Burlington, Vt. - This morning, PETA dispatched a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of ice cream icon Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace the cow's milk in their products with human breast milk. PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves. PETA points out to Cohen and Greenfield that such a move on their part would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health at the same time.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

PETA's letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield follows.

September 23, 2008

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders
Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's. Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers--and cows--would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease--America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Tracy Reiman
Executive Vice President

srsly? Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass

So, they want us to impregnate women every 9 months, which would increase the population growth and therefore our need for milk. Brilliant way to to create a vicious circle.

Milk causes cancer? Bullshit.

If anything isn't human milk after a certain age bad health wise?

Or they could do the whole nursing maid thing. A female mammal can continuously produce milk as long as the glands are being in use (suckled), without having to have a baby every 9 months.

I still wouldn't want to eat ice cream made out of human breast milk. I once heard of a study shown that because of our exposure to certain man made toxins and our processed food diets, almost 50% of all human breast milk is contaminated.

And how would one screen a woman for this? Atleast with Cows we know where they've been and all that but with Humans it's a little different.

Then why couldn't they do the same thing with cows? Yes, the pregnancies would help maintain the cow population, but at that point they're not for the continued production of milk and are a completely unrelated issue.

The "health hazards" of milk is what completely kills any credibility to me. If there was any real linkage to something hazardous, then the milk industry would have died down centuries ago. It's not like it's a business powerhouse or something.

But then this is lolPETA, the well-intended organization run by completely delusional idiots.

Then why couldn't they do the same thing with cows?

I honestly thought they did. I think most farmers do breed the cows anyways because they make a profit on the offspring. My uncles are beef/dairy farmers and I know they don't breed every one of their cows.

Anyways, I love milk. I could drink 4 litres a day if I had the chance. I'm 100% sure I don't have any milk related health hazards. I would be the first one to die if there was.

Everything causes cancer now-a-days. Anyhow, screening mothers isn't entirely difficult, though it would be more costly than screening cows. If any known conditions with the mother were known, such as an excess of calcium in the milk or prescribed to taking "hardcore" medicines that could intoxicate breast milk, that would immediately remove a whole slew of candidates from a possible donor list.

From there, doctors can simply take a mouth swab, or the "other methods" for sure, to test for subtle aliments that could potentially "taint" the milk.

Ironically, there have been clinical studies that prove a direct correlation between beast feeding and a temporary improved condition of autoimmune disease patients, such as CGD or AIDs. The reasoning isn't fully known, though assumed to be the changes in bodily chemicals and locomotion, but there is actual benefit out of this entire spiel. There is also a study that proves another correlation that breast feeding can plausibly, and considerably, beget a lower chance of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis specifically.

I mean, I would be a little grossed out knowing that I would be eating ice cream made by the milk of another women, but for all intensive purposes, it would definitely be more beneficial to our health. Though both cows and people are mammals, their milk is verily different in order to suit different evolutionary needs. The protein found in a cow's milk isn't the same found in a human's milk, and of course the latter is far more beneficial and compatible with the human body.

And as quoted by the FDA:
About 80 percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. Breast-fed babies are protected, in varying degrees, from a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight the diseases their babies are exposed to as well.

If society were to induce more breast milk every so often, in whatever dose, it'd affect our health in a beneficial matter. And mind you, next time you think about which is grosser, animals defecate all over the place, and as a result mixes in with the soil. When the cows graze, they consume the grass that inevitably absorbs the nutrients (wahoo nitrogen cycle!) that are excreted by other organisms. So indirectly, when we drink milk or eat ice cream, we are actually eating the end product of feces. Ironic, seeing as how we consider milk to be a clean product.

One could argue the same is for any vegetable we eat. Fertilizer isn't just made of dirt ya know.

Oh I know, I'm just throwing that out there for the people who think drinking breast milk is gross or vile. Every processed vegetable we eat, rather that isn't still genetically enhanced, has a lot of bacterium in them despite all the cleaning agents applied to rid of them.

Or they could use soy milk instead of human booby milk....

Seriously, cows were bred to produce phenomenal amounts of milk.

A few issues:

1) The FDA would never approve human milk for commercial sale/distribution. Even if they did, the amount of regulation and safety procedures put into it would make it prohibitively expensive.

2) You'd never find the number of women you need who are willing to meet the demands for milk that even a small-batch producer like Ben and Jerry's would have. A single cow produces gallons of milk per day, at the absolute peak of milk production a human is only outputting about 40-60 ounces of milk per day.

3) While the majority of bovine illnesses cannot be transferred to humans, it's very easy for illness to travel from human to human via bodily fluids like milk.

4) The flavor of an animal's milk is affected by that animal's diet. In humans this is beneficial, because it helps babies to acquire tastes for whatever the mother is eating on a regular basis. However, imagine what the ice cream would be like if the milk-producer had a steady diet of something like curry or heavy garlic dishes.
