Anyone who has, or used to play Magic: The Gathering will immediately know what I'm talking about. For those that didn't, let me define it:

Barn: A player who attaches themselves to a hull, hoping to gain fame and recognition through association and proximity.

Hull: A player, normally high-level, who make themselves open to newer or lower-level players with the intent to use them.

The Barn/Hull relationship is somewhat symbiotic. The barn attaches themseleves to the hull when the hull takes care of something for them (e.g. holding their hand through Rank 5, killing the DRG job quest dragon, getting their Genkai 1 items.) The barn, seeing a juicy hull, lets everyone know that their hull is such a wonderful person, and they'll help you with anything, and Christ was reborn in their image, et cetera. Firmly planted on the hull, the barn will do most anything to defend their meal ticket. Any negative comments are immediately refuted. Any mistakes are forgiven. And they will do anything - ANYTHING - to keep their hull. In the Magic world, it was moreso a "Get me a soda" or "Can I borrow cards for this deck?" It's slightly different in XI, though. For example:

Hull: Hey, I'm leveling my (insert low level job,) and I need (insert equipment.) Can you (buy/loan) me yours?
Barn: Sure! No problem! Let me go (buy/send) that to you right away!

This, in and of itself, is not really a problem. But when you confront someone else's barn, especially in an XP situation.

Person X: You know, you really shouldn't do (tactic X.) It's hurting our XP.
Barn: Well (hull) is level (high-level) and they told me this was the way to do it, and they're higher level than you so STFU!
Person X: Is (Barn's job) their high level job?
Barn: No, they're (Hull's job.)
Person X: So what do they know about (Barn's job?)
Barn: STFU N00B (Hull) IS ALWAYS RIGHT GOD I HATE FAGS LIKE YOU GOODBYE LOSERS

Attaching yourself to a hull, while it may seem advantageous in the short run, can really hurt you and narrow your mindset in the long run.

I might be a hull! What can I do? And more importantly, why should I care?

Remember that your barns are, in essence, your responsibility. Having people sing your praises is nice and all, but deep down, know that if they screw up, your name might get tarnished through association. Try to be both kind and fair to them, as you may have been a barn yourself, whether you were aware of it or not. And don't take on too many barns at once - they will eventually wear down your hull and you may get buried under the weight of requests and pleas for help.

I might be a barn! But my hull takes such good care of me, why should I care?

Because instead of being your own player, you've latched on to someone else and are becoming dependant. We all like help now and then to get things done, no question. But where's the sense of accomplishment if you don't really do anything yourself? This isn't a sprint to 75, it isn't a lord/serf game. We're all equal, we're all as capable as anyone else. Don't allow yourself to be dragged along the current of FFXI by a hull - break off and blaze your own trails.

Cub... we had this talk before. Shut the hell up.. you'll be getting the whip tonight, now BACK TO THE FEILDS. I told you to gil farm for me if you wanted my help on smn.. I needs me a vermillion cloak.. And don't forget, it's Lord Sanjo, but I'll accept Master Sanjo too. Now where the h*** are my hoe's?

 Just playing.. I see your point, and I hate them too.

I'm embarrassed to say I've played "Magic" and still have a crapload of
cards somewhere in my house. I've never heard barn and hull terms
though. That must have been those card club things.

Ok, back to the topic. That's interesting and I've never really considered
that subject before. I do have a comment about it though. This game,
as far as I can tell, you actually need other people for help on most
subjects. It is true that some quests and missions can be solo'd though.

For example: I couldn't get any LS help for Magicite last fall. So I found
a way to solo almost the entire thing. The only thing I needed help with
was one of the NMs in Beudeaux (the one way in the back). So, you are
right. When I see people asking for "hand holding" through Magicite, I
feel their pain but I am also proud that I did most of it myself. I suppose
I could've purchased 400 x-potions and macro'd them for the Beaudeaux
fight but that is just one spot where you do need some help.

I'll admit it- I have a barn. I picked him up on his first day in game, when I started throwing some pointers at him, and answering his questions. I like to think I've been a responsible hull, though, for the most part.

I've only spent a total of 1K gil on him- that's right, 1K. We were going to party together in the Dunes, and he was short a spell, so I bought it for him. I've given him several pointers on making his own gil, and he finally seems to have found a niche he likes (playing the AH, heh). I helped him do Rank 4, but it was a messy affair and I actually vowed not to do Rank 5 with him afterwards. (He later found others to help him get Rank 5). I did help him get RSE as well, but I find that quest fun, and I farmed some chainmail pieces in the process, so that was good for both of us.

I've only given him one bit of job advice, because he plays a job that I don't. (He's PLD). Aside from that one time (a question regarding Dark Staff), I have referred him to friendly Paladins I know when he comes at me with a job-related question. Most of what I've done has been teaching him about the social structure of the game. Why it's important to have good equipment. Why it sucks to leave a party without warning, except in an emergency.

He can be irritating at times, I'll admit. Most of my linkshell only tolerates him, because he asks a LOT of questions, sometimes rapid-fire. But overall he's a good kid- and most of his failings are from the fact that he IS, in fact, a kid. I've tried my best to chastise him when he does bad, and support him when others do bad to him (which, sadly, happens a lot).

He's getting close to Genkai 1 now, and I can honestly say I'm proud of him. I don't know what he's like in party, honestly- I haven't played with him in a long time. But I know he's always excited about getting that new equipment he needs. He's always proud about how he did his job, even through the doubters and number-crunchers that love to dis the Taru Paladins. And now when I help him with something, half the time I'm joined by others who may not have known him as long, but still like him as much as I do. That's gotta say something.

There is a MUCH better term.
Here you go:

Barn is to Hull as Ho is to Pimp

I might kinda be a Barn, but I still listen to other people and think for myself. I only use the Hull for info or tips. I never try and use them to gain fame or anything that way.

Hmmm, I'm gonna have to ask Minsong which one of us is the barn now, and which one is the hull  .

I kinda think this is a circular complex going around. One person's barn is also someone's hull and whatnot. I know there are people I look up to, and other people who look up to me and so on and whatnot. It is all part of a delicate balance that makes up the social structure of FFXI.

Ah yeah, and if anyone wants to be my hull, I still need and Austeer's Staff.

I can answer that question Kat. Just send me a /tele ingame sometime.

You lose at the Internet.

I kinda got hand-held to rank 5 last week >.< And I do that my LS for thier help...

When I first went, I thought I was helping. It became apparent pretty soon I was just a liability >.O

I apologize for that, and still thank my LS for getting me there. Airships are fun!

That first that shouldn't be that. It should be 'thank' >.>

I don't know, I'm kind of like a crappy hull. I hand out advise, give out gear and items to make people's lives a little easier, and tend to drop what I'm doing when I hear someone shout for help with the dragon.

I've seen so many barns pass me that I can see what Cubs is saying though.
