If the game has any realism at all, in a sense that you can not make a creature that goes 100 miles an hour, can fly and stay under water for days, can mine without tools, doesn't need air to breathe etc, then there will be limitations as to how much "tweaking" you can do on a single species. Reality has shown that humanoids with opposable thumbs are the way to go. Spiders with claws can't operate machinery, in fact, they can't even manufacture machinery.
Anyway, I watched the whole thing, and I am actually a bit disappointed.
Great you can blow plants up, whoop-dee-doo! I realize this is an early preview, but it sure looks like they missed out on a great opportunity for cooperation instead of domination.
One of the reasons FFXI has such a strong, if small, community is that you absolutely have to play well with others in order to succeed. In Spore that potential would be limitless. You could have things in the universe that can only be done if several species mingle DNA. Like, I don't know, inter-solar power distribution systems that can only be built if all in that region or the universe work together. Some stuff like that.
There are just way too many games out there where one of the primary purposes seems to be to ruin someone elses day.
I am not entirely sure how Spore will work. Clearly there is other player's content in your universe. Whether this will be static content, as in you get it at some point and it evolves on its own on your machine while it may take a different route on the creators computer, or whether it will be some sort of online based game, remains to be seen.
Apparently, short of Toon Town, no one is able to make a multiplayer game that doesn't involve the destruction of the opponent.
