That's right, I have a mighty need to flame Summoning Skill....

Out of all the things in the game that I've encountered over the last year, NOTHING infuriates me more than capping my summoning skill. I've been pretty good about keeping this fucker capped but after suffering through the nest the last couple of weeks, I've fallen behind....WAY BEHIND!!!

I'm currently at 125 and I need to be 132 at my current level...."Well that's not so bad" you may be saying to yourself..

IT IS!! I can blow through a bar of 753 MP, averaging about 7-14 MP per summon and not get 0.1 skill up. Like what the fuck? I've summoned for over 4 hours (Pet...release...pet...release...pet...release  ) and not capped it. This is fucking stupid!! What the hell was SE Thinking? I used to play a RDM and sitting there capping my enhancing skill wasn't nearly this bad..

Nevermind the stupid comments I get while standing outside doing it.
"Summon Bahamut"
"Do you have fenrir?"
"Show off"

Yeah....I really enjoy sitting here for 7 hours hitting the same damn buttons over and over...

I need a T-shirt that says "I'd rather be Killing Stuff"

Summong skill licks monkey scroach...

"Showoff"

That's so ridiculous. Anyone that either doesn't know or can't puzzle out what you're doing when they see you sitting there summoning repeatedly is a freaking choad.

This is the reason my smn is level 6...lmfao I worked for two days ( at level 6 mind you...how fucking high could the cap be) and STILL didn't cap it...eh fuck it...I'd rather have my eyes gouged with hot pokers. But good luck to ya!

Yeah...I love my job though and try to play it as best as I can, meaning I like to have a capped summoning skill. I would even love to get enough cash together to pick up a Himmel's stock but the only way I think I could do this is BCNM40...Apperantly I am the suck when it comes to BCNM (Summoners in general).

Yeah...level 6 summoning skill cap is 21. Formula for figuring out what your cap is (level) x 3 + 3 = Skill Cap [/b]

What does summoning Skill do? My summoner is lvl 3 with no intrest of taking it any higher. To me it seems like a gimped WHM until you hit mid 20s+ and as a WHM I never wish to go through that again.

Level 25 is where I found the job to really pick up...unless you solo worms until 25 you do end up healing a lot up until that point. I thought it was well worth it in the end though and love playing my job.

Calling a summoner a gimped WHM is like calling a WAR a gimped tank.

A summoner is capable of keeping a party alive with cure spells and a large MP pool, but you're really missing out if you force them to do this. Just like WARs, (after level 30 mind you...) They can tank but also have a lot of other great tools at their disposal. They are more than just a "gimped tank" the same as summoners which are more than a "gimped WHM"

Summoning skill apparently increses the damage/defense/accuracy of your avatars. This is just a rumor but after playing the job for a while, I tend to believe it. Especially after doing a solo avatar battle w/o capped smn skill and the others with...

I was always under the impression (Probaly due to partying with very crappy summoners who rarely had more then Carbuncle and earth/air spirit) that they had no "usefull" Summon abilities until the mid 20s. Again when I say gimped I am also refering to the lack of Barfira, Cure II, and shellra in the dunes, both of which I view to be critical. Pugils need Cure II for screwdriver, and gobbies require shellra and barfira. They are not needed but they make life far easier. As a back uphealer they are great, far better then RDM, but thier are some WHM abilities that can not be replaced. This again is probaly due to WHM predjudice and bad experiences.

No summoners can not replace WHMs...why? Because we're not WHMs, we're Summoners. Qufim shouldn't be an issue for a summoner, as any good summoner would have all the avatars (except fenrir, if you have him, even better!) at their disposal. Using Ramuh's Thunder II or Shiva's Ice II on the crabs and Pugils helps for damage. When you hit 25 you should be using Aerial Armor and backup healing. Being a WHM you should ask for a summoner in the group whenever you can. We can take the damage the tanks take waaaaaay down and backup heal between BPs, allowing you to save your mp and not be in the akward situation of not having enough MP to have an EXP chain over 2. (I know how akward this can be after playing my whm...i feel like it's my fault @_@).

If you're playing with Summoners in Qufim that only have Carbuncle and a few spirits, you are playing with crap summoners. Just like if I were playing with a WHM in qufim who didn't have Cure II....it doesn't mean the class sucks, just the individual :?

To be fair, a LOT of jobs aren't that great until post 20. And that's generally because you don't find people who can PLAY them WELL as often in the dunes than post 20.

What about the thief pre-15? Honestly, the damage they do is very minimal. I felt embarassed when I see myself hitting for 0 more than twice in a row. I don't bother judging the jobs anymore because it's generally the people behind the jobs that can make it work. Honestly, no one is going to accept a summoner into a party in the dunes as the main healer. No one can replace a whm in the dunes. They are gold in a party.

HIgher up, they're great with their blinking and stoneskin buffing. They can pull, use their summons to do damage, skillchain. I wouldn't say gimped whm. If anything, with how a rdm always enfeebs a mob (when they get a chance), a summoner buffs up the party with more than just the typical protect/shell. When you expect a whm to be the main healer, you kind handicap their other abilities.

Honestly, I dread anytime I have to level in the dunes and don't expect much. I basically write off any bad experience I have there.

I often hear it said that ariel armor is gained at 25. Is this just learned automatically at 25 or is it tied to summoning skill, similiar to a WS? I definitely feel bad for Smn and leveling summoning skill. I know as a high 50's blm, Im usually 9-10k xp into a level before my elemental/dark magic skills are recapped. So I REALLY feel for any summoner at this level. Maybe change it up? Try farming crawlers for silk using avatars to melee. I know it's not the greatest idea in the world, but at least it's different.

Summoner abilities are autmaticall learned at the appropriate level...but I think the Summoning skill increases the accuracy and damage of these Blood pacts. Also, if you melee with your summons I think it increases damage/defense/accuracy of normal hits....Who knows :?

In an interview with SE designers, they asked what Summoning Magic skill did. Response was something to the tune of "Interruption rate of summons and spirits, and casting time of spirits."

Ever since I read that, I stopped putting any kind of constant effort into raising the skill. I haven't noticed any discernable changes in avatar accuracy, strength, blood pacts, etc with the +7 I've gotten from Austere gear, nor the 5 levels I skilled it up when I was bored. Everything seems to hinge on the SMN's level, nothing else.

But again, I could be wrong - and if anyone can give me concrete proof that the skill affects my avatars, I'll spend weeks upon weeks doing nothing but summoning to cap it.

I did notice a change in carbuncle before and after I capped my SMN skill when I did my Solo avatar battles. The way I see it is, It can't hurt the job to have it capped, it can only help it. :D

for the mini-avatar fights, capping it is key, after taht I didn't notice it helping a lot.

Hehe, I remember when I very first started playing, venturing out into Ronfaure for bunny murder, asking myself wtf was with the guys by the gates always summoning the same thing over and over, wondering if they were showing off or what.

One thing I've noticed about summon skill when leveling it is that it actually goes up pretty quickly.....until you get within 3-5 levels of the cap for your job level. I fell about 13 levels behind the cap when I leveled from 38-41 in a single session, and got it back up to within 5 or so in just a few hours.

Cubswoo, I saw that interview too and I'm thinking they only gave a partial answer. I've noticed minute differences in avatar ability when I was pretty far behind after that session I mentioned above, and when I nearly had it capped again. The avatars seem to be able to last a bit longer and have a little more accuracy. Haven't noticed any increase in melee damage, so I think that's based on the summoner's level.
