Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that the entire purpose of the rate-up/down system is so you can give your opinion about a post without actually having to post to say "I agree" or "I disagree"? I don't think people need to post a one-liner "I don't agree" when they don't agree with you. Thus, they rate you down and move on.

Good point, but my problem is if you are constantly going around rating down proponents of the thread and leaving a nonsense comment (i.e. like the one in Moink's sig) then it means youre just doing it to be malicious and annoying. hence the "if you dont like what you are reading gtfo and shut up about it" attitude about it. If i remember correctly Rappa, you told me the same on the "Mandau or man-dont" thread. What did I do? I ejected myself out of the thread after that because guess what.........you had a point! See where im going here?

And yet, some people do feel that very same need. It really kills me, too.

Nothing good comes of the rep system. A row of dots isn't worth all the drama. We should just get rid of the system altogether. I used to like it. It was a fun distraction. It's rapidly losing that quality. Every day there's more and more reputation abuse. QCDN is about holding conversations, and not about increasing your relative popularity amongst other members. If people hate me, they hate me. If they like me, they like me. It should be a decision left to each individual member. There will always be bandwagon haters and sycophants, but the reputation system makes it far to easy to pick sides. Get rid of the rep system and let individuals make up their own minds about a person's value. If a person wants to bash another person's post, let that person grow balls and post it publicly. Anonymity is the biggest curse of the internet, and it needn't be on QCDN. The flameboard is for flames. If there was someone I hated, and at the moment, I don't think there is, you wouldn't see me stalking the rep system. If I agree with a position, I should grow up and state as much. Get rid of the rep system and make people step out of the shadows and state their positions openly.

Or, do both. Use the rep system and state your opinions within the threads, but use each of them where they're best applied. Don't hide behind "lolz ur a fkin fukhed" or "sup <insert excessively insulting name here>" in a series of ratedowns, say why you agree or disagree with the post in a concise manner. If you have a strong enough opinion one way or the other on the subject matter, quote it, respond to it, agree or disagree, and move on.

18 of the 24 rate ups on my front page are from the flame board. That leaves 6 rate downs, only half of which are from the flameboard.

So let me get this straight, a 24:30 rates up/down ratio, and a 18:3 flameboard rate up and down ratio, = me sucking at flaming?

Sometimes there is just no reason for getting rated down, or none apparent to you at least. I guess that's where it'd be nice if the person who rated you down gave a constructive comment at least, so that you know what they thought differently of.

For example, I once got rated down for saying that MP+ gear can be used on RDM for convert so that you get extra MP after convert to cure yourself. I still don't know what's wrong with what I said till this day .... MP+ gear for convert, I'm doing it wrong???

However, I think we simply have to recognise that rate downs will happen and get on with it.... unless you want to have a rate down war with the person who rated you down.

And to tristam, it appears the problem comes from a differentiation in our opinions on the definition of "troll" so I understand now.

You feel trolling is someone rating you do not on the post but because you are you.

I feel something similar, but more of a "homes in on them in particular" IE if they saw my name in the latest post, they'd go in to see it so they could rate me down.

I don't have my 1337 subligar yet, I'm still in aqueducts trying to farm it. That was a particularly hurtful comment for that reason.

I laugh, because they keep saying the same stupid shit that's been said a million times before, or is wrong, or whatever. There's nothing new. There's no new speculation, it's been done. It's not even just a lack of experience, it's a lack of knowing what's already out there, or even just an intimate familiarity with game mechanics.
