Terrorist tries to blow up plane over Detroit.

They don't have an administrator. The GOP is blocking Obama's nominee because Jim DeMint is more afraid of TSA employees forming a union than he is of terrorism.

One of the worst things that could happen with the TSA would be if they had means to form a union. Hell, look how poorly functional the TSA is and has been for the longest time now. Give them the security of a union and it'd be even worse.

The only reason this guy were taken out was because his bomb malfunctioned. Had this terrorists underwear bomb actually worked properly no one on the plane would have been able to stop him. I commend the heroes for jumping the guy after the fact, I definitely would have too, no question, but that's not what saved them and I wouldn't count on that as some kind of deterent either.

As fucked up as it sounds, a couple of bodies on top of an explosive device would dampen the effect of the blast, since the energy released would be absorbed by said bodies. Add on to that, the fact that its strapped to ANOTHER body, would only help lessen the effect of the blast. So yes, a few people jumping the guy would help lessen the blast, and in turn, save the lives of others on the plane.

A plane's a fragile piece a machinery. I doubt that a few people piling on top of the bomb would be enough to prevent the plane from having a major malfunction, if not still ending the same way as planned.

Depends on the direction of the blast really. If allowed to blow close to the wall, i.e. window seat as khajit said, then yeah theres still a good chance enough damage will be done to cripple, if not destroy the plane. However if muffled enough, or if the leftover energy goes in a different direction, the chance of survival still stands.

I'm pro-union, so we'll have to disagree on that point.

I've been highly amused watching conservatives wail in terror of these Muslim supermen and blaming Obama for being soft. Dick Cheney slithered out of his cave to mock the president for treating this schmuck the same way he and Bush treated the shoe bomber idiot. That hypocrisy must taste good, because they keep spooning out huge servings of it.

I think it's a decent deterrent. 9/11 worked as well as it did because the expectations of a plane hijacking were for the plane to land and the hostages negotiated. That's why nobody fought back, and in that case, all the bad guys had were knives. That'll never be the case again. The harder the terrorists have to work to hide their explosives, the more prone to malfunction they'll end up being. Between heightened, albeit seemingly incompetent airport security, and the fact that plane passengers are going to take justice into their own hands, the terrorists can no longer bring reliable weapons/bombs with them to carry out their jobs. We might see lots of botched attempts, but never the same one twice, and eventually, the means of sneaking an explosive on a plane will be so convoluted, I don't imagine it'll be worth the effort. Unfortunately for terrorists, the most reliable explosives are the easiest to detect. Another perk of that, is that every failed attempt is negative PR towards the recruitment of other suicide bombers. Detonating a plane full of infidels might land you 70 virgins, but failure will just land you HIV and a lot of anal sex.

Incase you didn't notice, none of the "security measures" do anything to stop that guy's method of bombing. It's easily possible to repeat that attempt.
Also have you considered that fact that by the point it becomes "impossible" to bomb airplanes they could go after other targets and the airplane industry would collapse due to people using a mode of travel that doesn't involve anal probes or security guards seeing you naked?
Hell the security guards already see you naked in some airports thanks to the scanners in some of em.

They did, though. The security measures stopped him from carrying a reliable bomb. My point wasn't arguing that security discovered the bomb and stopped him from getting on board. It was that because security keeps getting better, the bombs the terrorists are forced to use are getting more and more unreliable. They can't use the same bomb twice, because security learns from each attempt. They've already used up the good bombs. The more complicated the setup and detonation process, the less likely the bomber is going to succeed. Security is having a positive effect, just not in the way we'd expect.

I think security will adapt to this bomb attempt like they did for 9/11, for the shoe bomber, and for the shampoo bombers. You didn't have to remove your shoes till after the shoe bomber, and you could transport liquids no problem before the shampoo bombers. I don't know exactly what will change now, but if we end up being forced to squat and defecate into a plastic bin for examination at airport security lines, in the coming weeks, we'll know it's for a good cause.

No they didn't. HIS lack of TRAINING stopped him from being able to properly USE the fully functional bomb he had.
If a hijacker tried to steal a plane and cant get on the plane because he didn't wake up in time to catch the plane that doesn't mean that airport security is what stopped the hijacking. The hijacker forgetting to wake up is what prevented it.

Seriously, Play-Doh? Come on you fucktard, yes, confiscate at your discretion, but shit, this is a typical American family coming back from a Christmas vacation WITHIN the USA, just what the hell is your problem? Tryin to make up for your co-workers faux pas a few weeks ago? These idiots seriously are in need of some training.

In the comments under the article, a lot of people are for racial profiling. It seems like a bad idea in principle, but it might be a good idea in reality. Let's face it, we're not getting attacked by Utah Mormons. There's a relatively small racial and a very small religious profile of nearly the entirety of our threat. The government keeps saying this isn't a war on Islam, but, it really is. Not all Islam, to be certain, but a very prominent minority of it. If we're going to win, we've gotta drop the political correctness and recognize the enemy for what it really is. "Terrorism" isn't a very helpful portrait of our enemy. "Militant Islamic Terrorism" is. The number of travelers is too great to warrant completely random screening, or equal screening for all. Stop thinking like kindergarden teachers and start thinking like casino executives. They know how to stock the odds in their favor. If we focus on the target demographics, we're more likely to nab actual bad guys rather than confiscate a kid's playdough. In the event middle class American toddlers start hijacking planes, then we can adapt our strategy accordingly.

Actually that's a bit incorrect. The only religious aspect of the motive on the Muslim side of things is that the terrorists happen to be Muslim. here's a video that uses actual statements the terrorist in charge of sept 11 himself gave concerning his reason which strangely enough doesn't mention religion at all. You can even easily get the Pdf of the statement online which i shall link to as well.

Pdf link. http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/FTRIALS/moussaoui/sheikhstmt.pdf
Given the fact that an important aspect of the Sept 11 terrorism is attention whoring(such as going for more prominent targets instead of a body count) it seems unlikely that they would lie about their motivations when committing acts to draw attention to their motivations as I can see people will probably claim.
Oh and here's a Wikipedia link about the Ally Whom The terrorist claim is their motivation behind the bombings committing a large scale operation to commit terrorism against the US and UK in order to blame it on another country which as in the middle of peace talks with said ally.
The masterminds behind this terror plot were given medals of honor in March 2005 for Attempting to commit a terrorist attack vs the US.

EDIT: oh yeah and war against Arabs? The Us has enough of them to be considered an Arab nation. There are 9 million Muslim/Arabic people in the USA whom have never Thought about blowing up a plane, Hate terrorists, and "love America." You are confusing reality with action movies and other media wherein All muslims are evil and contemplating terrorist plots as we speak. There are tons of people whom aren't Islamic that commit terrorism like Timothy McVeigh, the unabomber, and others.

In one of the only times you will ever hear me playing devil's advocate for the TSA, plastic explosives can look like play-doh.

Film at 11.

You can also make play doh out of flour and misc junk so it's easily replaceable. In retrospect they might realize atm that bringing something on a plane which stereotypically looks like bomb making materials is a bad idea.

No shit, lol. Homemade Play-Doh (sorry, Play Dough since the other's an IP infringement) is more fun anyway; fun to make, and you can make it in an infinite amount of colors.

Back on topic - the mom was a dumbshit for not telling her son "no, you cannot take Play-doh on the airplane. Here, have a Rubik's cube instead".

On the other side of things I've never heard of a terrorist having their kid as collateral damage ever so assuming that the kid could be a terrorist is equally stupid.

During the Vietnam War, the VC effectively forced children to US/South Vietnamese soldiers asking for food, shelter, etc, or offering hugs. Upon achieving close proximity to the soldiers, the children would drop live grenades into their bags or pockets.

Their own kids or random ones?
Grenades also aren't as explosive as Hollywood makes them look appear too so the damage would be localized to the soldier in general.
(still a nasty thing to do)

If the soldier was staying next to his Jeep or truck as he was instructed to do, the damage could be considerable (say, if the blast reached the fuel tank).

Random kids, but you still get the idea.
