Stossel on Global Warming

i found this video pretty intresting.

typical liberal thought process on global warming on display.

We are currently in a warming trend. It happens. That much is generally agreed upon.

Wrong, actually official U.S. government measurements show that the world's temperature has cooled a bit since reaching its most recent peak in 1998 over a decade ago. I know it's hard to believe when people, even my age, have been brainwashed since elementary school not to spray hair spray into the air because it will kill us all.....

Hence the phrase trend.

It is warmer than it was 100 years ago. This is part of a trend.

Climatology doesn't run in terms of decades, it runs in terms of centuries, something people on both sides of this debate tend to forget when it suits their purposes.

Eh, the Montreal Protocol was/is widely seen as one of the more effective international agreements.

This whole thread is kind of a joke tbh....just continue with the circle jerk, this is almost as retarded as debating evolution.

Yeah, Y2k real. Sarcasm? Nope, Y2k happened, obviously.

Y2K was real, it just wasn't an issue since no government, commercial, or private computer worth a damn was running on the hardware that was threatened by it. Unless your computers bios formatted date with two digit year stamps, there was no cause for alarm. And if it did, you should have got out of the fucking 70s.

To study global climate change in centuries is just as short sited as to look at it in decades. It runs in terms of millennia and for it to be a little cooler 100 years ago is not exactly some doomsday revelation considering we are still on the rebound from the last ice age we had 100,000 years ago.

Why do we focus so much on just the last 100 years? How intellectually dishonest can you be? Global warming nuts allege we have rapidly accelerated the warming of the planet but they IGNORE the fact that it has been getting COOLER for the last 12 years.

I don’t know about you but it doesn’t seem very logical to me that the industrial revolution has allegedly caused the temperature to rise so dramatically over the past 100 years. If you consider developing nations like China and India are actually pumping double the junk into the air than they were a decade ago and the rest of the world hasn’t scaled back any, shouldn’t it be getting exponentially warmer not COOLER as we exponentially pollute the air?

/shrug, I sometimes forget how pointless it is to debate with you.

Anyhoo.

Personally I have significant doubts about anthropogenic global warming. While it has at least some minor foundation in science, an awful lot of the current theory is rampant speculation based on extremely limited evidence, coupled with questionable associations and selective massaging of numbers.

Then again, the massaging of numbers is hardly unique to the global warming advocates.

I rank it as "Possible, but unlikely", which oddly enough has little bearing on my personal support of the movement towards renewable/non-fossil fuel energy.

/shrug, I know its tough to argue with facts.

Anyhoo.

I too support renewable energy if not for the simple fact that A) eventually we're going to run out of oil and unless we start now developing viable alternatives in 100 years we're going to screwed, badly and B) look at where the money we spend on oil goes, the Middle east? Venezuela? The sooner we stop making these places rich the better off we'll all be.

Carefully selected, carefully massaged, often not-really-facts-at-all facts.

Yes, it is tough to argue with those.

Since, y'know, anyone who believes them is pretty much going to be believing them no matter what they're told.

But anyway.

I too support renewable energy if not for the simple fact that A) eventually we're going to run out of oil and unless we start now developing viable alternatives in 100 years were going to screwed badly and B) look at were the money we spend on oil goes, the Middleast? Venezuela? The sooner we stop making these places rich the better off we'll all be.

That's part of it.

Another part is that not only are we arguably at or past peak oil, there are several burgeoning economies who are desperate to match the standard of living enjoyed by the 1st world, and as a consequence, if we don't cut our resource usage significantly, there simply will not be enough to go around.

And, as a general rule, when you present groups of humans with limited resources and unlimited desires, those groups tend to fight over the resources, rather than restrict their desires.

Screw running out of oil in 100+ years, we may well face wars over control of that oil within 50. Real wars, not one-sided curb stompings like the Gulf Wars.

India and China, as I am sure you are all aware, are on the rise and do not yet have that many automobiles on the road. This will change, and alone each of them easily has the potential to quickly have more cars on the road than the U.S. You can make the case that the planet is warming up on its own, that we are cooling, blah blah, but you can't argue that doubling (or more) our emissions will have an effect. Maybe the effects aren't as bad as some of the more hardcore environmentalists make it out to be, but if we continue to increase our emissions at some point it will effect things. Even if we are just seeing a natural climate change, you can't argue that the ecosystem is pretty delicate. At some point, even if our impact is small in relation to other things, that additional poison in our atmosphere (that is not natural no matter how you cut it) will make an obvious difference.

I do like (at least in theory) our current administration's push for us to become more energy independent and they seem to recognize the private sector is where this will likely happen. It ties in with everything...like you all point out shipping billions of dollars to other countries for oil is not a practice we can or should want to continue. Car that runs on water please...

zoolander i don't think anyone here doesn't think we have an impact on the enviroment, the issue is, that certian people are painting this big doomsday picture, while at the same time raking in money hand over fist, and trying to get new taxes placed on pretty much every form of product or energy production. this tends to make people suspicious.

You've got al gore up in Copenhagen saying his scientist, a Dr Wieslav Maslowski, says theres a 75% chance that the entire artic icecap will be gone in 5 years, while within hours Dr.Maslowski comes out saying he doesn't know where gore got that number, and that he said no such thing.

The leaked emails from the cru show a concerted effort to both manipulate numbers to show a greater warming, and PURGE anyone that raises questions.
They outright delete data when demanded under freedom of information, and make sure that noone that questions their take on global warming cant get "peer reviewed".

all of which tends to make people a bit more apprehensive about passing massive new tax increases all to "prevent global disaster" or w/e.

and then to cap it off, you got people making comments like your previous post, as tho anyone that raises questions, is some flat-earther or something. people are taking a very UNscientific approach to something that is completely about science.

also theres a big difference between stimulating growth of green jobs and technology in the private sector, and what they are trying to do.

what they are trying to do is tax every bit of energy used, produced, every product made, they are trying to place outright CAPS on energy production and even hooking peoples homes up to "smart grids" so that they will have control over how much energy YOU use. and you got libs suggesting the same for cars, so that they can control how you drive. and now even talks of population control at Copenhagen.

excuse me if i don't want these people making the decisions on how to deal with climate change.

theres a big difference between incentivizing a transition to cleaner more renewable energy and more responsible energy use, and outright FORCING it.

humans as a whole..cars..factories...everything...equal less then 5% of green house gases.

volcano's are the real evil of the world..if only we could tax them

Sorry bro, that stupid rumor you heard about volcanoes isn't really true. Should talk about water vapor, not fucking volcanoes. I can't believe that notion is still around.

This, PLUS, volcanoes, water vapour and ALL the other greenhouse gases are there already. We're the ones pumping the extra C02 into the atmosphere, and that's why this is the issue. Hiding behind "there's more water vapour in the atmosphere than CO2" is invalid because we're not the ones pumping the water vapour into the atmosphere, and we have no influence over it.

you must really love al gore..

pretty sure volcanoes create water vapor toooooo...bro!

all im saying is this planet has been here a long long long long time...and its pretty convenient that al gore stands to make a large profit from these green friendly items.

i could only imagine how our country would of turned out if we had to follow the same regulations they want to put on developing countries like india

TAX BREATHING.
SANCTION VOLCANOES.
GLOBAL WARMING ATE MY BABY.

etc.

I do love me some John Stossel, I was mad happy when FBN picked him up. Imus AND Stossel? Jawesome.

you forgot, Outlaw eating meat.
and only 1 child per family.

I mean, SOMEONE has to control every aspect of our daily lives to save the planet from ourselves right?

was in a rush this morning but

to say humans dont have an effect on the environment would be stupid..

but before i thought about the idea of global warming i saw the person pulling the strings...
mr preaches that we're killing the planet..but enjoys his private jet and consuming 20 times the avg households electric usage..but its okay because the earth takes visa. huge fucking hypocrite..

are you going to trust a vet thats wearing fur? probably not...

heres a fun list..

I love the way that the "resolution" offered in the videos and accepted by most is ignorance. Not all problems are "made up schemes" to get your money, this is the real world, and sometimes there are problems that we need to address. There's only so much you can say "fuck Al Gore" to.

The 7 videos in the OP have just confirmed to me that these people believe denial is the best option in solving serious problems, and denial is the nicest word I can find to describe it. Ignorance is probably closer to the case, because the video shows that they believe you should pay no attention to people "WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT" (scientists, climatologists) and tell yourself "there is no problem, it's just a money making scheme, close your eyes and keep damaging the earth."

It's all fine and well to sit and say "Global Warming" is a myth, but it's not. Whether or not you think it should be called Global Warming or something different is irrelevant - the earth's temperature is increasing, and will continue to do so (not over 1 year, or 10 years, so you can stops saying stupid things like "over the last 10 years, the temperature has decreased!) on average over a longer period of time, and we're the cause of it. The world has hot and cold periods, correct. The world isn't supposed to warm up year upon year at the rate that it is. Progressing technology and industrial development are not to blame - lazy, ignorant people like the people in this video are the reason, spreading a message to the sheep who hang on their every word that "there's no problem, you're model citizens!".

okay, well you seem to understand global warming pretty well...please explain the whole thing..and how it works. details aswell..
could you also explain to me how reducing co2(a very small part of our atmosphere) is going to fix our planet?

since you clearly didnt read the list
2) Man-made carbon dioxide emissions throughout human history constitute less than 0.00022 percent of the total naturally emitted from the mantle of the earth during geological history.
17) The science of what determines the earth’s temperature is in fact far from settled or understood.
33) Today’s CO2 concentration of around 385 ppm is very low compared to most of the earth’s history – we actually live in a carbon-deficient atmosphere

heres a real fun one
8) The IPCC theory is driven by just 60 scientists and favorable reviewers not the 4,000 usually cited.

why should i believe these global warming pros when they already fudged their facts...they lose creditability..and thats really all a scientist has. how about you go read some facts instead of spouting off at the mouth like you have a clue whats going on

where did that quote come from "there's no problem, you're model citizens!" because im pretty sure you made it up..and you arnt suppose to quote things that arnt real!!

is the earth heating up? sure is. has it been warming then it is now? sure has...are we well within our range ...sure are..

wonder how you feel about sun spots. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_variation
