So, boss calls me today. Says I violated company policy because I brought my laptop and ethernet cord and tried to connect to the companys servers so I could surf web/FFXI to kill some time (We had a carpet cleaning done at the store. I was there from 4pm-1am..)

Got to regional managers attention and they asked me why I wasn't doing "aisle stuff". Fuck that. If I am there until 1am..I'm not doing store stuff. I'm doing shit I need to get done.

And besides, the carpets were soaked with shampoo..I can't walk on that shit anyway.

Dumb policies.

You were there during time that they were paying you to be there, but you don't want to do things they want you to do and are paying you to do? And you think THEY'RE wrong?

You've got to be kidding. That's more than likely a blatant violation of your company's IT Security and Usage Policy. I can just about imagine you signed it upon your hire date, and was probably in the large amount of "useless paperwork" that you just slapped a signature on without actually reading.

Reason 1 why it's a bad idea to FFXI at work:

Bandwidth costs money.

Reason 2, and probably more important:

They're paying you to get their shit done, not to get your online e-gearz.

I'm surprised they didn't fire you.

I press my luck at work by bringing my laptop and connecting to my personal email, but I have it OK'd through my own managing line.

see at my job i think they have a dumb policy, you could get shot, your mom could die, you could be hanging by the thread of life in the hospital, but if you were scheduled to work that day you WILL be written up, and if its the last write up they need to fire you, your fired.
Doctors notes are not excuses to them, Its just a reason why you cant work, so you will get wrote up even with a doctors note.
I have gone to the ER twice this year on days i worked, Once for massive chest pains, which turned out to be a serious illness that can affect the heart and can kill me, I got wrote up, my job was threatened.
I was attacked by an animal that had no shots, i was bitten and lost alot of blood, Got badly infected and had no time to get to the ER because of fear of losing my job, I worked one handed till i couldnt take the pain anymore.
Doctor said i shouldnt work the rest of the week, gave me a note, employer said "you will be written up for every day you dont work that you were scheduled, doctors note or not " which meant id be fired in the end.
Now THATS a dumb policy for a major corporation to have.

What you did, was blatantly in the wrong on your end, not their policy.

That's illegal in Canada, where the heck do you work? O.o

You should start reading your state employment laws then. I know that in South Carolina, it's "at will" employment, meaning either the employer or the employee can terminate the job of the employee at will without cause. It's silly to be sure, but most employers here have more common sense than to just fire someone simply because they don't like the employee; the point is that they (the employer) could.

That is a silly policy in place, and the only place I could see it working and being legal is a place like a halfway house or an employer who predominantly hires ex-convicts or recovering drug addicts; neither of which I think you are?

I wasn't happy when my workplace cracked down on having coffee/soda/anything but water on the job. It would never even cross my mind to try and play Fallout 3 or something on the clock.

If your on the clock, you do whatever they tell you to do, complaining cuz you got in trouble forplaying ffxi while your at work... now thats lol

Yeah. You all have valid points but I mean come on. I was there only to be there. The carpet guy was there to shampoo the store and go over with another coat. This was a 7 hour process and while he was doing that I was told to stay out of his way. Looking back, I do remember the general manager doing some web surfing so I didn't think it was a big deal

I work at Meijer in Ohio, And they claim one of their core values is "familyness" Now, I have never once felt like most of the stuff they do is what Family would do.
I called off because my house flooded, i lost alot of un replaceable family photos and sentimental items, My manager knew this but preceeded to tell me "its always something with you, Im just gonna hire someone else"
she did hire two other people after that.
The time before that was the E.R. visit, I called on my way there to tell her i was heading to the E.R. because i was having very bad chest pains to which she said "Thats just great, thanks alot, this is ridiculous".
Before that i was going through my seperation with my wife, I was an emotional wreck, i didnt go home for the weekend and i had the weekend off, i didnt wanna be around people so i stayed at my friends apartment while he worked and bawled my eyes out, called off in tears and she makes it even worse and has me crying on the phone and keeps on going.

What "Family" makes you feel worse in hard times?

i dunno, i know alot of their workers are seeking other jobs because it just seems like its all money for them, and im trapped there because of the economy and it taking me almost a year of seeking to get this job.

All this is in place because its what the employees signed up for with the union contract, They must not have read it?

Surfing the web and playing an MMO while on company time are two completely different animals.

While surfing the web for personal reasons while on the clock is also against many company IT policies, it kinda falls under that "well, most everyone does it anyway, so we'll turn a blind eye". Playing solitaire, or FreeCell, etc, are about the same.

An MMO though, is just right out. There is no "come on". The carpet guy was there to shampoo a carpet, and you were being paid to tend to him and make sure he was doing *his* job.

wow you call off a lot.

You go to work to work and not play games. lol

Procter & Gamble has the unofficial company policy "the solution to pollution is dilution." This refers to the fact that state & national laws punish pollution by parts per million and not total numbers, so when you want to pollute just dilute it! I know this isn't the same kind of policy you are talking about, was pretty /shocking to me when I heard it though.

Meijer unions are bullshit. Anyone that relies on them for support are fools.

Also, at my old office job in Southfield, we had a policy that, in the summer women were not allowed to wear peep-toe shoes because our HR manager had a lot of sympathy for anyone with a foot fetish. Namely because he had one.

Foot fetishes are just... creepy.

Don't tell Quentin Tarantino. His movies are full of foot fascination. I have to wonder how many times he rubbed one out while watching Uma Thurman try to wiggle her toes in Kill Bill.

Here's a "dumb" policy: My dad is a Baltimore City Fire Fighter. He's in the Union. The Union can't strike if the City shits on them.

I understand the reasons for avoiding a strike from Fire Fighters or Police Officers. People die if they don't do their jobs.

Just a quick note to say that not all Meijer stores are that bad. Not all of them are union either. I work in a non-union Meijer in Indiana and my store does tend to feel like family. I've been working at that store for 8 years now and never really had a problem calling in...and I work in the service department (mostly at the understaffed service desk). Granted, I do get written up when I do call in (and I never have a doctor's note), but if you don't call in all that frequently, it's really not that big of a deal.
