Anyone who has, or used to play Magic: The Gathering will immediately know what I'm talking about. For those that didn't, let me define it:
Barn: A player who attaches themselves to a hull, hoping to gain fame and recognition through association and proximity.
Hull: A player, normally high-level, who make themselves open to newer or lower-level players with the intent to use them.
The Barn/Hull relationship is somewhat symbiotic. The barn attaches themseleves to the hull when the hull takes care of something for them (e.g. holding their hand through Rank 5, killing the DRG job quest dragon, getting their Genkai 1 items.) The barn, seeing a juicy hull, lets everyone know that their hull is such a wonderful person, and they'll help you with anything, and Christ was reborn in their image, et cetera. Firmly planted on the hull, the barn will do most anything to defend their meal ticket. Any negative comments are immediately refuted. Any mistakes are forgiven. And they will do anything - ANYTHING - to keep their hull. In the Magic world, it was moreso a "Get me a soda" or "Can I borrow cards for this deck?" It's slightly different in XI, though. For example:
Hull: Hey, I'm leveling my (insert low level job,) and I need (insert equipment.) Can you (buy/loan) me yours?
Barn: Sure! No problem! Let me go (buy/send) that to you right away!
This, in and of itself, is not really a problem. But when you confront someone else's barn, especially in an XP situation.
Person X: You know, you really shouldn't do (tactic X.) It's hurting our XP.
Barn: Well (hull) is level (high-level) and they told me this was the way to do it, and they're higher level than you so STFU!
Person X: Is (Barn's job) their high level job?
Barn: No, they're (Hull's job.)
Person X: So what do they know about (Barn's job?)
Barn: STFU N00B (Hull) IS ALWAYS RIGHT GOD I HATE FAGS LIKE YOU GOODBYE LOSERS
Attaching yourself to a hull, while it may seem advantageous in the short run, can really hurt you and narrow your mindset in the long run.
I might be a hull! What can I do? And more importantly, why should I care?
Remember that your barns are, in essence, your responsibility. Having people sing your praises is nice and all, but deep down, know that if they screw up, your name might get tarnished through association. Try to be both kind and fair to them, as you may have been a barn yourself, whether you were aware of it or not. And don't take on too many barns at once - they will eventually wear down your hull and you may get buried under the weight of requests and pleas for help.
I might be a barn! But my hull takes such good care of me, why should I care?
Because instead of being your own player, you've latched on to someone else and are becoming dependant. We all like help now and then to get things done, no question. But where's the sense of accomplishment if you don't really do anything yourself? This isn't a sprint to 75, it isn't a lord/serf game. We're all equal, we're all as capable as anyone else. Don't allow yourself to be dragged along the current of FFXI by a hull - break off and blaze your own trails.
