ROMULUS, Mich. - Nigerian man who said he was an agent for al-Qaida tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane Friday as it was preparing to land in Detroit, but travelers who smelled smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers rushed to subdue him, the passengers and federal officials said.

British officials on Saturday were searching the last known address of the suspect, who was thought to be an engineering student at University College London, one of the United Kingdom's leading universities, according to Sky News.

Flight 253 with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard was about 20 minutes from the airport when passengers heard popping noises, witnesses said. At least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man. Shortly afterward, the suspect was taken to the front of the plane with his pants cut off and his legs burned, a passenger said. Law enforcement officials said the burns indicated the explosive was strapped to his legs.

One U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

"It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," said Peter Smith, a traveler from the Netherlands. "First there was a pop, and then (there) was smoke."

Smith said a passenger sitting opposite the man climbed over people, went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. Syed Jafri, another passenger, said he saw a glow and smelled smoke. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," said Jafri. Smith said the heroic passenger appeared to have been burned.

Peter said that while he was leaving the plane, he looked at where the man had been sitting and saw a pillow that seemed to have been burned. Melinda Dennis, who was seated in the front row of the plane, said the man involved was brought to the front row and seated near her. She said his legs appeared to be badly burned and his pants were cut off. She said he was taken off the plane handcuffed to a stretcher.

Flight 253 began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit, said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel. It did not specify what those were.

It's a Christmas miracle no one was killed. Too bad they didn't opt to toss him off the plane before it landed. When is Obama going to stop pussyfooting around and finish off these scumbags once and for all? (Retorical question, the answer is obviously never.)

cause dubya really did a bang up job of it don'tcha know

even though it was a retorical question, you are still ignorant for answering it yourself

How would they even be able to toss him off the plane? It poses several problems. Some of which comes to mind;

  1. Where would they toss him off?
  2. How would they even be able to get free sight of the outside without endangering the other passengers?
  3. A normal airship security door has several tons of force pushing on it while in the air, preventing forcefully opening it during flight.

The breed of terrorist you get these days is sorely lacking. "Shoe bombs" and firecrackers. /sigh

If he had detonated it in the airplane bathroom it might have actually managed to do something?

Judging from the "severe" burn his legs suffered, I doubt he woulda done more than set off the smoke alarms. Heh, hope the bastard loses his legs in the process.

Sadly, I thought the same exact thing. Something tells me people whose goal in life is to be a suicide bomber aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

Of course. You think they are going to blow up the smart people?

It´s not that they´re not going to blow up the smart people, but that smart people usually don´t want to blow themselves up.

And as a result of all this, they decide to treat passangers like prisoners.

Brilliant plan, dipshits.

where've you been? they've been treating passengers like prisoners for years, they just now passed that shit that says they can't keep us on a plane for over 3 hours.

The bomb didn't go off properly. If he had had some time alone by himself in the bathroom he could have double checked the bomb before exploding it.
Oh and all electronics are banned on cross continental flights now.

My best friend does some work with air marshals and now they're all flying for the holidays. He's pissed because the Homeland Security secretary is claiming that this incident proves the system works--AFTER the incident. They're saying now that the bomb could've done some damage if the guy hadn't been a retard.

So now we can't play DS or listen to an iPod on a cross-country flight because of one wannabe terrorist and the security systems falling on their face, again? Gee, thanks TSA!

i just got off a flight from puerto rico to atlanta and their new rules are retarded. For the final hour of the flight we were not allowed to leave our seat and were told that there was an airmartial or w/e on board that was there to make sure that no one left their seats... Also for the final hour there were no electronics, no restroom, they disabled the in seat entertainment things and they collected all drinks.

Whats funny is that in that hour i was sitting there i realized that if i really wanted to do something to the plane... i had the means to. Since i was flying straight home decided to visit the duty free store in the airport which is on the inside of security and i bought 2 large bottles of grey goose. I could have very easily poured them out and created a very large fire in a short amount of time...

Truthfully this problem wont be fixed until the government gets out of the way and lets private entities handle it again... The TSA is a train wreck.

They don't have an administrator. The GOP is blocking Obama's nominee because Jim DeMint is more afraid of TSA employees forming a union than he is of terrorism.

Yeah dude, having an admin magically makes every government program efficent!

I don't think blowing up passenger planes will ever work again like it did for 9/11, especially not if the terrorists keep trying it. Until people forget about it, any attempt at terrorism will result in fellow passengers tackling culprits to the ground. It's been the case for every attempted hijacking/destruction since the planes that hit the WTC. Even the 4th plane in 9/11 had passengers fighting back, and that was the only plane of the bunch where the passengers had knowledge of what happened in NYC. From now on, every plane will have a few heroes on it. The shoe bomber was taken out. This guy was taken out. I think the terrorists aught to find something else. Like practical jokes, surprise attacks only really work the first time, at least when in fairly quick succession.

The only reason this guy were taken out was because his bomb malfunctioned. Had this terrorists underwear bomb actually worked properly no one on the plane would have been able to stop him. I commend the heroes for jumping the guy after the fact, I definitely would have too, no question, but that's not what saved them and I wouldn't count on that as some kind of deterent either.
