now when a WAR/MNK/SAM is the one losing the parse you blame the actual player not the job, and are trying to argue based on the (mathematical) merits of these jobs over THF.

That's not a fair standard. You can't argue that Ridill WARs are the best or BB MNKs are the best because they are mathematically superior, yet argue that THF are not the best based on your perceptions/experiences of bad THF rather than the mathematics.

If we go into mathematics, I will easily agree with you that Ridill WAR, BB MNK, and Relic SAM are all ludicrously strong. But I also believe, at least in a merit situation, a THF can be very close to that level: much better than your cookie-cutter 2H DD that relies on crutches. And if you are willing to grant Mandau as the standard of comparison (which again, is only fair since you introduce Amanomurakumo SAM), then honestly THF *is* within that upper echelon. Mandau lets you lay the biggest WS bombs all the while keeping the inherent advantages of Dual Wield (in a merit situation)

problem is a non-relic drg can outparse a mandau thf who otherwise has similar gear. I'll pull out some parses later if you want.

and here's the problem with the argument I just used, that same drg has outparsed ridillberk wars and BB mnks by much more than that mandau thf . The real problem is this idea that thf can't compete, it can, it might not always win but it can compete and be an effective member of a PT assuming they're an inteligent person with solid gear and the rest of the PT doesn't sabotage them.

until recently drg had the same problem. Even before the 2h buff it was possible for a well equiped drg to get close to ridillberk war damage(outside of colibri) by subbing war and using high jump/super jump to let the ridillberk wars tank but we were still "loldrg" untill SE buffed us like crazy so even the crappy drgs were decent.

Plenty of much needed logic

Thanks. Much of what you've said needed to be seen and is fact.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. THF with relic doesn't automatically make that THF great or even good. In that regard, the parse won't be necessary. If you feel like posting, include the THF's name and as many details about the PT as possible. However, when NON-Mandau THFs can compete very closely (nobody is saying totally anihilate or dominate, only to be very competetive) with various NON-relic WAR, MNK, SAM, DRG etc., it should be obvious that a Mandau THF worth his salt will at least be able to do the same.

Scratch the fact that we are comparing skilled players with skilled players. Compare a skilled player without a relic versus an obviously unskilled player with a relic. Yes, non-relic owners can beat relic owners in parses. That's not uncommon. Non-relic THFs have beaten other relic owning DD jobs as well. ;)
Posting parses of essentially taking candy from a baby doesn't exactly drive a point home.

Now, your bolded text, I couldn't agree more with. ^^

Really just my wyvern was the difference. One of the closest parses I've had over last year.

and since sneaky wanted to know more of the set up.

Dragod-war/nin (sort of average gear, axe/axe set up) no food, mostly there to voke for the brd.
Brianfist - thf/nin (mandau/blau, skaddi body and legs, homam hands, I think he was still missing homam feet and love torque, not sure what his ws gear was) used coeurl subs, barely used shadows to try and speed up attacks.
Bigherb- thf/nin (homam hands/legs/feet/body, I think blau/sirocco, had most of heca set) used Meat Mithkabobs
Tearsofadragon-brd march/min songs
Jakey drg/sam (ares body, ace's helm, love torque, homam feet/hands, no homam legs yet, heca head/hands/feet, used dusk legs) used Meat Mithkabobs, seigan mostly but used hasso when I lost hate and wasn't about to ws. Also this was before drakesbane.

A lot of people who play this game have insecurities about their job and feel it's their god-given duty to protect it. Every job in the entire game can outperform every other job, be it pup, thf, drg, cor, etcetc. The problem is that when you are inviting people you know literally nothing about, you're going to invite the person that you expect will perform the best. In terms of mediocrity, war is one of the few jobs that even if you're mediocre at it, your pt will still do fine. Thus, it's a popular job to invite for pickup merits. Now if I'm pting with friends (which is pretty much all I do anymore), then I'm more than happy to invite my thf, pup, etc friends because I know they will perform just fine. Rather than calling it laziness on people's part to invite the war over the thf that's seeking pt, call it what it really is, safety.

All the parses and debate in the world isn't going to make a pimped out thf get invites any faster than they do now (aside from friends inviting them) merely because other jobs like war and mnk are safer bets. I personally love thfs. I pted with bladewind on his thf recently while xping my rdm and just watching everything he did in the party was really awesome. It's funny how things like Collaborator are really underrated and underutilized (I think he's the only thf I've ever seen in an xp pt actually use it).

Bah can't see it from work, but I'll look later sometime. I'm a bit surprised since Brianfist is a good THF, but then again you're a good DRG. ^^
Being that is was very close, it's at least in alignment with what I said about it at least being very competetive.

To Rappa, I agree and don't think anyone debates that. I also like Collaborator. I'm not looking for THFs to get more invites, personally. They don't need the invites. They do need some respect for what they do and can do. You and others at least seem to understand that. Some folks don't, but what else is new?

last time i checked, brian had a pretty questionable as hell TP set.

PS : The whole first voke SATA is the most retarded damage technique I've ever seen in this game. The second one is skillchain in XP parties, especially with a THF, because they get 100% TP before any other DD and have to sit on their TP..

Depends on your setup.. like with colibri/lesser colibri what mid 50s-60s lvl parties, first voke someone WS then you sata and ws for distortion skillchain can effectively half the colibri's life if it doesnt get resisted and focus hate on the tank at the same time. But that only works if everyone's on the same page, can also get a little sloppy if the first WS isn't ready in the very beginning of battle.
